Better Training Days [Closed]

"Curlpaw! Its time to get up," Honeytongue purred softly as she poked her head into the apprentice den, scanning for the shape of her newest apprentice. While it had been a little bit of a surprise to get a new one so soon, she had been feeling much better in recent days and had faith that she would do well as Curlpaw's mentor. Driftingpaw was doing well and didn't need as much training so she could focus on teaching Curlpaw the basics.

Curlpaw woke up to the sound of honeytongue and padded outside after grooming her untamed tail fur. She nodded as a greeting to her mentor as she was still a little tired to talk. Her curled tail stayed close her her back/side as she padded towards the entrance. “So what are we doing?” she mewed with a yawn, looking back at the warrior.

Honeytongue had pulled herself out of the den's entrance the moment she had seen her apprentice start to stir, waiting patiently for Curlpaw to join her. She perked up at the sight of her apprentice, giving her a happy nod as she started to lead her towards the entrance and out of the camp. "Fishing! Fishing is important to the...Culture of RiverClan, so its one of the first things every apprentice should learn," she explained. "It isn't hard and yet it seems the other Clans never grasp how to grab a fish. But that makes it all the more special for us."

After that, for the most part, she led Curlpaw in silence toward the borders before a sudden hesitation fell over her. She blinked as she swallowed past the fear that started to rise, realizing that the two were drawing somewhat close to where she and Ivystar had found Torrentstar's body. They still didn't know who had killed him...Or what but the lack of scent made her doubt it was ThunderClan or another cat. It was so...Strange. She had to hope that answers would be given one day and that nobody else was in danger but... She shook her head, taking in a deep breath as she pressed forward.

Her gaze remained focused on the path ahead of them until the reached the bank of the river, motioning for Curlpaw to come to a stop as she stepped up to stare at the water. "Here we are. As I said, fishing isn't that hard to grasp - it does require patience thought. Maybe that is why the other Clans never learn," she added with an amused twitch of her whiskers. She crouched down, staring at her reflection and the faint shadows of the fish that swam beneath the surface. "You want to sit at the bank as still as you can - wait until a fish draws close and try to swipe at it and pull it from the water. The most challenging part is that the fish are rarely where they appear, being a little off. That takes a little time to learn where they really are but it still isn't hard to catch one," she noted. "Give it a try, Curlpaw! Its always the best to learn by doing."

Curlpaw nodded and sat down. She waited until she caught the sight of a fish and doing what honey said she slashed at the water a little bit away from the vision. The fish wiggled in her claw as she brought it out of the water.

"Good!" Honeytongue praised as Curlpaw managed to catch a fish, turning her own gaze toward the water. RiverClan was lucky that it was rare for them to go hungry even during Leaf-Bare but it didn't mean she should slack on her own duties. She wasn't going to leave Curlpaw to catch all the fish by herself...Besides, fishing was always something she found calming and that was something she needed in such an uncertain time as this. Her eyes focused on one of the shadows that was drawing closer, waiting for the prefect moment...Before she lashed out into the water. However, despite her best attempt she came up emptied pawed and watched with a scorn expression as the fish she had tried for swam away from the pair. "Well...You can't catch them all," she sighed shaking her head. It was a shame but things like that happened. But as long as she kept trying, then even the misses wouldn't seem to matter.

Honeytongue failed to catch a fish, costing 5 stamina.

Curlpaw looked at her mentor. “You did really good, you tried your best.” she mewed encouragement to honeytongue. Curlpaw was known to be the timid cat with the messed up tail and ears but deep down she cared for everyone and knew everyone could be great no matter what others said. She looked down at the water and sat quietly going for another fish. She waited until a fish came and she quickly slashed at the water. The fish flung out of the water and landed on the shore, flopping. She quickly killed it before it flopped back in the water than looked at her mentor smiling.

Honeytongue smiled softly at Curlpaw as her apprentice softly encouraged her. "Thank you. Its always important to remember that anybody can miss a catch, no matter how easy it should be," she noted as she glanced down at her paws. It was a shame that she had failed to catch the fish but she was more likely to catch so many more if she kept trying - this failure wouldn't mean much if she gave it her all in the next catch or two. Her eyes drifted over to her apprentice as Curlpaw got another fish, a happy purr escaping her. "Good job!" she praised before she turned to focus on fishing herself. She grew ridged as a fish drew near, waiting for the perfect moment...Before she lashed out. This time, her paws brushed scales and she drew the fish from the water with a flick of her paw. She quickly killed it, moving it to the pile that Curlpaw was starting to make. "There we go," she purred. She had to remember that it was important to keep trying - if she let her failure stop her, then where would she be left at?
