Gray Morning (Closed)

As snow drifted to the earth in light flakes, covering the frostbitten ground, a lithe gray she-cat and her apprentice trotted out across the territories. The wind carried its chill all across the open moors, but the constant movement kept them warm enough to stay awake, despite the early morning. Graybriar glanced behind her occasionally to make sure the she-cat was following, but kept up a brisk pace anyways. Honestly, she was glad to be a mentor. It gave her a reason to get up every morning. And the work of training two apprentices was no joke- but today it was just her and Frozenpaw.

When they reached a suitable spot, the warrior finally halted, sky-blue eyes scanning over the territory before turning back to the younger she-cat. "All right," she said, "are you ready to use the skills I taught you and find some rabbits?"

Frozenpaw bounced behind her mentor like a kit, excited to have some one-on-one training and practice.  She had grown recently and was not nearly as small as she'd been at her apprentice ceremony, her legs becoming long and slender and tail growing even longer. Unlike some unfortunate souls, she had grown slowly and steadily and thus retained her grace. "Yes, Graybriar, perfectly ready!" She meowed in confirmation, quite pleased with the freedom of the moors.

Graybriar smiled at the she-cat's enthusiasm. "All right, then, let's go! I'll race you there!" Without further warning, the lithe gray tabby began dashing across the moors, her long and experienced legs making it look like she was flying. Despite her SkyClan heritage, it was evident that she was born to run. The wind in her fur created a feeling of bliss that she couldn't reach any other way. However, remembering what she was supposed to do, she glanced back to see if Frozenpaw was following.

A wide smile crossed her face at the challenge, and Frozenpaw followed with eager anticipation. The ground was cold and hard, but she knew nothing else besides the ice and snow of leafbare. Her strides were long, steps light, and breaths deep as she shot across the territory with her mentor, feeling nothing but joy and sheer excitement. Although the wind was cold and whipped against her short fur, the warmth from running kept her comfortable. Truly, it felt like nothing could stand in her path, except for her mentor who managed to stay a few pawsteps ahead.

Graybriar was proud of how close her apprentice managed to keep up, and enjoyed the thrill of running across the territory. She wasn't tired yet, but when she reached the place she'd been sprinting towards, she stopped, feeling her heart still racing from the speedy pace she'd set. They were on the tallest hill in WindClan territory, overlooking a series of smaller hills and dips and valleys where prey could be easily spotted. "All right," she told Frozenpaw, "show me what you've learned."

Frozenpaw attempted to halt beside her mentor, but the sudden stop and the icy ground led to her sliding a little bit of the way down the hill they'd stopped on. Laughing as she slid, the apprentice used her claws to grip the frozen ground and stop herself from going any further. She climbed back up the hill with a smile on her muzzle, her bubbly spirit maintaining itself where another apprentice might have been embarrassed. "Yes, Graybriar!" She responded cheerily, looking across the moor for a sign of movement. Unfortunately, the movement she'd spotted and proceeded to chase after was not a rabbit, but a very angry raccoon that did not appreciate her sudden attack. She gripped its tail in her teeth and halted in place, apparently unaware that a raccoon was not typical WindClan prey.

Frozenpaw used Tail Yank on the raccoon, dealing 2 damage and using 10 stamina. It's stunned for one turn.

Graybriar watched her apprentice closely, prepared to watch her hunting techniques and offer critiques if necessary, but instead gasped as a raccoon appeared out of nowhere. She knew it was leaf-bare, and predators must be getting desperate... But why did they always interrupt when she tried to hunt with her apprentices?! The gray tabby ran to assist Frozenpaw, wary of the animal's sharp teeth and remembering when one had sunk its fangs into her leg. She stood on her hind legs and clawed at it, then quickly got between it and her apprentice.

Graybriar used Upright Front Paws, dealing 15 damage and costing 20 stamina.

Graybriar's intervention made Frozenpaw realize that she'd made a mistake; a serious one, too. The raccoon hissed and snarled in anger. Hopefully this wasn't the one from their last encounter... Frozenpaw gasped as it lunged toward her mentor, who had protectively placed herself between her and the furious raccoon. It used its claws to rip at Graybriar's side, and now angered herself, Frozenpaw jumped past her mentor to get her own hits in. She dug her claws into the raccoon's belly in an uncharacteristic fit of rage.

The raccoon used Quick Swipe on Graybriar, dealing 20 damage and using 10 stamina.

Frozenpaw used Belly Rake on the raccoon, dealing 7 damage and using 10 stamina.

Graybriar gritted her teeth against the pain as the raccoon slashed her side, trying not to hiss in reaction. At leafy it got her and not Frozenpaw. Speaking of her apprentice, she had weakened the raccoon further- hopefully now she could drive it off for good. She raced up and brought her paw down heavily on its head, panting as the furry predator collapsed beneath her.

Graybriar used Front Paw Blow, dealing 11 damage and costing 5 stamina.

Panting in a mixture of adrenaline and exhaustion, Frozenpaw watched as Graybriar finished off the raccoon with a smart knock to the head. It fell, dazed, and then got up and scuttled away as fast as it could manage in its dizzy and injured state. The apprentice turned to her mentor with a wide smile, her tail gently flicking from side to side. "Wow, Graybriar! You're my hero!" She purred, moving closer to butt her head affectionately against the older she-cat's shoulder and blissfully ignorant of the fact that her own actions put them both in danger. "You're such a great warrior. You always save me! I'll make sure mother knows how valuable you are to this clan! But I'll be shocked if she doesn't already. Any cat could tell how strong you are just by looking at you." She meowed, still taken by her mentor's bravery.
