Swinging From the Vines (Training)

The sun hadn't even risen over the horizon by the time Sparkfire awoke. She yawned and stretched out her limbs, nipping the loose pieces of moss from her pelt, before slipping out of the den. She breathed in the cool, crisp Newleaf air. It had rained the night before, so the undergrowth would be luscious and moist, perfect for prey. Today would be a good day. Well, so long as Vinepaw behaves unlike that pain-in-the-tail Rookpaw.

The warrior turned to the apprentices' den and squeezed her head inside, not minding her voice for the other sleeping apprentices and meowing loudly and clearly, "Get up, Vinepaw. It's time to train." She knew very well that it was a little too early for apprentices to be waking up, but she didn't really care. Her apprentice, her rules. Besides, ShadowClan cats hunted better in the darkness anyway.

"huh? ok..." It seemed as though he had been awak for a wile before, just waiting for his mentor to get up. He stretched and padded into the blinding sun-light. "So what are we going to do first? I've already go waking up early checked off my list" He meowed sarcastically, rolling his eyes.

Sparkfire glared at Vinepaw, conveying her displeasure in his sarcastic tone. "Careful, kit. I can always just send you to fetch moss for the elders' den and you won't be doing any training today." She flicked her tail for the apprentice to follow, and she led him out of the camp and into ShadowClan's territory. She led him to a small group of pine trees, and she lifted up her tail sharply in a silent command for him to stop. "Alright, first, we'll start with teaching you how to hunt. What do you know about hunting?" Sparkfire fixed Vinepaw with an intense stare as she waited for his answer.

He made the hard choice of not insulting his mentor and answering, 'That any idiot can do it.' Instead he said, "That you need to use a hunting crouch, be quiet, and make sure the wind isn't blowing on you're back..." He answered.
OOC: And by he made the hard choice, I mean I made that hard choice.

"Good." Sparkfire meowed with a subtle nod. "Alright, let's make sure you know how to 'use a hunting crouch, be quiet, and make sure the wind isn't blowing on your back' before you make a fool out of yourself." The molly settled down into a sit, pointing with her tail to a small clump of mushrooms a few tail-lengths away from them without even looking at it, having scented it minutes before. "Pretend that's a mouse. Stalk it."

(OOC: I promise I'll get around to actually teaching you the system, this is just Sparkfire's process. XD)

He crouched as he had learned when he was a kit, being quiet and lightly stepping on the ground. He stopped every once in a while as he stalked. "Is that good?"

Sparkfire's ear twitched. He was surprisingly better than she had expected. A little rough around the edges, but that was to be expected of an apprentice. She nodded in response to his question. "Now try pouncing. Use your tail for balance and straighten your back while simultaneously leaping as high as you can. Extend your claws to catch your prey."

OOC: Mushroom is not on the hunting list, so ima just get it XD.
He did just that. It was sloppy, but he landed on the mushroom cluster.

(OOC: Don't worry, mushrooms aren't on the list, this is just for practice. Also, I have sent you a PM explaining how the Hunting System works, so take a look at that before responding. :3)

"Eh, I wouldn't go bragging to your mother about that pounce, but it got the job done." Sparkfire rose up to her paws and approached her apprentice. She stopped and pointed with her nose to a nearby quivering shrub. She lowered her voice to a hiss. "Do you see that? There is a mouse in that shrub. I want you to try and catch it."

"What? Ok then..." He said quietly. He crouched, stalking toward the mouse.
He pounced, claws outstretched toward the mouse, trying to snag it. He caught it and swiftly broke it's spine with a quick bite. "Was that good?"

Sparkfire twitched her whiskers in approval. "Well done. Let us do a little more hunting to get you more used to it. I want you to also try catching a frog. If you can do that, then we will move on to teaching you how to fight."

He nodded, going to stalk one. Hunting wasn't so bad, and that was a lot coming from Vinepaw...
He pounced once again, claws outstretched.
He snagged it, biting it and killing it. "Am I a good hunter?" He asked quickly.

"You definitely have promise of becoming one," Sparkfire meowed. She was known for being strict and stoic, but she always gave credit where credit was due. How else was an apprentice supposed to grow and learn without encouragement when they've earned it? "Now then--" she began, but a sudden movement caught her eye. She turned her head to see a shrew darting out from behind a rock, clearly startled by Vinepaw's movement when he had caught the frog. She dashed out quickly, expertly slamming a heavy paw on the shrew's tail just before it could dive under the roots of a nearby pine tree. With her other paw, she scooped the rodent high into the air, letting it land with a thump against the ground. Finally, she dashed forward and nipped its throat sharply before it could recover from its stunned state.

"There we go. Now, as I was saying," Sparkfire meowed without sparing a heartbeat, kicking fallen pine needles over the fresh-kill to hide its scent from predators, "we can move on to teaching you how to fight. Battles are inevitable, whether it be against predators or rival cats. You must be prepared to defend your Clan at all costs. Are you ready to begin?"
