Warm Hunting

Shadefang waited by the camp entrance for his other two patrol partners. He hadn’t been a warrior for long, but it seemed he was already trusted enough to lead a hunting patrol of his own. And the best part was that he would now get to boss around Spotfur. While he was the mate of Smokewish, the cat who had saved him from drowning as a kit, as well as his father’s brother, he was also friends with that awful excuse for a mother he had. It would be very satisfying to get to tell him what to do, as well as the apprentice who was to come along with them. It would definitely give him practice for when he had an apprentice of his very own.

IC: Spotfur walked up to Shadefang. "Now all we need is Tawnypaw and we've got a good, full patrol." He stood by the younger warrior. "Remember, if we see an enemy cat, talk first, attack later. They just might be able to help Riverclan. Not all cats will be like that rogue that one time."

ic: Tawnypaw sauntered out of the medicine den with her head held up high, confidence radiating off her as if she were the sun itself. She stood next to her adoptive father, Spotfur, and nodded respectfully towards Shadefang.

(OOC: That’s okay, it’s my own fault for not letting you two know ^^;)

Shadefang glared at Spotfur as he instructed him not to attack enemy cats. ”In case you haven’t noticed, Spotfur, we are warriors, not kittypets. If I see another cat in RiverClan territory, I will attack. That is the warrior code, isn’t it, to challenge trespassers? Honestly, you’ve been spending far too much time with Sweetheart.” He violently spat the name of his mother, his tail giving an angry lash behind him.

Once Tawnypaw padded up to them, he grunted at her. ”You’re late. We were supposed to have headed out long before now. Don’t let this tardiness happen again, I’m sure your mentor wouldn’t appreciate having to wait around forever.”

Without another word, he rather bossily flicked his tail for the other two cats to follow, padding deeper into RiverClan territory. He signaled them to stop once they reached his favorite hunting spot: a marshy, muddy piece of land next to the flowing river. ”Hunt whatever you two seem fit, but we won’t leave until every cat has caught at least two pieces of fresh-kill. Newleaf may be here, but that doesn’t mean the Clan should go hungry.”

Spotfur gave Shadefang a sarcastic glare. "And if they're here to help, then we've just passed up a valuable ally, and rather, we'd have made a dangerous enemy. You've got to think, Shadefang." As Shadefang gave his daughter a scolding, he gave Tawnypaw a knowing and sympathizing look before narrowing his eyes at his nephew. "Don't make me remind you that I'm the older warrior here, and you were just an apprentice not too long ago. Other cats have lives outside of patrols. This isn't the first time an apprentice has been late, nor will it be the last." Then they stopped... by the marsh? Not his hunting spot of choice. He walked over to the river, catching a fish with speed and grace.

Tawnypaw quietly padded after the two toms, deciding it would be best for her to say nothing. Silence was something she was used to, anyway. As the patrol came to stop, she found herself separating to go off and hunt something on her own. Carefully, she lifted her muzzle and tasted the air, scenting prey nearby.

She dropped into a hunter's crouch when she could hear the croaking of a frog lounging nearby. Carefully, she slunk towards it, her tail high and erect in the air to avoid brushing against the ground and causing the potential prey to run away. Deeming herself close enough, she leaped, claws unsheathed as she came down quickly on the creature. With a quick nip to the neck, Tawnypaw killed the frog. Pridefully, she buried the prey for later.

Shadefang watched as his two Clanmates successfully caught their first pieces of fresh-kill and nodded in satisfaction. Then he headed to the marshier part of the riverbank and stopped when he spotted a frog. He licked his lips hungrily and dropped down into a hunter's crouch, then stalked forward, his pawsteps muffled by the mud and his weight evenly distributed by the subtle rise and fall of his body each time he stepped down. He pounced, but he had misjudged the distance and ended up flying over the frog and straight into the river. Startled, the frog fled as Shadefang gasped for breath and paddled back to the shore. With a furious hiss, he shook out his fur, which was burning hot with embarrassment despite the wet cool-down. Hopefully Spotfur and Tawnypaw would be smart and not say a word about his blunder.

Spotfur watched Shadefang out of the corner of his eye and couldn't help but laugh at the arrogant tom plunging into the river. He tried to hold it back, but he did snicker a tiny bit. Serves him right. He thought. He went over by where Shadefang's miss was, locating the frog that the other tom had missed. He leaped and caught the frog. With the frog in his jaws, he walked past Shadefang with a prideful look. Then, Spotfur uncovered the fish. "That's two." He noted. "Should I catch two more for you so that we can go home?" He knew he was treading on thin ice, but it was kind of funny when Shadefang got angry and embarrassed. Mr. Oh-High-And-Mighty would get red in the face and try to insult him, but Spotfur was so much better at it. That would show Shadefang to act so bossy.
