Even Warriors Need To Train Sometimes... (Closed)

Hawkstrike walked on his own through the frozen terrain, ears moving and mouth half open as he tried to find any prey. He still couldn’t forget the embarrassing fail he made during his patrol with Foxfire, and he wasn’t about to make a fool out of himself a second time, especially in front of another cat.

He had to get himself back together, put himself back on shape. And so, he returned to his habits of old. It had been so long since his last time ‘training’ on his own…but he had to do it. He hadn’t returned to SkyClan only to let them down, to become another mouth to feed, dead weight in the toughest season of them all. Oh no, he was going to make sure he was the one feeding and defending those around him, instead of needing to be the one fed and protected.

He practiced his staling with imaginary prey, placing markings on the snow as to simulate where he was supposed to jump, and even trying to use to environment around him as both helper and obstacle. Jumping on and from rocks. Using trees to give himself a boost upon making a sudden turn, placing markers under brambles to make missing an actual punishment…even attempting to climb up and down from trees when he usually avoided it, taking advantage of the soft snow.

Only when he felt himself ready for the real deal, he stopped.

With a deep breath and after shaking his long fur after a chilly breeze caught him off-guard as he tried to focus on the scents surrounding him, he headed towards the closest scent his nose could pick up. He only needed one piece of prey….only that….and he would feel satisfied with himself just enough to try and hunt with other cats again.

His ears picked up the prey’s call before his nose could, though. He looked up, looking at a pretty bird grooming itself on a lower branch. He licked his nose and, after some thought, started climbing the tree.

He knew this wasn’t an area he was skilled at, both hunting and climbing, but in the name of the Dark Forest, he was desperate.

Soon, however, he would come to regret his choice. The branch was slippery from the fallen snow, and he didn’t have much experience hunting on trees to begin with, so when he tried to pounce, he only managed to slip, failing the jump and falling off the tree. He had to be thankful of the freshly fallen snow, as even if it got stuck in his fur, it cushioned his fall, preventing him from injuring himself badly.

A lesson was learned right then and there, as he got up and looked at the bird fly away…no matter how desperate you are, hunting prey under conditions that are not only risky, but also you have no real experience on, isn’t the best idea.

He huffed, once more getting ready and sniffing the air. Either nightfall would reach him, or he would catch something. One of the two had to happen, he wasn’t willing to give up so soon.

That’s when a very particular smell reached his nose.

He turned and quickly yet silently walked towards the source of said scent, getting the wind on his favor and dropping to a crouch when he knew he was close. His gaze focusing on the fluffy creature before him.

He tried to not let his emotions ruin this one as well, focusing and keeping his head over his shoulders as he stalked the rabbit. These were his favorite yet a challenge, and if he could catch one…

His muscles reacted with the strength and expertise, only a warrior like him could have. The chase was short, and at the end of it, the lifeless body of the rabbit hung from his tightly closed jaws.

With a deep happy sigh, muffled by the rabbit he was holding, Hawkstrike turned around and started to walk back to camp.

He had trained that day, he had learned a valuable lesson, he had caught a good piece of prey and, most importantly, he had proven to himself that he was still worthy of calling himself a warrior.

Overall, a rather good day, if he was being honest with himself.
