Trying something new

The young warrior left the den yawning after a long nap. Firestone stretched his paws ready to try something that he hadn't since he was a warrior: leading a patrol. The stocky and large warrior walked to the entrance of the camp and smiled to his clanmates, wondering which of them would join him. Probably the apprentices would be more interested... "HI! Who wants to go on a patrol!?" He said loudly like he was, hoping that someone would approach him. The fire-colored warrior sat down, flicking his tail impatiently because he wanted to leave as soon as possible to start hunting.

Curlypaw was bored out of her mind. It seemed like she was always either working her tail off or sitting around doing nothing. And she felt friendless. Sure, she had Lilacpaw or Cedarstorm, but her sister was a warrior, and her other friend had stuff she needed to do. Right then, the prospect of a patrol sounded great. Eagerly, she stood up and trotted over to Firestone.
"I'll join," she proclaimed.

The tom smiled to the gray tabby she-cat, nodding energetically. "Awesome! We should go right now to not lose any second. Follow me, Curlypaw." Saying that, the stocky warrior stood up and entered the territory smiling happily like he always did. From the corner of his eyes, he kept his eyes on the gray tabby she-cat, being sure that she was close to him.

Curlypaw nodded at Firestone's words, following him into the territory. The satisfying feel of mud under her paws and the familiar sound of mice and reptiles in the underbrush sent a rush of pride for her clan through her, as always. Even if some cats in the clan were irritating, at least they had to best place to live. Once they had gotten a good distance away from camp, the gray apprentice scented the air, soon detecting the scent of a mouse. She padded towards it for a few steps before turning to the orange warrior.
"Hey Firestone, I scented a mouse. Can I go after it?" Though she hated having to ask permission to do a simple thing like hunt, she was still an apprentice and she didn't want to get in trouble.

The warrior was enjoying his walking when he heard the voice of the young apprentice. His green eyes turned to her as he smiled, a little confused by her question. "Don't be silly, Curlypaw. You don't need to ask me permission to hunt! Go ahead and show me and the clan what you got! The only rule here is not to go too far from me, okay?" He mewed with a light-hearted tone, understanding the concerns of the she-cat. He was an apprentice no long ago and he knew how frustrating was to not do what you wanted when your only wish was to help the clan. Why would he stop her from hunting? After all, she was going to fetch prey for their clanmates and that was more than a good reason to just do it without hesitation.

The stocky warrior walked to some bushes and sat down near them so he could keep hidden his body from the near prey. He didn't want to bother the first hunting attempt of Curlypaw. Then, he would search for more prey.

Curlypaw's fur grew hot as he replied, feeling like he was making fun of her. An angry retort was on the tip of her tongue, but she bit it back, not wanting to get in trouble. She just nodded and turned away, hoping to do something really cool and show him that she was worthy of becoming a warrior. Her blue eyes still showing her embarrassment, she turned away and scented the air, soon catching a scent. Investigating further, she saw that it was a lizard, basking on a stick in a rare spot of sunshine. Smirking, she padded closer, sliding into a hunter's crouch. As she approached slowly, she checked to make sure she wasn't putting to much of her weight on any one place. Taking a few steps closer, she pounced, throwing her claws through the back of the reptile's neck. Grinning she picked it up and carried it to Firestone, forgetting to give thanks to StarClan.

The tom left his hidden spot when he glanced again the tabby she-cat returning with her prize in her mouth. He walked to her, smiling. "That was awesome, Curlypaw! You catch that lizard perfectly! I'm sure that you will be a warrior in no time if you keep working like that." He said waving his tail from one side to another. "For now, we should hide the prey we get in that empty log over there and hunt near it so we can later take the fresh-kill back to the camp, okay?" With a move of his head, he pointed a fallen dead and empty tree that had a hole big enough to put some prey there. Winking as the flirt cat he was, the young warrior trotted a few steps away before starting to walk slowly, following the scent of a prey. His eyes gazed the silhouette of a small animal and, with a confident smirk, he crouched down and walked to it quietly. When he was about to be seen by the mouse, he jumped to the small body with unsheathed claws and open jaws ready to caught the scruff of the rodent. Since he was big and strong, he killed the mouse with just one bite and then Firestone ran back to the place where they would gather the prey. Leaving the fresh-kill inside, the large tom looked back to the gray she-cat, with a friendly expression. "We should hunt three or four more pieces of prey before returning.
If we had too much dead animals predators could be attracted by the smell and we don't want to enter into an unnecessary battle."

"Thanks," Curlypaw replied half-heartedly, still a little bitter about how he had laughed at her earlier. As soon as he was done speaking, she bounded over to the rotting log and placed her lizard inside, covering it with a few pieces of moss so that it remained hidden. As Firestone began to track prey, she slowly followed him silently, not wanting to alert any of his potential catches. Her eyes narrowed as he starting stalking the mouse, and nodded absentmindedly when he caught it. She took a few steps back as he trotted back over to where the prey was hidden. When he spoke again, she nodded and replied.
"Okay. I'll hunt something else now. Good catch." The last phrase was more of a mumble, as she could barely bring herself to actually compliment him. And personally, she wouldn't mind if something attacked them, as long as it wasn't a bird. Birds had ruined her life too many times. The owl, the blue jay that she was sure was an omen, the blue jay that caused her to meet Specklefang, even her rival's name was Crowfur. Shaking the thoughts of bad times from her mind, she scented the air determinedly. Soon she detected the scent of a squirrel. Her blue eyes lit up and she smirked, knowing how uncommon it was to find a squirrel here and how hard it was to catch one. She crouched into a hunting stance and quietly padding after the source of the smell, soon seeing a fluffy gray tail poking out from between the pine fronds. As she got closer, she couldn't help but grin in anticipation. Once she was close enough, she took her chances and leapt for it. Its beady eyes turned to her, and for the smallest moment it didn't move. Then it shot up the tree a moment to late.Though she had been among for its neck, her claws pinned it tail to the tree, and she jumped up as high as she could and just managed to grab its scruff. The animal was still alive as she fell onto her back, but she didn't let it go. After biting down with all her strength for a few seconds, she heard a crack, and the squirrel's life was over. Getting to her feet, she trotted back over to the ginger warrior, her confidence boosted. She dropped the small creature inside the log and just grinned. "Did you see that? I caught a squirrel!"

The warrior noticed that the she-cat wasn't really being honest with him. It was just a feeling but still, he thought that maybe she wasn't really happy to be around him. However, he didn't mind that too much because he knew he couldn't be friends with everybody even if he always tried to be kind and friendly toward his clanmates. Nodding to her last words with a flick of his ears, he watched how she left to hunt more so he decided to do the same.

Walking away from the log, the Shadowclan tom tracked the just made footprints of an animal, following the fresh scent. When the smell was getting stronger, he crouched once again keeping his up to not touch the ground. Walking slowly on the muddy floors, his green bright eyes glanced the movement of the prey and he stopped so he wouldn't scare it. The reptile stayed over a rock enjoying the sun while the orange dappled cat stepped closer to it. Putting all his strength in his hind legs, Firestone pounced toward the lizard and dug his claws on its back, killing it quickly. He picked it up and returned just in the moment he saw that Curlypaw caught an unusual prey for his clan. Smiling widely, the young warrior ran to her, throwing quickly the fresh-kill in the log to talk to her. "Wow! That is awesome! Squirrels are really good and hard to find here! You must be proud!"

"Thanks! You had a good catch too!" This time, Curlypaw's words were more sincere. Though she still thought that her own catch was better than Firestone's, she didn't comment on it. She grinned at him again, her pride at her catch not dissolving quite yet. Now very confident, she turned away and scented the air for more prey. Following the scent a little while, she spotted the creature that she hoped to catch. It was a frog, and it seemed to be eyeing a spider on the opposite side of it than she was. This would be an easy catch, and too good of a chance to miss. She lowered herself into a crouch and padded towards it quietly, still focused as ever. She remembered Daypaw's advice on how to hunt frogs. Don't change where you are putting your pressure, and have it evened out so much that your jump didn't even make a noise. With those those thoughts, she leapt for the reptile, grabbing it between her teeth and easily piercing the soft flesh on the back of it's neck. She carried the mossy green creature over to the rotting log, dropping in inside and then looking expectantly at the warrior.
