Goldeneye was going to burst at the seams if she was around Jaystreams kits for much longer, they kept ruining the organization of her herbs, running into and out of camp and tripping her feet. They distracted her and screamed while sobbing like little brats and threw temper tantrums, they bugged her patients and overall made what she thought was a tough job even worse. She didn't know how much she could take, so, while the kittens were asleep she snuck out, the last of the dawn patrol shuffling into their nests.

The she-cats eyes rested upon Jaystream, who looked just as exhausted as she felt. Padding towards him, she looked up at the tom and searched his sea-green eyes. She knew how much pain he was in, still affected by his mate's death during the kitting moons ago. "Jaystream... let's go for a walk. I think we both need it." The medicine cat requested gently, fighting the urge to press her head into his head and neck.

Goldeneye couldn't really feel her paws as she padded towards the camp entrance, turning to look back at Jaystream, hoping to see him following. He really needed a break, he was in so much pain and a single parent of a whole new litter despite all of the help she was giving him.

The large tom took a deep breath when he sat down to relax and organize his thoughts for a second. Being a father of ten kits was far harder than he expected and it was worse considering that he didn't have a mate by his side to help him. The memory of Cinderpaw was still a wound in his heart and the worried tom continued asking himself if what he was doing was the right thing: leaving the kits in the medicine cat den to stay safe, keep them under the eye of Goldeneye or Tinytip and telling them to stay there. He knew that they were starting to dislike being inside of that den but... he didn't want them to get hurt being so young. He wouldn't be able to bear the death of one of his beloved kits...

His tufted ears perked and he turned his sight toward the golden-furred she-cat coming to him. She looked tired as well and it was no wonder why. She gently accepted to act as a replacement for a queen even though she had other duties to do. She had been taking care of the kits while he was in patrols only because he was one of her friends. A soft, exhausted smile appeared on his muzzle. It was blessing from Starclan to have her there, by his side. "I guess... we can leave Tinytip with the kits for a while." He answered before thinking about for a few seconds. His mind was so overworked that he didn't have the time of the ability to worry. The deputy just needed a break as well as Goldeneye.

He followed her to the entrance, where he touched her tail friendly with his own fluffy tail like he was telling her that he was ready to go for that walk.

"Mhmm." Goldeneye didn't say anything, curling her tail around his briefly before releasing it and dipping past the camp entrance, into the water and out once more, taking a moment to shake out the water from her pelt. Long, golden fur stuck out in all sorts of angles, making her look like a golden ball of sheep-fluff. Goldeneye took a quick moment to lick down her fur, though plenty of her fur still stuck out. Today, she was taking her friend to sunningrocks, nothing some warm rocks and some sunning wouldn't fix any stressors.

Goldeneye wanted to broach the subject of Jaystreams feelings, though she was unsure of how to go about it. She needed to help him heal his physical and mental wounds, she was his medicine cat, with a duty to uphold. She let the handsome blue tom catch up to her as she let out a large yawn, her eyes tearing up as she did so. Goldeneye slowly let herself stretch out, all sorts of cracks coming from her, she had been practically cooped up in her den, so this walk was a welcome relief.

The tom followed Goldeneye silently and he lazily entered the water not minding the cold at all. He walked out and shook his body. Thanks to his medium-length fur, he didn't have any problems with drying himself. However, his tail was another story. Just like Goldeneye's fur, it looked like a fluffy and messy cloud but he was so physically and mentally tired that he didn't make any effort to brush it.

Jaystream soon reached the side of the beautiful golden she-cat and he walked with her to their destination: the Sunningrocks. He had mixed feelings about this place. Every time he was there, he remembered the bloody fight in which he had to participate to protect Riverclan's lands. But it also brought him the memory when he taught Cinderpaw how to swim and how they used to do races here. The tom's expression looked a bit sadder when he thought about his dead mate and first love but he tried to cheer up for Goldeneye. He didn't want to worry her with more of his troubles after how hard she was working to take care of HIS kits.

Not able to hold on for any longer, his body fell over a plain and large, warm rock. Until now, he didn't notice how tired he actually was. With a purr, he stretched his whole body and then the tom put himself in a comfortable pose. He looked at the she-cat with sleepy but friendly eyes. "Come. You look even more exhausted than I. We both need rest..." The situation was similar to the one he had with Cinderpaw moons ago in that exact place but somehow... it was also different. He felt older and more mature... Jaystream looked so different from when he was Jaypaw but at the same time, he was also the same cat. It was weird and nostalgic for him to think about the past, especially after Cinderpaw's death which still brought him pain and sorrow.

Goldeneye was alarmed when Jaystream fell and didn't get up, but as he turned to her and beckoned her over, who was she to resist? She had the willpower to stay on her paws until she was next to the handsome deputy. Goldeneye eased herself onto the warm stones, her fur fluffing out as she nudged herself against Jaystream. Her paws sprawled out as she practically tried to incase the tom, her muzzle pressing into his neck fur and her tail wrapping around his back. She should have put some distance between them, but for all she cared he was warm, the rocks were warm, and that perhaps closeness is what he needed.

The deputy was glad to see his friend approaching to settle down to rest but he didn't expect her to get so close to him. When the golden-furred she-cat laid down next to him, he looked at her confused but she didn't give him the chance to say anything before her muzzle was nuzzling his neck, warmly.

This sensation...

Feeling Goldeneye this way, embracing him in such a loving way made him remind his days with his dead mate. Tears he didn't ask for started to fill his green eyes as the guilt and sadness consumed him. A quiet sobbing came out of his mouth as he hid his face on the medicine she-cat's back neck fur, curling his fluffy around her as he tried to cling to someone to not fall even deeper in the darkness and coldness that was in his heart since that horrible night.

With his tufted ears flattened against his skull and trying to avoid the she-cat's gaze, the tom cried softly and tired. Being so busy with his kits and his duties as deputy didn't give him a moment to just mourn and let out everything that was inside his broken soul. He hated being so weak in front of others but the tom wasn't able to hold on any longer. Jaystream loved Cinderpaw since they were apprentices... she was always there for him but now she was gone... and a part of him insisted that it was his fault. "I-I-I'm s-so sorry..." He whispered, wrapping his tail around her body, tighter.

Goldeneye let the tom wrap himself around her, to nuzzle into her neck fur and let himself go, sobbing into her fur and just letting his feelings out. It wasn't what she expected to happen if she was being honest, but when the older tom tried to squeeze out a stuttery apology, she couldn't be disappointed. Here was her best friend who had lost his mate, who had responsibilities to stay strong for his clan-mates, no time to himself to just... breathe.

So she let him do what he needed, he needed her and so she had to be there for him. No matter what. "Shhh... shh... it's alright Jaystream. You lost your mate so it's only realistic for you to grieve. I'm right here and I always will be here for you for when you need me. You have ten kits who love you, Ivystar loves you. I love you. " Goldeneye hummed, her voice soft and soothing which was a rarity to hear. Then she had an after-thought, and before Jaystream could respond to her 'I love you' she hurriedly sputtered, "As a friend, I love you as a very close best friend... You're my only friend." She huffed, stopping before she could dig her grave and love confession deeper.

But did she really love him? She just said it without thinking, the words spilling out with ease... she needed time to think.

The soft voice of the she-cat calmed his wounded heart and he dipped his head even more in her long, feathery golden fur. With his tail wrapped around her and her laying so close, the tom felt warm and safe. He wasn't alone because Goldeneye was with her. She had always been, despite his flaws and weakness. The medicine cat was capable of hearing him and understood what he was going through without saying it with proper words. "I wish... I could have done s-something e-else for her." He muttered when she told him it was okay to grieve after his mate's death.

Then, the medicine cat started telling him that he wasn't alone and she was right. He had his kits. He wasn't sure if Ivystar truly saw him as a son or as her deputy but... he had Goldeneye. That was more he could ask for.

And then... she said those words... the ones he hadn't heard since Cinderpaw's death. At first, he froze in shock, not sure of what she meant with those words. She couldn't be possibly be suggesting that she... loved him as more than a friend, right? She was a medicine cat and he was the deputy. They simply couldn't. But, even if he knew all that... why did his heartbeat rose? Even if she explained herself, he could still feel that beating inside his chest. He wouldn't be...? No, it was probably the surprise, he said to himself.

He separated his head from her neck, his eyes not dropping another tear anymore. Instead, he pressed her tighter to him and smiled as he usually did, letting know her that he was better now. "I'm sure that's not true, Goldeneye... you're a good cat and an amazing friend in every way. I'm sure that more than one cat must like you and think of you as a friend. At least... I think my kits would see you as more than a medicine cat after all you've done for them. And after all you've done for me... I can say that you're my closest friend in the clan too..." He mewed sheepishly and blushing slightly.

"There was nothing anyone could do... don't blame yourself." Goldeneye mewed. When Jaystream pulled away she almost panicked, the lack of everything that was Jaystream but when he started to speak she let herself relax a bit. Goldeneye was disappointed when he did not speak of loving her in turn but she supposed the wounds that Cinderpaw had left was all too fresh. She could wait. "Thank you, Jaystream. That means a lot for me to hear that." Goldeneye smiled softly though her guilt and a splash of self-deprecating habit made the she-cat shrink away mentally. "Though this is about you, not me." She meowed gently.

Jaystream was having a horrible time coping, he didn't need her problems not now or ever for that matter. She was the medicine cat, she was to treat, not to be treated. She gave advice, she didn't receive it. She helped, she did not get help. She was just a tool. Jaystream was important, his health mentally and physically was important. She was alone, isolated by her duty. When was the last time any of her clan-mates came in for a chat? When did they great her and ask her how she was doing without her prompting them? Goldeneye hissed at herself, she was just being selfish. That's it. Selfish.

Goldeneye looked at how they were positioned, her head against his neck and locked in an embrace. She was taking his attention when he could find another she-cat, how could she be so greedy? Yet, she couldn't bring herself to pull away. Every insecurity that now surfaced aimed to rip her apart from the inside, and it was working. "Thanks. Is there anything else you need me to help you with?" She asked, softening her voice as she nearly flinched at how hard her voice seemed to her. She was there to help him after-all, not herself.

The warrior lowered his tufted ears and looked at her with big, slightly concerned eyes. He looked away a bit. "I'm not more important than you are, Goldeneye. You've helped me every time I needed you and as your friend, I would like to do the same for you when you need my help or anything from me."

The warrior nuzzled her neck gently, and let her head fell on her back, as he embraced the rest of her body with a long a feathery tail. He purred softly and let her feel his own warmth. Goldeneye was stronger than him in many ways and she was more than capable to deal with her own issues but at least... he wanted to offer her a place, right by his side, when she could feel comfortable, safe and loved. "Let's just rest together... that would be enough." If there was a way to help his friend, that was not putting more of his own burdens on her shoulders. She was busy enough being the medicine cat and as the deputy, he had to learn how to deal with his own emotions and weaknesses. But that didn't mean he couldn't sometimes rely on the she-cat when the pain, doubt and confusion were too much... he was glad he met her.
