Swift Hunting (closed)

Sitting near the camp entrance, Ryecloud waited for some cat to join him and a cool early morning breeze ruffled his grey pelt as he sat in silence. Once again, the disfigured tom had been suddenly woken up from a pain shooting up his left hind leg and while he knew that he had to go see Dewpool about it one of these days, he decided not to, seeing that he probably wouldn't have been able to explain it well enough. So here he was, the isolated, awkward tom who woke up before sunrise way too often.

Hearing approaching pawsteps, Ryecloud turned to see Barelytuft, one of WindClan's newer warriors, if he remembered right. Stiffening up from his usually spell of social anxiety, the crippled tom looked down to his paws. Great StarClan, his clanmate had said something, why did he have to be such a cowardly mousebrain?

"Morbing," the crooked jawed warrior mumbled, giving a nod and keeping his gaze to the ground. Well, at least he wasn't alone anymore, but whether it was for better or for worse, he couldn't tell.

Listening to Barelytuft, Ryecloud didn't lift his head, nor did he respond to the tom's comments about prey, but upon speaking of the hunting, the cripple looked over to the freshkill pile. It did look a bit... bare, and while he wasn't particularly fond of hunting, seeing as though he rarely ever caught anything, he knew it'd look bad if he denied the offer. "Dure," he mewed softly in reply, though he knew that he'd regret agreeing to hunting later on. Taking a moment to awkwardly stand up, the warrior limped out of the camp entrance and into the open moorlands.

Following Barelytuft out of the camp and into the moorlands, all of Ryecloud's senses stood on end. He'd seen the horrible things that happen out of the safety of the camp and he personally disliked being out in the open, seeing as though there were so dangers to encounter. To any other warrior, they'd be able to defend themselves, but no, not him. He wasn't that lucky. If he were to run into another cat or even a predator, he'd be a goner, so the older tom always found himself overly cautious when patrolling or hunting.

Watching as his company went off to catch something, Ryecloud opened his already opened jaw even farther as he continued to hobble along. Catching a whiff of prey, he crouched down as far as his three legs would allow him and stalked forward. Catching sight of a rabbit munching some brush just a foxlength ahead through the tall grass. Holding his position, but stalking forward a step ever few moments, until he decided he was closes enough.

Waiting just a few more moments, Ryecloud used all of his might to push off from his hind-leg. Landing squarely on the rabbit and digging his claws into its pelt, his success somewhat surprised the tom, but he pushed the thoughts away and killed the prey with a swift bite before it even had time to squeal.

Slowly standing up, the cripple made him way back to where he left Barelytuft, a rabbit in tow. Well, so far so good.

IC: Dropping his prey by Barelytuft's, Ryecloud made his way back into the tall grass and was lucky enough to spot a mouse right off the bat. Creeping forward once more, Ryecloud stopped and waited. Lowing his hackles, he lunged forward, but unlike last time, the mouse had heard him and was faster than he'd initially imagined. Scurrying off, the mouse left his sight and Ryecloud fell to the ground. Letting out a huff, he stood up and gave his pelt a shake. Maybe next time.

ooc: I understand - I'd love to not get in an encounter. xD

Barleytuft picked up his kill and returned to Ryecloud, noticing that the warrior seemed a little ruffled. The younger warrior immediately recognized the look of a failed hunt - which he himself had experienced many times as an apprentice - and said nothing, simply dropping his rabbit. He mewed, playfully admonishing himself, "Did you hear my rabbit scream? That was an apprentice mistake, huh?" He didn't feel too disheartened, but he was certain that all the other prey had fled the area after hearing the cry.

The sandy tom looked at their pile of three rabbits; someone would have to carry two and have a sore jaw for a couple days. With that in mind, Barleytuft mewed, "Why don't we call it a trip? I bet the dawn patrol is on its way back home by now, and we could beat them back."

Embarrassed by his mistake when hunting, Ryecloud's ears perked when Barelytuft began to speak again. Shaking his head, he hadn't actually heard any rabbit scream, which he assumed had happened when he was failing at his hunt. Turning back to the younger warrior, the cripple gave a nod, personally glad that they were calling it quits so early. Leaning down, he grabbed his rabbit and began limping back towards camp, knowing that Barelytuft would easily catch up.

Barleytuft didn't mind Ryecloud's quietness; after all, once Barleytuft picked up the second rabbit he wouldn't be able to respond, anyways. The sandy warrior laid the rabbit he was holding on top of the second on the ground, then gingerly picked the two of them up by their scruffs together. He strained to keep his head up high enough to not bump them ragged on the ground as he plodded after his Clanmate. Barleytuft felt pleased by their success, and satisfied that he had been able to show his talent to an experienced warrior such as Ryecloud.
