The forest was most dangerous at sundown, in the low moments when catkind and predatorkind briefly shared their space. Rarely did cats leave camp after the dusk patrol returned from the farthest borders, especially alone. His clanmates didn't often bat an eye at Beecloud. He was imposing enough, he supposed, for his loved ones to imagine that he would fare well enough against a raccoon or a fox. It didn't make him feel any better. But he felt obligated to hunt, after spending most of the day running camp-related errands. He hated to be too idle... curse his genetics for that antsy nature. Shadows stretched long to his right, reminding him of the limited daylight left. He had finally caught a scent trail. Meandering alongside it, careful to change course with the wind, Beecloud resolved himself to return after this squirrel. Otherwise, the outing had been fruitless, and nothing gave him more heebie jeebies than the thought that he'd encounter an owl, or a fox, or a badger. Cats had sense, cats had morals, even the lowest or rogues could be reasoned out of conflict... but a predator didn't bother.

Between his uncomfortable wheezing and thuh-bumping heart, he wondered if he'd even be able to catch the darn thing. He was much too fraught with nerves. He stopped to catch his breath, digging all of his claws into the ground under him, feeling the earth crumble between his pads, waiting for the wave to pass. So close, then he could go home. When he looked up, a pair of paws that were not his had clamped down on the squirrel. It chattered for only a moment before it was swiftly killed. Beecloud's heart sank as his ear-tips grew hot with frustration. All that work, just to have the branch fall out under him? Beecloud marched out of the underbrush, jaw set tight and eyes slightly watery as he meowed out at the rogue. "Hey!" he yelled. "Not cool! I only stopped for a minute! You have to give that back, now!"

While it wasn't really a drifter's perogative to memorize the schedules and habits of the settled cats on their travels, Summer had found that it was impossible to not be interested in the goings-on of the Clan cats of the forest. They did defend their borders sometimes, after all - though they could never be everywhere she was when she was there - and so it really behooved her to get to know a little about them. Only ShadowClan seemed particularly active in the dark hours; as the sun began to set, Summer found it rarer and rarer to find a fresh scent trail of a patrolling cat to avoid. She'd begun to learn that traveling in the evening was the surest way to cross Clan territory without risking upsetting a cat, but it necessarily excluded the more nocturnal Clan. That said, Summer chose to use ThunderClan's territory to cross the forest towards the great oak trees that she'd found in her first days in the forest. She had a few friends in ThunderClan, after all... Her heart twinged at the memory of Willowheart, forever unable to show Summer her kindness. She shook her head to brush away the memory. The point was that ThunderClan was a lovely territory.

So lovely, even, that Summer relaxed her usual respect of the Clans' code when she spotted a perfectly satisfying-looking squirrel skittering among the terrain in her path. The drifter slowed and lowered herself, eyes immediately honed in on the furry creature. It was unaware, but not for long - and when it was aware it would be the end. Summer edged forward until she knew she could clear the leap and then threw herself at the creature, swatting it to the ground and pinning it as it writhed. It chittered in fear and protest, but cats needed prey, and so the ginger-cream she-cat swiftly bent down to dispatch it. She was shocked and jolted upright, twisting around, when a booming [color=#000000]"Hey!" rang through the clearing. Summer twirled lightly on her paws to regard the cat complaining about her prey-snatching and demanding she return it. He was younger than she was, but undoubtedly a full grown cat; a very large full grown cat, actually. Her tail tip twitched, a mix of nerves and annoyance.

Summer saw the emotional frustration on his face, yet despite her best efforts, she smirked with a faintly patronizing expression at the absurdity of his request. After all, the prey hadn't all gone into hiding from the heat yet - she could hear squirrels four trees away he'd certainly be able to tackle! "Oh, come, darling; surely you can catch one yourself. It isn't too difficult. Perhaps you could use a lesson on how to properly catch squirrels from me instead?" she suggested wryly.

Beecloud's head recoiled, an indignant noise leaving his throat. He didn't want to catch another squirrel, he wanted to go back to his nest. He wanted to power through the jog home, praying that he wouldn't be the rodent in a mouth of a predator himself. He felt his tail lash like a whip, and he half considered turning around and going back empty-pawed. In fact, he grunted in frustration, circling around to find the path he had taken out of the thicket again. It was only then that it clicked in his mind. An unfamiliar cat? A trespasser! Oh, duh, you idiot!

"That prey belongs to ThunderClan!" he hissed, the noise getting caught in his windpipe. He had never instigated a fight before. He bounced on his paws just before he sped forward, colliding with the she-cat in a thud that nearly knocked the wind out of himself.

The tom didn't seem impressed by Summer's suggestion, a look of indignation on his toothy face at his lost prey and stinging remark. His tail lashed, a clear sign of his agitation, but he seemed to have begrudgingly accepted that he'd have to find something else. The hulking tom huffed and turned, slowly seeking an exit from the clearing, and Summer let her sky blue gaze slip from his striped shoulders, turning around to face the squirrel dispatched on the earth behind her. An instant later she heard the tom-cat hiss again, and she began to whirl as she pieced together that he'd changed his mind; however, the drifter was not swift enough for the barreling force of the ThunderClan warrior. Summer let out an audible "Hrrf!" as he slammed the breath out of her and body-checked her to the ground. She felt her bones shudder with the force of returned impact. Foxfeathers, he's like a wall. A furry, muscular wall. She focused on her footing and rolled seamlessly to her paws with her momentum. The she-cat shot him a glare and snapped, "Alright - alright! Fine, I'm sorry - enjoy your dumb squirrel." Then she whipped and charged away, hoping he was a reasonable cat who wouldn't chase her needlessly.

Summer fled the scene.
