The Eternal Hunt [SOLO/CLOSED]

The day was slowly coming to an end upon the moors. The rolling hills were painted a brilliant rose color as the sun came to rest behind the Highstones in the distance. Many of the moor cats had already wrapped up their day and were lying about camp, eating prey, and curling up for sleep. A soft lull seemed to smother everything with sleepiness as darkness began to come.

But not for Twistedtail. The old warrior’s ears and eyes were alert and trained on the hills. She sat at the entrance of camp looking out. From there she could see all across the steppe, all the way to Fourtrees in the distance. She had learned through moons upon moons of running the moor that rabbits tended to come out most during evening and it seemed silly to waste a perfectly good opportunity for hunting.

“Goin’ h-hunting?” Twistedtail swiveled around to look at the speaker. A small, scraggly gray tom with semi-folded ears stood before her, bright yellow eyes keen with interest. Scars riddled his pelt and accumulated around a broken, partially snapped jaw. Pigeonpaw. The former rogue had noticed her pondering and was curious. “Hello Pigeonpaw,” she greeted, “I was actually just thinking about catching some rabbits before the day ended. Care to join?” Pigeonpaw purred softly. “Why not?” He said. He had always loved hunting. Even back in the Barn when he was being raised by Bat and Pepper, he loved to go out and catch mice in the hay. 

So the duo headed out of camp on their small hunting trip. Both of them had all their attention to their surroundings in wait of a hare to show themselves. After some walking, Pigeonpaw caught a scent. “There’s a hare over there,” he whispered to Twistedtail, who nodded in reply. He immediately slunk down into a crouch and slowly got closer. When he felt that the time was right her launched himself forwards in full chase.

Pigeonpaw was just about to catch it. Just. The frightened rabbit was too slow for the Windclan tom and he was catching up rapidly. And then, just at the last second, he tripped over a pebble.

Twistedtail watched with an amused purr as the gray tom comically on his face, hind legs in the air. “Are you okay?” she purred, “you had quite the landing there.” “I’m fine,” he replied as he heaved himself up. In reality he was quite sore and more than a little upset that he failed over a rock, but he wasn’t going to show that. “Here, let me show you how it works.” Twistedtail weaved herself around and sniffed in the air for the smell of rabbit. A hare was not too far away, hidden in the heather. She flicked her crooked tail a little to let Pigeonpaw know she found one. Almost immediately after, she coiled up her haunches and launched herself forwards towards her prey.

The brown hare was blissfully unaware of the impending predator coming over the rise. When it finally looked back and saw the large Siamese coming for it, it was already too late. It turned tail and ran but Twistedtail still caught up to it. With one expert leap, she ringed her claws around its neck and cleanly snapped it. 

Pigeonpaw was sitting where he was when Twistedtail started the chase, licking his ruffled fur down. He looked up and saw Twistedtail coming by, dragging a large hare behind her. “That is a g-good cutch,” he stammered with his broken jaw, “B-but I still thunk I can do bettur.” “Are you sure?” Twistedtail challenged. “Yep,” was her only reply.


Fast as he can, the scarred gray cat sped off over the hill. He had already scented a rabbit while waiting for Twistedtail, and just as he thought it was still in the same spot. It was a large, fat rabbit, fatter than even Twistedtail’s hare, and she’ll know which one of them was a better hunter when he brought it back.

Twistedtail was quite surprised when Pigeonpaw came back proudly with a hare in his jaws. It was larger than hers and would certainly feed a lot more cats. “Ah, I guess you win,” she sighed, though with a smile on her face. She took a look up at the sky. The sun had set faster than she expected and twilight was upon them. “Come on. Let’s get this back to camp before it is too dark to see.” Pigeonpaw nodded from behind his large catch. Twistedtail grabbed her hare from earlier and together they brought their prey back to the camp.
