There's No Time to Lose

The brown tabby she-cat led the patrol with her tail held up proudly. Since her battle with that Skyclan cat, she felt more powerful and confident about herself so she was in a good mood for today's patrol. After walking for a while, Cedarstorm stopped the walking and she turned her head back to the patrol. "Okay! Let's get this job finished before dawn, all right! Come on, Tansypaw, you're hunting with me. We'll meet here when the sun rises. Now, don't lose time and start working on that hunting! Leafbare is here so we don't need lazy cats in the clan." The young warrior left the group with her apprentice following her from behind.

She smelled the air and soon noticed that some mouses were near. "Okay Tansypaw, now go ahead and show to the rest how great you're when you hunt. I'll be waiting here as I hunt something else." She said quietly to the black and white she-cat.

Owlpaw nodded and separated from the group. The young tom wanted to go on a patrol today. He had noticed Cedarstorm forming one so he decided to join her. It felt a bit weird being with his big brother's mate on a hunting patrol but at least he was away now.

The apprentice had tracked down a large frog. He never liked frogs because they were slimy but he had to bring back as much prey as he could for the clan. He was now crouched, staring at the back of a fat frog. How could it still be fat in leaf-bare? He shook his head to clear the thoughts. After a few still moments, he made a leap toward the prey.

Owlpaw had successfully caught it. He did a small victory hop and headed on to bury his prey. Afterwards, he was off once more to find more prey.

"Okay!" Tansypaw glowed under her mentor's praise. Hunting was by far her favorite part of being an apprentice. She bounded off and stopped a little ways away from Cedarstorm. Tansypaw pricked her ears and scoured the forest floor for any movement. After a short time, she heard a mouse scuffling under some leaves a few fox-lengths away, so she lowered her body into a crouch and stalked up carefully behind it. Then she pounced, killing it with a swift, clean bite. After kicking a bit of dirt over her prey, she hurried off again to find more.

The warrior smiled at her apprentice before turning her blue gaze at a bird that was walking clumsily in a puddle not far away from them. She lowered her body and, hiding behind a tree, the she-cat approached the animal slowly. When the dove was getting closer to drink from the puddle, she jumped quickly and caught it with her fangs. Its wings moved desperately but the experienced hunter didn't leave it until the prey stopped moving.

She walked back to the two apprentices and left the prey under a bush and buried it there, so no predator could find the corpse so easily. "Good job you two. One prey and then I think we'll be able to go back to the camp, okay? Shadowclan will be grateful if we bring back 6 pieces of prey."

"Okay, sounds good." Tansypaw nodded and trotted away in search of more prey. It wasn't easy to find in leaf-bare, and it took her a while to find any. She slowed to a walk as she spotted a thrush sitting at the bottom of a nearby tree. She had never tried hunting a bird before, and it was worth a try. She lowered herself into the hunting crouch, stalking up quietly behind it. When it was a fox-length away, she pushed off the ground in a giant leap, landing just a bit short of the thrush. It flew up into the air and dissapeared over the treeline. "Mouse dung!" she grumbled, hurrying off in search of more prey. Next time she would have to get closer to the bird so it would have less time to react.

Owlpaw decided to go after a small bird. He wanted to see how well he could do. He began to stalk it. The apprentice made sure that he was well hidden and silent. After a few quiet moments, made his move on the feathered creature. He let out a disappointed sigh and started to look for more prey.

The she-cat noticed that both apprentices were having some troubles with their hunting. Uh? Maybe the snow is getting on their way. Time to show them how they should do it... She thought, following the scent of a mouse. Her smelling guided her to an empty old fallen tree. She jumped over the log so the little animal could run out scared. Cedarstorm waited on the top of the dead tree and when the head of the small mouse appeared from it, she leapt and caught it with her claws. The warrior heard the noise of the bones breaking under her paws and she took the dead corpse of the prey, returning to her burying place, where he left the dove a few moments ago.

The brown tabby she-cat looked at Tansypaw seriously but not so strict or angry at all. "Remember, your stand and the distance between you and your objective is essential. Now go again and do it better, okay? I'm sure you can do it." She said those last words with a motherly purr as she smiled at her. Her blue eyes gazed at the other apprentice, being sure he wasn't going to walk too far away.

"I'll do it better this time. Maybe I'll try to find something other than a bird, they're hard!" Tansypaw exclaimed. She sniffed, ears pricked, scouring the ground for more prey. After a few moments of attentive searching, Tansypaw located a vole near the base of a fallen log. 'This should be an easy catch,' she thought. She prepared herself to pounce on her prey, muscles tense, edging just a tiny bit closer to the shrew. Then she pounced.
The shrew disappeared into a hole in the ground that Tansypaw had not noticed before, and she landed on air. "Not again! I can't do anything right today!" she mewed, frustrated.
