The "Cheer" of a One-Eyed Hunter

Fernfeather padded to the camp entrance and waited for the other two cats to join her patrol. She smiled. She was getting very tired of smiling. She was getting very tired of pretending to be joyful and cheery for the sake of her Clanmates. There was hardly anything to be happy about. War was coming to the Clans, and it wasn't like she and her one good eye would be of any use in the battle.

Still, she wanted to at least attempt to seem chipper than she really was for the sake of her Clan, and especially for special cats she held close to her like Squirrelpaw, Softpaw, and Quailfeather. If they saw just how down and depressed she truly was on the inside, they would seriously begin to worry, and she didn't want that for them. She didn't want to drag any cat down with her sorry pity party.

"Hello Fernfeather. Room for another on a patrol?" Nectarleap chirped cheerfully as he padded out of the warriors' den. He liked the happy young she-cat, she was a lot like him. Just as far as he knew, she didn't keep as many secret sorrows. She had never had to experience death, so her cheer was most likely completely genuine. He had even found many things to be happy about since the death of his mate and kits, so most likely at least some of every cat's joy was real. For now, he just wanted to feel the wind in his fur as he hunted some rabbits for his clan. There was nothing better.

Stormpaw has overslept again. Again! How could he let this happen?! He wasn’t some useless, lazy fur ball! He burst out of the apprentice den and hurtled over to the warriors as fast as his legs could take him, which was pretty fast considering he had only just woken up. He shook the sleep from his body once he arrived. ”Sorry I’m late!” He apologised.

Fernfeather forced a wider smile at Nectarleap and Stormpaw, but she couldn't seem to muster her usual purr of greeting. "Of course there's room for you, Nectarleap! And don't worry, Stormpaw, you're just fine. I was thinking we could hunt up by the moor today. Well, our entire territory is nothing but moor, so anywhere I suppose!" Again, she couldn't purr with laughter at her joke. It was just getting too hard too quickly to stay happy...

She led the way out of camp and into the open-aired territory. She turned to the other warrior and apprentice. "Let's all do our very best today! Perhaps we could even catch some RiverClan water voles or ShadowClan mice. But don't get anywhere close to the Thunderpath!" Her tone suddenly shifted from fakingly cheerful to stern and serious, borderline angry.

This really wasn't like her at all...

(OOC: So for hunting, I will go after you two, but the order will be me, then Squirrelnose, then Titanium. :3)

"Lead the way," Nectarleap purred, following Fernfeather out into the open moors of WindClan territory. Her jokes reminded him of his own, not quite funny enough to get a laugh. Oh well. A cat could always try. As the gray warrior's voice turned turned serious and on the brink of anger, the experienced warrior looked at her in shock. For a few moments he wondered where the emotion that was so rare in her came from, then remembered her blind eye. He looked at her sympathetically for a few moments before turning his nose to the wind. The scent of a hare entered his nose, and the tricolored tom followed the trail, leading him to a clump of a gorse. A small hare had found a cover from the snow and a source of food, and didn't seem to be alert. Perfect. Checking to make sure he was downwind, he crouched down to his stomach. His movements were silent as he slid towards his target, not wishing the grass beside him and hardly making a print in the snow. Once close enough, he mentally prepared himself before leaping. His back paw caught on a tendril of the bush, alerting the hare of his presence. Before it had enough time to sprint away into the distance, the warrior lunged for it. It was a clean kill with a quick bite to the neck, but sent him sprawling. Getting up, he whispered thanks to StarClan before heading back to his patrol.

Stormpaw openly flinched at Fernfeather’s tone. He stood still in shock for a moment. That wasn’t like the happy, excited warrior he knew! He shook his head quickly and bounced away, the wind ruffling his fur. He loved the moors more than almost anything. He stopped pretty quickly when the scent of rabbit hit his nose. Yes! He looked around, crouching low in the grass, and he saw it. The fluffy white tail was the only thing alerting Stormpaw to it’s presence, as it bobbed about. The rest of it was well camouflaged in the snow. He licked his lips and moved forwards stealthily, his claws unsheathed. He wasn’t even close when it looked up in alarm and sprinted away. Stormpaw stood still for a moment out of confusion, when a shadow appeared on the ground. He looked up just in time to see a massive bird of prey swoop down and claw his left shoulder with its super sharp talons. ”Nectarleap! Fernfeather!” He cried out, trying to run away as fast as he could while ignoring the blood dripping into the snow. The sharp pain was almost unbearable, but he couldn’t do much about it. He just managed to return to the patrol, the eagle flying fast behind him.

Fernfeather gasped at the screech that came from Stormpaw. She gulped nervously, trembling a little. She wasn't a very good hunter anymore thanks to her blinded eye, so battling would really hold her back. But... still! Her Clanmate was in trouble, and she had to do everything she could to protect them, with or without full vision! She snarled and dashed at the eagle from the side, slamming her shoulder into its side and knocking it out of the air.

Fernfeather used Run-and-Tackle on Eagle, dealing 9 (+3) damage and costing 10 stamina.

Nectarleap's amber eyes had been searching the close by moor, looking for a place to burry his catch. That was, until the scent of blood hit his nose and Stormpaw's cry for help rang through the air. The hare dropped clumsily from his jaws as he sprinted towards his apprentice, not hesitating for a moment. He was an experienced warrior, he could take on an eagle. Especially if his apprentice's well-being was on the line. Fernfeather got there first, and his sprint didn't slow as she slammed into the bird. His white paws shot over the grass, rising up onto his hind legs upon reaching the eagle. His unsheathed claws slammed down powerfully, one hitting it's eye and the other hitting its neck. Though he would usually be panting for breath right now, need to protect the tom he had sworn to protect caused him to hardly feel drained of energy. He would make sure this bird wouldn't hurt his apprentice ever again.

Nectarleap used Upright Front Paws on Eagle, dealing 15 damage and using 15 (20-5) stamina.

Stormpaw sighed in relief, thankful that the warriors were able to help attack the fierce predator. He lunged forwards to help, his claws striking the eagle's head and neck. He bared his teeth, hissing.

The eagle was utterly bewildered as two larger cats attacked it. The predator let out a shrill cry of alarm. Its wings flapped all over the place as it scrambled to get away, talons lashing out at the first thing it could find, which so happened to be Nectarleap's front leg. In its confused state, the eagle was unable to fly fully into the air, which gave it rather a disadvantage.

Snarling, Fernfeather reared up on her hind paws and reached up to swipe at the eagle's legs, then she suddenly lashed out at its belly before she dropped back on all fours.

Fernfeather used Rear-Up to Slash, followed by Swift Strike, dealing 15 damage and costing 25 stamina.

Nectarleap let out a yowl of pain as he leg was brutally scratched by the eagle, but was just glad it was him instead of Stormpaw or Fernfeather. Now this bird had hurt both him and his apprentice. It would pay. A slight bit of worry had been lifted from his shoulders, but he didn't allow himself to feel relieved quite yet. They still had to defeat this thing. The two other cats had managed to get it lower to the ground, but he still needed a little more height. Spotting a small rock, he ran a couple strides and stood on it, once again rearing up on his hind legs. This time, he brought them down over the bird's head, the force of the blow doing just as much as his claws.

Nectarleap used Upright Lock on Eagle, doing 16 damage and costing 25 stamina.

Stormpaw let out a hiss of pure fury as the eagle attacked his mentor. How dare that filthy beast hurt Nectarleap? He snarled and ignored the pain in his shoulder as he sprinted once again towards the eagle. He vented his anger through his fighting, adrenaline pulsing through his veins as he pummeled the predator with his claws.

The eagle screeched at the attacks. How were these cats so strong? It was going, going... The last strike was enough to kill the predator as it lay limp on the frosty, snow-covered ground.

Fernfeather panted heavily, tired out from the fight, though she bore no injuries from the fight. The apprentice and her mentor, however, did, and she turned to them. "Are you both okay? Do you think you need to head back to camp?"
