Returning To The Old Duties (Closed)

The leafbare had covered the marshy territories with white snow and the air was cold but the flame-furred warrior didn't notice that too much because he was too focused leading the patrol. He looked from the corner of his eyes that everyone was following and he then turned his sight back to the front. It was weird to come back to patrolling after being in the camp for too long but... he kind of missed it.

"Okay! This will be our hunting spot for today! Prey is scarce during this season but be sure to bring back here at least two pieces of prey. We need to feed the elders, queens and kits so there's no time to lose, all right?" He mewed, stopping and looking back at the patrol with an inquisitive but friendly expression.

Sootpaw followed Firestone with the rest of the patrol. The days were getting steadily colder, and a lot of water was frozen over. He had been going on more hunting patrols nowadays; ShadowClan needed food, after all. He hated the snow, but thought of the kits, who he didn't hate as much as a lot of the apprentices and warriors in his Clan. Firestone stopped and so did Sootpaw.

Newtpaw's fur was fluffed out in order to keep himself as warm as he could be in the cold weather. Leafbare was all the apprentice really knew about. He knew that there were times when it was warmth, and plants grew, and prey wasn't scarce, but he had just never had the chance to experience it for himself. Newtpaw paused behind Sootpaw who had also stopped because of Firestone. The tom glanced over at the warrior, putting on a confident smile. He completely understood why hunting was important even though it was cold and snowy. Cats did have to be fed, right?

OOC: I think we're enough :3 Let's do this! This will be over when your cats catch two pieces of prey, okay? ;) Okay, this was really bad luck but I guess we can continue with this :/ I'll roleplay the predator.

IC: The tom smiled at the two young cats, flicking his tail. Even if his inner world was a misery, he had to be strong and show that everything was okay. It wasn't the apprentice's fault so he shouldn't a grumpy and saddened warrior in front of them. "Well, what are you waiting? We don't have all the time in the world, let's go!" He mewed enthusiastically.

The stocky warrior left the group and started searching for food in the snow. His eyes caught the silhouette of a small mouse jumping to move in the thick white cape. Crouching and hiding from the sight of the rodent, Firestone moved slowly toward the prey and when he was dangerously close, he jumped. But a shadow made him change his direction at the right moment. A huge eagle flew close to the warrior, aiming to reach him with his claws but failing. The predator flew up once more, searching for a new victim.

In the ground, the tom looked at the other apprentices as he called their names. "Sootpaw! Newtpaw! There's an eagle here! Be careful!" He mewed loudly, making sure they saw the imminent danger above their heads. This patrol wasn't going like he expected but maybe... they could use this chance to bring back a bigger prey for the clan!

Sootpaw set off, beginning to look for prey. He put his muzzle to the ground and sniffed around until he found a trail. It smelt like mouse. He began stalking towards it... Just then, a large shadow passed over his head, scaring both the prey and Sootpaw. What is that? He wondered. Then, he heard Firestone yell, 'There's an eagle here!' and looked up. The eagle was fast, but Sootpaw could see the glint of its razor-sharp talons and beak. "How do we attack it? It's way above our heads!" he asked the ginger-furred warrior.

An eagle?
The tortoiseshell apprentice's eyes immediately lifred up to the sky where he instantly spotted the danger. Newtpaw had heard about how eagles and hawks could pick up kits, apprentices, and maybe even warriors, and carry them off to their nests that were up in trees. The tom decided not to yell out, because it would just attract more attention to himself and the patrol. He slowly shrank back into the shadow that was casted by the limbs of a snow-covered tree. If he stayed there until the eagle attacked, then maybe he could spring out and use the element of surprise if it was needed.

Before Firestone could answer, the eagle already chose the easier and smaller victim. The huge bird flew toward the black and white apprentice and attacked with its claws. The warrior couldn't stay still when the young cat was being hurt and he jumped toward the predator with unsheathed claws and threw it on the ground away from Sootpaw. "Now!" He mewed loudly so the other apprentices would start the fight now that the eagle was in the ground.

Sootpaw yowled in pain as the eagle's talons raked into his skin, causing a large, open gash on his forehead and a tear in his left ear. Blood dripped into his eyes, blinding him. He heard Firestone's yell and a loud, pained shriek that must have come from the massive bird. Taking this opportunity, Sootpaw navigated towards the eagle and sprung onto it. His measurements were just about correct, and after some minor adjustments he had his claws and teeth digging into the eagle's back and neck.

Newtpaw drew in a sharp breath as he watched the eagle attack Sootpaw. The apprentice watched from his place in the shadows for a couple of heartbeats as both Firestone and Sootpaw decided to strike back. Newtpaw shot out from under the tree, unsheathing his claws as he did so, and furiously swiped at the eagle in an attempt to wound it even more.

The eagle cried in pain when he felt that body over his wings, making them unable to fly. The predator batted its wings furiously, trying to get rid of the apprentice but failing miserably.

On the other side, Firestone hissed angrily as he trotted forward to the face of the eagle, rearing up and cutting its face with unsheathed and fiery claws.

Firestone used Upright front paws, dealing 13 damage and costing 20 stamina.
Eagle is stunned for one turn.

Sootpaw grinned at the sound of the eagle's shrill cry of pain and dug his claws and teeth in even further. He was still blinded by blood, but he could feel the eagle weaken beneath him. He heard the 'swoosh' of Firestone's paw and another cry of agony from the bird. Just a few more attacks and ShadowClan would have itself the best meal they've had since Greenleaf.

The eagle was weakening, that was obvious. Newtpaw's yellow eyes glittered, and he was eager to finally bring this creature back to camp as prey. He'd get so much praise for it! Well, correction, the entire patrol would get praise for it. At least he'd end up getting some. The ShadowClan apprentice couldn't go for the belly, or for the tail, so he decided to do the same thing that he had done before. With as much force as before, and maybe even more, Newtpaw slashed his claws across the eagle.

Finally, it was their chance. With the last yowl, the large warrior slashed the neck of the bird with his right paw, killing it quickly. But he didn't celebrate the hunt. Instead, he fixed his eyes on the wounded apprentice that was on the top of the eagle. "Good job you too but now we must go fast to the camp. Newtpaw, take Sootpaw to the medicine cat den and help him if it's necessary. I will carry the eagle to the fresh-kill pile and I will join you immediately. Now go!" He mewed serious as he picked up the prey from the scruff, ready to bring it back to the camp quickly. Firestone was worried about the young apprentice... that ear didn't seem well at all.
