Out of One's Depth [Hunting Solo]

Haypaw sat on the edge of a hole, peering into the darkness that stretched out before her. She had heard all about the tunnels that ran beneath WindClan and...Well, her curiosity was getting the better of her. She could admit that but if she wanted to be a WindClan cat then she wanted to explore everything that made WindClan...Well, WindClan! And for some, that was venturing into the tunnels. She wasn't thrilled, she had heard terrible stories about things had happened in tunnels and she had grown so used to and in love with the open nature of the moor. But...She also wanted the thrill of the unknown...So with a deep breath, she jumped to her paws and ducked into the tunnel entrance before her.

She hadn't been ready for how quickly the light had faded as she crawled along, trying to keep her tail in line. She wanted to thump it every which way as nervous energy fluttered in her chest but she was doing her best to restrain it. It was...Dark and cramp as she took a pause to stretch out her limbs the best she could. Already she was eager to find another entrance to pop out from - she was pretty sure she could find her way back if she had to. Just...Turning around seemed like more of a challenge then she was willing to put up with.

She sighed, nose winkling at the stale air that filled the tunnel...Before she paused as she could smell...Was that a rabbit? She scrambled forward, eyes closed as she tried to pick up where the rabbit's smell was coming from. Using her whiskers, she followed the edge of the tunnel as she took turns as she drew closer and closer. Finally, her eyes managed to make out some sort of movement ahead of her. It had to be the rabbit - it smelled so close. She wasn't sure how fast she could go in the tunnels - she had been crouched the entire time but...Maybe she could still catch it. It was worth a try, at any rate. So with a deep breath, she bunched up his muscles and sprung forward down the tunnel.

Haypaw failed to catch a rabbit, costing 3 stamina.

IC: She could hear the soft footfalls of the rabbit as it sprinted away - but she was determined to catch it. Slowly she started to make out the edges of the tunnel as she realized she was heading straight toward another entrance. A moment of panic flashed through her, knowing that it was going to be far more easier for the rabbit to escape the tunnel than she would. She tried to pick up the pace as the light grew stronger... Before she watched the white pelt of the rabbit disappear into the blinding light. "No, come on!" she cried as she hurried after it, scrambling out of the tunnel.

She blinked as she adjusted to the sudden sunlight, glancing around as she pulled herself fully out of the tunnel. There was no sign of the rabbit but...Maybe she could track it. With a sigh, she opened up her mouth and tasted the air - swinging her head as she tried to pin-point which direction the rabbit had darted in. But something else caught her attention...Something familiar. She paused, fur prickling as she glanced around...Just to see a shape charge at her. She yowled in surprise, scrambling away before her paws seemed to move on her own - and she launched herself right at the back of the raccoon that had jumped at her. Her claws sank into its back as she quickly tried to perch herself out of reach of its claws or teeth. "Oh no, this is bad. This is really bad," she whimpered as the raccoon lurched beneath her.

Haypaw used Leap-and-Hold on wild Raccoon, dealing 6 damage and costing 10 stamina. The raccoon is held for 2 turns.

Zinnia was out wandering the territory, the way she often did, when she heard the cry of one of her clanmates. She darted toward the source of the sound, spotting Haypaw in the midst of battle with a raccoon. For a moment after that, she didn't think at all - just acted. "Haypaw!" she called, charging into the fray and mercilessly attacking the offending predator. "Oh, stars... Are you alright?"

Zinnia used Rending Front Paws, dealing 15 damage and costing 25 stamina.

Both Haypaw's and the raccoon's heads snapped up at the sound of rushing pawsteps and a voice. "Zinni-AH!" Relief had flooded through Haypaw...Until the warrior gave the raccoon a sharp smack. The preadtor hissed, rearing backwards as the apprentice lost her grip and went rolling to the ground. She hit the ground with an oof, glancing up to see the raccoon disappearing down the tunnel. She groaned, pushing herself up to her paws. "I'm fine, I'm fine," she said as she gave her pelt a shake...Before she sheepishly ducked her head. "Um...Thanks for the save. I was trying to explore the tunnels and chased a rabbit here and...Well, I didn't see the raccoon until it was right on top of me. But I'm fine! I didn't get a scratch on me!" she meowed, turning around to prove it...Before she paused as she noticed the smallest bit of blood on her shoulder.

"...Oh, I think I landed on a rock."

She paused to lick her shoulder, trying to figure out if the rock was still in her skin when a flicker of movement caught her attention. Rabbit. The rabbit! She was certain of it! Without a moment of hesitation, she threw herself towards the tall grass where it had taken shelter - determined to make it pay for leading her straight to a raccoon.

Haypaw continued to use Leap-and-Hold, dealing 6 damage.
Wild Raccoon is freed from pin and flees.

Haypaw attempted to catch the rabbit...Again. She failed, costing 3 stamina BUT SHE IS STILL GONNA GO FOR IT AGAIN I SWEAR TO STARCLAN.

As Haypaw disappeared into the tall grass, there was a soft growl from over near the lone warrior. The raccoon clambered quietly from the tunnel, determined to get some sort of vengeance on the she-cat that had attacked it so suddenly and severely. With a soft yowl, the raccoon launched itself at Zinnia, claws raking down its side - unaware that it had just delivered itself to the jaws of death.

The Wild Raccoon returns for...Some stupid reason. The raccoon used Quick Swipe on Zinnia, dealing 20 damage and costing 10 stamina.

Haypaw darted away, and Zinnia kept watch just in case something else unsavory should try to show its face - only for the raccoon she had just driven off to resume its assault. She withstood its attack as best she could before whirling around to face it head-on, narrowing her eyes. "We let you run, and yet you came back," she told it, sure that it didn't understand. "For that, you forfeit your life."

The blow was swift and almost merciful, entirely unlike the expression of that cat who delivered it.

Zinnia used Front Paw Strike, dealing 12 damage and costing 10 stamina.

The Raccoon is super dead.

The rabbit was slippery than Haypaw had been expecting - she was going to give it that. She had nearly pinned it a couple times but it just kept getting away, leaving her with clumps of fur. "You get back here!" she called out, a playful hint to her tone as she scrambled to race after it. Her ears were perked as she bounced through the tall grass, using the rustling to pin-point what direction it was heading. She had heard Zinnia say something but she hadn't caught the words, but it hadn't sounded like the she-cat was in danger or anything - it had been a rather calm tone of voice. Finally, she leapt forward and pinned the rabbit - her paws pinning it by its throat. Slowly the playful energy fell away as she suddenly remembered what was required of her. "...Thank you," she said, swishing her tail as she recalled the rule to thank StarClan for the prey's life - but she also felt...It was important to remember that the rabbit had its own life. It was going to be killed to be eaten - a sad cycle but...A needed one, she supposed. She raised a paw and quickly ended its life, picking it up as she scrambled back to where she had left Zinnia. "I caught it! I caught the rabbit that had gotten...Away from...Me." She drifted off as she came to a stop, staring at the dead raccoon that rested nearby. She dropped the rabbit, rushing forward to study the warrior. O-Oh, did it come back? I-I'm sorry, I got distracted and ran away, I shouldn't have but I really wanted to catch the rabbit and...Are you okay?" she questioned, eyeing the wound on the warrior's side.

Haypaw is still going for that rabbit and finally caught it. Costs 3 stamina.

"Quite alright," Zinnia assured the apprentice. Her own wounds would heal with time, as they had each time before. "I'll visit the medicine den when we return to camp. More importantly, you caught your prey and escaped the fight unharmed. That's what matters most, at least to me. I do think we ought to go back together, though, just in case there are more of them... It wouldn't do for you to be caught by yourself."

Haypaw nodded sheepishly as Zinnia assured her that she was alright, before she blinked at the mention that she had caught her prey. Oh, right! She turned, hurrying over to where she had dropped it in her rush to make sure the older warrior was alright. "Yeah! This rabbit almost got away from me but I wasn't about to let it get the best of me," she meowed, puffing out her chest before Zinnia mentioned going home together. "Oh yeah, that sounds good. I think that was enough adventure for me for today," she admitted with a soft laugh. "Come on, I'll protect your injured side!" she meowed, bouncing over to walk beside Zinnia, heart dropping a little at the sight of the wound but...It didn't look that deep, she was sure the she-cat would be fine! She was pretty amazed that she had gotten out unharmed...Well, minus that rock she had landed on. ...Was it worth having Softbreeze look at? Maybe. Any excuse to get to see her friend was a good one. "I'll make sure you get to the medicine den safe and sound," she teased lightly before she bounded off - happy with her little adventure today, mostly when everything had turned out alright in the end.
