A Warrior, a Leader, and His Son Walk Into A Forest

As much as Mistwalker loved to lead patrols, this was just weird. Oakstar, his Leadad, was the highest rank that could be. And here he was, probably the youngest of the group, leading it. Whatever Beartooth thought was best, he supposed. He turned around to face the two other cats. "I believe two or three prey per cat should be enough for the patrol." It was no dawn patrol, mid-morning if anything, but it was cool enough. He moved a little ways away from the two other cats, sniffing around for prey.

Grayleaf nodded. While Mistwalker was much younger than she was, she had respect for the warrior. He was a good cat, very selfless from what she saw. And he was willing to take the lead on things, something she couldn’t do herself. However, she couldn’t help but tease a little. “So, oh great one, which, who do you want going where?” She asked, with a smile, as she watched him sniffing around. 

She spotted a squirrel, and flicking her tail, she got down into a crouch. She was not playing anymore. When she got close enough, she leaped. The squirrel had little time to react, and it was all over in a second. She nipped the back of it’s neck as it let out a final squeal, and Grayleaf came back,the squirrel in her jaws.

The irony of the situation wasn’t lost on Oakstar, but he was proud of his silver pelted son as he took command. He chuckled at the brief order from his son, padding towards him and nudging him with a shoulder and a purr.
"Good luck, to both of you." He meowed, as they parted their separate ways and into the forest around them. His nose caught the scent of a mouse, and he followed it carefully to the bottom of a tree, then around it. His eyes spotting it in the distance as it scuffled for food.

He crept over towards it carefully. The bulk of his dark body low to the ground paws lifting carefully before he lunged out from cover. The mouse barely looked up before it was in his jaws. Neck snapped neatly as he padded over to the clearing where they were going to meet back up to bury it for retrieval.

Mistwalker quietly scoffed at the comment, but he had to admit it was quite funny. Whatever. He needed to catch prey. He scented a mouse, but pounced too fast. Hm. He needed to do better than that.

Grayleaf buried her prey, then looked around. The others had already left, leaving her. She was not satisfied with being the one cat to bring back prey, so she traveled further along. A thrush was spotted a little ways away, and she once again crouched so that she could sneak up on it. Further she crept, until she was a mere tail length away. Then she sprang.

There was a flurry of feathers, and the thrush had escaped her grasp. It pecked her head a few times, before flying to a nearby tree. It stared at her, seeming to mock her as it did so. "You dirty, mange-feathered bird!" She spat at it, then went sulking to find some more prey. She was not going to be the one with the least amount of prey on this patrol, not when the leader was present.

Grayleaf attempted to catch a bird, but failed, costing 3 SP.

Oakstar padded back into the forest. Amber eyes gleaming in the flickering lights between sun and shadow as he scented something on the ground. A soft scent that lead to a feather resting in the sun. He lifted his head, catching sight of a large sparrow that was pecking at the forest floor. He stalked forward slowly. His paws hitting a branch as he was getting into position for the pounce. He lifted his head and sighed, scenting at the ground, then the air.

Embarrassed by his previous failure, though no one was there to see him, Mistwalker went after another mouse, catching it with ease. His skill was not wavering, it had to be simply bad luck.
