Smokefeather stepped back to watch once more, and was silently hoping that there would be no stars-forsaken goose to interrupt this time. She'd noticed how her daughter tensed slightly at the extra direction she'd given, and sighed inwardly. How else could she help Primrosepaw?
The pale tortoiseshell watched as Primrosepaw drew closer and pounced. "Good catch." She purred. Primrosepaw would need practice, of course, but Smokefeather was proud that she'd caught the bird.
"Alright, let's see if we can bring down one more piece of prey, then I think it'll be time to head back to camp for the night. Tomorrow will be a long day as I'll be showing you around the entire territory, and I'd rather leave camp earlier in hopes of avoiding the heat." Smokefeather would also have her practice hunting, too. The evening sun was casting longer shadows, and Smokefeather hoped that Primrosepaw would have a better chance in full daylight. And given that more predators were usually nocturnal, Smokefeather thought it would be the best way to avoid running into something that might not run at the first sign of claws. Primrosepaw was a new apprentice, inexperienced. Smokefeather would have to teach her combat skills sooner rather than later, and hoped that she could instill in her apprentice more confidence when it came to hunting. The skills for one would come in useful for the other.
"There's a breeze blowing toward us from your left," Smokefeather said, "and it carries the scent of squirrel. It might be a bit harder to judge how far it is with the wind blowing strongly towards us, but it won't be able to sense you approaching unless it hears you or turns it's head." Once more she pointed in the squirrel's direction. She wanted her daughter to learn to rely on what her senses told her, given sight wasn't as reliable for her as it would be for Smokefeather. "Go for it." She instructed, hoping that her apprentice would once more be successful.

"Ok," she said nodding, "I can't wait to tour the territory!"
Primrosepaw lifted her nose slightly and opened her mouth slightly to catch the scent as much as she could. A squirrel. She was going to make up for the one she lost thanks to the goose. As she was still fairly far away, she followed the scent on light paws until she saw the fluffy-tailed animal. Dropping into a hunting crouch, she crept forwards. Closer and closer, until she leapt, like she had now done a fair few times. Her paws landed on top of the squirrel, and she quickly bit it in the back of the neck. It was a much cleaner catch than her last attempt, as her aim was almost perfect.
"I did it again! You were right - I am getting better!" She was now as happy as she had been when they first set off, dories behind her.
Primrosepaw used 3 SP to catch a squirrel. Catch was successful!

"Well done!" A purr rumbled in Smokefeather's chest as she affectionately swept her tail down her apprentice's back in approval. That had been a much cleaner catch, and Smokefeather was happy. Primrosepaw was determined, and seemed to be learning quickly. Smokefeather would do everything in her power to keep it that way. Primrosepaw had done much better than Smokefeather had done during her first time hunting.
Smokefeather's fluffy tail was raised as she led her apprentice back in the direction they'd come, pausing to dig up the sparrow Primrosepaw had caught, and then her own quail. For now, her doubts were alleviated, and she was looking forward to tomorrow.
