Hunting with a "Smile"

(OOC: This supposedly takes place before Fernfeather lost her tail, which is why she's even giving pretending to be happy a chance.)

Today Fernfeather had been asked to lead another patrol. This time, she was supposed to take out Falconpaw and Wolfpaw. Great. More trying to hide her inner feelings with smiles and jokes. She didn't know how much longer she could take all this pretending to be a cat she no longer was.

She sighed and sat down by the camp entrance, then forced a smile when she heard the apprentices approach.

Wolfpaw padded up to Fernfeather. "I'm ready for the patrol," He offered.

Falconpaw walked up to Wolfpaw and Fernfeather. This was her first time out of camp. "I'm here Fernfeather! Sorry for waitimg for me." she apologized.

Fernfeather offered the two apprentices the kindest smile she could muster, then led them out of camp without much speaking, which was very strange for the normally energetic, talkative she-cat. She made sure to steer as far away from the Thunderpath as possible heading towards the border WindClan shared with RiverClan.

"Alright, you two, listen closely," Fernfeather began with uncharacteristic sternness. "You two can hunt anywhere you want so long as it's near me. I want to be able to hear if either of you get into any trouble with a predator. No hunting anywhere close to RiverClan's border, they're already edgy as it is with us and ThunderClan. And for StarClan's sake, please be safe and careful whatever you do."

Wolfpaw blinked. "The border with Riverclan is the gorge. We're not allowed to hunt over there ANYWAY." He spotted a bird and stalked it before pouncing as it flew, hooking his claws on its wing and dragging it down. He paused for a moment as he watched the bird struggle to remove its wing from his paw, obviously filled with fear. It wiggled and flapped, but he was too strong. He reached his head down to the level of the bird, looking into its agitated eyes as he opened his mouth to let his teeth shine. The bird gave out a screeching tweet and tried even harder to get away. It was a really small bird, so he was able to fit its entire body in his mouth without crunching it. The bird flapping and struggling and such in his mouth was so satisfying. But it had to die somehow. He sat down, then reached his paws up by his head, then opened his mouth. The bird shot out of his mouth, straight into his paws. He pulled it back down to the ground and slit its throat, slowly as he watched the fear and pain ebb away into the blank stare of a dead bird. He spat out feathers. Ew.

Falconpaw nodded, signaling to the warrior that she understood. The apprentice walked off, searching for Prey to catch. The she-cat soon found herself stalking a rabbit. She waisted no time in pouncing. The apprentice then caught it. She walked away, prey in her jaws. A proud expression on her face could be seen. That was her first catch! She was going off in search for more.

Fernfeather tried not to growl at Wolfpaw's response, though she was more irritated at herself. How could she have been so stupid? Of course the gorge was the border between RiverClan and WindClan! She huffed and decided to begin looking for prey herself. She quickly found a squirrel darting across the moor, and she decided to give chase, hoping that her eye wouldn't keep her from stumbling and missing her catch.

The squirrel suddenly dashed right back towards her from the bushes it was originally headed towards, and a moment later a large red fox crashed through the snow-covered shrubbery. It snapped at the squirrel, but it dived into the shelter of a small rabbit warren. It snarled as it misses its catch, but then its focus shifted to Fernfeather, whose fur bushed out in horror. It lashed towards her and tried clamping its sharp fangs into her, but she dodged to the right at the last second and leaped up on it, snarling as she gripped its shoulders as hard as she could with her claws.

Fernfeather used Leap-and-Hold on Fox, dealing 9 damage and costing 10 stamina.

Fox is Pinned for one turn.

Falconpaw jumped when she heard sounds of a battle. She ran over to the noise and saw Fernfeather fighting a fox. The apprentice let out a battle cry and rammed her body as fast as she could to the fox's side. She managed to knock it to the ground.
