Sparkpaw's Assesment

The usual self of the dappled orange tom seemed to be lost after what happened. All his world... the family he thought he was... all a lie. His parents... his foster mother. And now his brother was confined to live as a replacement for a medicine cat because of Magpiestar's decision. It was true that he made a mistake by attacking their mother but he couldn't feel bad for him... and his daughters.

His green eyes searched for the gingery she-cat, emotionless. Today was her assessment... her last step before having her opportunity to the Moonstone and speak to Starclan. And after that... she would be a warrior. However, after what happened, he wasn't sure if she would have the emotional capacity for this test. After all, her father was now punished by the leader because of threatening the life of a former clanmate.

The fluffy ginger she-cat left her den with saddened green eyes. Sparkpaw has been staying in the den since the announcement of Gingerstripe’s punishment, too sad to even talk to the other apprentices or to his mentor. But today was different. She had to complete her assessment so she could be a warrior... but, was that her desire? Being a warrior? She actually doubted it. She only wanted to be one for her parents so they could be proud of her because she would follow the path of her family as a strong warrior of Shadowclan that followed the Code honorably. However... that honor and loyalty was gone after her grandmother’s betrayal and his father’s attack against her. What her purpose then in this world?
With those thoughts in mind, she reached the side of his mentor and uncle, one of the only cats that could maybe understand her. Sparkpaw nodded at him as a greeting, without saying any other word.

The warrior noticed the depressed eyes of his apprentices so he prefered to not bother her with the subject that was obviously making uncomfortable: her father. Firestone managed to smile at her but it felt off so he just stopped trying and just sighed, tired.

He stood up and left the camp with Sparkpaw by his side. After a while walking, the orange-furred looked at his apprentice with serious eyes. It was almost like he wasn't himself anymore. He felt... empty. Like he had a hole in his heart. However, the tom knew that he shouldn't disappoint Sparkpaw with his sadness. The last thing he could do for Gingertripe was to train his daughter the best he could, no matter his feelings. "I think... this is a good place for your assessment, Sparkpaw. You'll have to hunt three pieces of prey until the dawn. I'll be watching you. Your assessment starts now. Good luck." Firestone left her side and jumped to a fallen tree. With some moves of his tail, he threw away the snow and laid down there with his head lowered, seeing each move of the young she-cat.

Sparkpaw followed her mentor and nodded quietly after his instructions. The gingery she-cat waited for him to stay still and then she searched for prey. Her nose caught the smell of a mouse and she walked toward it until her light green eyes found the brown-furred animal. The apprentice crouched, walked slowly and then jumped, catching the mouse with her open mouth. She shook it a bit from the scruff and then returned to Firestone happier.

Firestone watched quietly and smiled slightly when Sparkpaw came back with a mouse. That was fast... just like her father.

She purred delighted as she returned back to the territory, forgetting about all her worries for just a few moments. She had to focus... she had to be a warrior for Tansypaw, Copperfang and Gingerstripe... for her family.
Sparkpaw lowered once again her body, gazing a the fluffy white fur of a bunny that was hiding in the snow. She jumped toward it when it wasn’t looking at her so she was able to grab it with her fangs and killed it fastly. Then, the she-cat returned and left the bunny next to the mouse, ready to catch her last prey.

Firestone licked one of his paws waiting for Sparkpaw. When he saw the bunny on her jaws, he couldn't help himself from purring. That was a good apprentice doing her job. She would make Gingerstripe so proud.... actually, Firestone was already proud of his niece.

Sparkpaw trotted away again, eagerly to finish her assessment with a perfect catch. Her next objective was now jumping next to a puddle. This time, the she-cat was more risky. She approached the frog more than she usually did and then she jumped toward it with unsheathed claws. For he luck, the animal didn’t notice her until it was too late. The gingery she-cat once again returned to Firestone with triumphantly smile. She did it. She actually did it! ”Did you see that, Firestone?! I catch three animals in a row without missing one! Thank you so much for training me!” She said bouncing around excited.
