Mud is Essential

There was a blur leaving the apprentices' den. The day was new and Asterpaw was ready for her hunt with Curlyfeather and some other cats. The young she-cat thought her training was progressing a little slower than a normal apprentice, but she was fine with that. In the beginning of her training, it started out slow and that might be the reason she was a little behind. She sat at the camp entrance with her tail wrapped around her paws waiting for Curlyfeather and the others to meet her.

"Hello," Curlyfeather greeted as she padded up to Asterpaw, waving her tail slightly out of habit. Cedarfur, Scorchfang, and a few others were probably the only ones who knew what it meant, but she didn't care. Now she was starting to get worried about her apprentice. It was way past time for her to have become a warrior, and she knew that it was probably her fault. Their training had started while she was still getting used to hunting without sound, or as much control over her legs. Just another problem caused by her failure to become better. If anyone else asked her, she would have blamed it on the ThunderClan warrior who attacked her. But inside, she completely blamed herself. Sitting down, she waited for the other members of the patrol to arrive. Scorchfang was coming, she remembered that, because she had been surprised that the deputy wanted her to lead a patrol that he was in. The other cat, she had forgotten about, or more likely never bothered to learn who it was. Communicating names was something that used way too much effort to be worth her time.

Scorchfang smiled, offering a polite nod to Curlyfeather and Asterpaw as he approached.

Crowfur walked up to the group with a friendly smile. "I'll come along." he purred with a nod. He turned his gaze to Curlyfeather and then walked up to her. He bumped his shoulder to hers as friendly affection and then grinned to Scorchfang.

Asterpaw nodded once it seemed like the patrol had showed up. "Ready?" She looked at her mentor, the deputy, and Crowfur.

ooc: sorry this is short, I didn't want Asterpaw to "take charge" of the patrol seeing as she is only an apprentice and it is not in her nature.

"I think we're all ready to go. So let's get moving," Curlyfeather ordered, not the least bit concerned about how Scorchfang or Crowfur would feel about being bossed around by her. Asterpaw wouldn't care, she was her apprentice and probably used to it. That was mostly the reason she wasn't scared to take control. Her apprentice's training, her right to lead. Even with the deputy being present. Stepping out of camp, she began heading towards a good place to hunt that she knew of. Most of the time, she only went hear by herself or with one trusted cat, but she was pretty close with all of the patrol members, so it would be fine. Scenting a mouse, she followed its trail, discovering the small brown rodent to be hiding under a small bush. Though it did seem pretty alert, it seemed to be focusing at something in a tree in the opposite direction. Perfect. Crouching down, the deaf she-cat stalked towards it, taking every measure to distribute her weight evenly among her four legs. Once she was close enough she pounced. Yet the creature noticed her. before she could bring her paw down upon it, it bolted away, leaving no trace that it had been there. Cursing silently, she rejoined her patrol.

Scorchfang followed after the deaf warrior with no complaints. He wanted to continue helping Curlyfeather be just as important and capable a warrior as any other ShadowClan cat. When the she-cat broke away from the patrol to begin stalking a mouse, he watched hopefully, only to see her unfortunately miss her catch.

He learned his lesson from last time when he tried to demonstrate a way she could adapt to hunting without her hearing, and it wasn't until after the patrol that he figured she would have taken that as a sign of pity rather than anything else, something no disabled cat wanted or needed. Instead, he gave her a smile and a lift of his tail, mouthing the words to her, "You can do it." He hoped he sounded supportive enough to help her keep going with confidence, but not obsessive over cheering her back up.

His ear flicked at the sound of the scuttling of tiny paws along the needle-covered ground, and he spotted the rare squirrel scouring for pine cones that still contained nuts inside. He figured it must have crossed over the Thunderpath from ThunderClan territory. He crouched down and stalked towards it as slowly and as carefully as possible, and when he was close enough he pounced. Unfortunately for him, the squirrel seemed to hear his large paws rustling up the pine needles underpaw in his pounce, and it dashed away to the nearest tree.

Scorchfang gave immediate chase, hoping to catch up to it before it could flee, but he was not at all prepared for it to suddenly leap upward. He yelped and skidded his paws clumsily against the ground to stop himself, but the slippery needles didn't provide enough friction to keep him from slamming hard into the dark brown trunk headfirst. Dizzily, he stumbled and groaned before falling over on his side. "Owww..."
