Late Day Hunting [closed]

Splashwillow quietly brushed through the thickly clumped reeds that gathered beside the lazily-moving river, ignoring the way the now Leaf-Fall brittle stems awkwardly prodded at her sides. After Otterleap's return and subsequent fight with Shellwater, the young Warrior had decided to take some time away from camp to enjoy minimal peace and quiet in the form of some late afternoon hunting. She needed some time away from the rest of her family to clear her head, anyways. Settling down comfortably on the cool muddy bank of the river, the calico she-cat braced herself for a potentially long wait for he appearance of fish. However, the sound of pawsteps approaching made Splashwillow's ears perk as she turned slightly to greet whoever was passing by.

Amberpelt weaved her way between the reeds on the bank, her gaze flickering up toward the sky as she carefully watched to see if there was any clouds on the horizon. The days were getting colder and shorter which meant less time for sunbathing on the rocks and the warrior knew she would greatly miss it once Leafbare stuck so it was her goal to squeeze in as much sunbathing time as she could on the Sunningrocks...But she halted as a faint movement caught her attention in the corner of her eyes, turning to find herself staring at Splashwillow.

"Oh, hello Spashwillow," she greeted to the younger she-cat in a soft voice, quickly realizing what the warrior was up to. Her eyes shifted back up to the sky before she blinked...And gave a shake of her head with a slight sigh. She was well aware of the familial fight that had transpired between Otterleap and Shellwater and felt terrible for the young warrior to have to see her parents fight like that. Perhaps it was the motherly side of Amberpelt that was speaking but she found herself unable to continue on her set path when there was a chance that the calico would be thankful for her company in light of the recent events. "Planning to hunt, huh? May I join you?"

Recognizing the sleek and immaculately groomed shape of Amberpelt, Splashwillow let out a soft chirp of greeting to the older she-cat. "Yes I am." She quietly answered, her small head bobbing in agreement to her own words. "You're welcome to join- we should make the most of the sunshine while we can." She continued, shuffling slightly to make room for the other she-cat. Amberpelt's kindness after Snowpaw's death hadn't been lost on Splashwillow and the Warrior found herself rather relaxed towards the idea of sharing her company.

Redirecting her attention back towards the clear and slow-moving surface of the river, Splashwillow spotted a flash of silver just below the surface of the water. Fish! Forcing herself to remain relaxed and completely still, she watched the unsuspecting fish move about below the water for several heartbeats before her own paw flashed out towards the creature. Thankfully, despite her lack of hunting as of late, her reflexes remained rather quick as Splashwillow was able to successfully scoop the fish out of the water and onto the muddy bank beside the two cats, where she quickly killed it.

Feeling a prick of satisfaction at the ease of the kill, Splashwillow made sure to move the freshly-killed fish out of the sun and into the shade of the reeds before redirecting her attention towards the river in front of her, her gaze occasionally darting towards Amberpelt as she waited for another fish to appear.

Amberpelt's eyes glimmered as Splashwillow happily agreed to let her join her, quietly slipping into an open spot next to the warrior as she watched the warrior dart her paw into the water and be rewarded with a sleek fish. "Good catch," the older she-cat purred as she turned her own attention onto the river. There was so many things about being a RiverClan cat that Amberpelt was proud of but the patience that each cat had to be one of the most proudest things - none of the other Clans were able to sit still long enough to even dream about catching a fish while RiverClan cats were raised knowing the virtue of patience. The only thing that was a shame about hunting for fish was the careful requirement of keeping ones shadow off of the river - it made it hard to admire her reflection while she waited.

There was a movement in the water that quickly pulled Amberpelt's attention to it, recognizing the shadow a fish beneath the waters. Her eyes quickly darted back and forth as she waited for it to approach, quickly judging its true location in the water before her paw darted forward into the water. She felt her paw brush against the scales of the fish and was about to scoop it out when the rustling of reeds threw her off. The fish darted away as she sat upright, tasting the air only for her hair to prickle as it certainly wasn't a cat that she scented. She spun only for her eyes to go wide as she spotted a gray form darting at her. "What in StarCl-" That was as much as the she-cat got out as the creature - a raccoon - threw itself at her. Claws swiped at her face, catching her muzzle as she was forced to back away to avoid the attack hitting her eyes.

"Gah!" Splash.

Amberpelt's eyes widen as the ground beneath her gave away and she slipped into the river, disappearing under the waves as the cold water enveloped her. She quickly lashed out with her paws, pushing herself forward as she broke the surface with a gasp as she shook the water from her face. She growled under her breath as she pushed as hard as she could, throwing herself back onto the bank as she lashed out at the raccoon before it could attack Splashwillow.

Before Splashwillow even had a long enough stretch of time to properly enjoy Amberpelt's kind praise, an odd shadow was thrown across the ever-moving surface of the water, scaring away the other she-cat's potential catch. She watched in momentary confusion as Amberpelt whipped around to face whoever had disturbed their little hunting party, but she was equally surprised to see a Raccoon of all creatures. How could such a loud and foul-smelling creature manage to get the drop on both of them? However, before she had time to process the creature's sudden appearance, it was knocking Amberpelt into the river and Splashwillow herself was instantly sent scurrying out of the way. She watched with wide eyes as Amberpelt quickly launched herself at the Raccoon from the river, feeling her heartbeat pump furiously in her chest, recalling the nasty fox that had interrupted her assessment with Amberpelt all those moons ago. "Watch out!" Splashwillow cried as the Raccoon slowly regained its balance and began to prepare for a second attack, but before it could do so, the little calico launched herself forwards.

With a loud grunt of effort, Splashwillow hurled herself into the undefended back of the Raccoon, ignoring how her shoulder painfully connected with the greasy creature's spine as she sent them both toppling into the river. A massive splash was sent rippling across the slow moving surface of the water as the RiverClan cat and the attacking creature vanished within the depths of the water, definitely frightening away any and every fish in the nearby area. Floundering for a brief heartbeat, Splashwillow's hindlegs quickly connected with the smooth stones that lined the bottom of the river and she found herself easily regaining her balance within the water. Exploding from the water, the young warrior quickly brought her front paws down heavily onto the Raccoon's head as she proceeded to hold the struggling and confused creature's head beneath the water.

Amberpelt stumbled to the side as Splashwillow launched past her, throwing both herself and the raccoon into the river. The older warrior scrambled to the edge of the bank, peering in worryingly until she felt a flash of relief as the smaller she-cat broke the surface. "Hold on, I'm coming in!" Amberpelt called as she dove back into the water as she realized what Splashwillow was trying to do, quickly making her way to where the calico was struggling to keep the raccoon down. This certainly was one way to take care of it. The she-cat planted her paws on the raccoon's head, aiding in keeping the struggling creature beneath the waves until its movements stopped completely.

Once she was certain that it had drowned, she turned and pulled herself from the river, shaking the water from her fur as she glanced over her shoulder at Splashwillow. "Well that was...Something," she said with a sigh as she sat down, licking her paw as she brushed it across her stinging muzzle only to wince as she pulled away to see the blood. It wasn't a great deal but she knew it was something she would need to have Icepaw take a look at. "Are you okay?" she questioned, hoping that the raccoon hadn't managed to strike her when it was fighting to escape their underwater grasp.

Feeling her shoulders roll as the Raccoon struggled beneath the water, Splashwillow was fearful that the larger creature was close to breaking free of her grasp. However, before that fear could come true, Amberpelt was diving back into the water beside her to help once more. Now that both Warriors were holding the frantic creature below the water, it didn't take long for its struggles to slowly halt. A part of her didn't want to kill the mangy Raccoon, but she knew better than to leave an aggressive animal like this to go free- what would of happened if it had attacked an apprentice?

Allowing her grip to go slack, Splashwillow allowed herself to take a moments reprieve before following Amberpelt up the muddy bank and back to their little hunting session. Blinking several times to clear droplets from her line of sight as she listened to the other she-cat speak. "I think so," Splashwillow mewed after several long moments of careful observation, "Just a bit cold and wet." She finally decided, taking a few steps back so that she could shake herself without spraying Amberpelt. Redirecting her attention to the other she-cat, she gave her an equally careful once-over before speaking once more. "Although I suppose we should get you back to camp so that Icepaw can take a look at that."

Amberpelt nodded in relief that Splashwillow confirmed that she was alright, taking a moment to push past her and stare at her own reflection. Her ears fell flat on her head as she got a good look at the bloody scratches on her muzzle that made every swallow a bitter, coppery one. "My face," she whined softly as her reflection rippled from a drop of blood. "My beautiful face..." she gave her head a shake, causing a few more loose blood drops to cause ripples in the water before she eyed the bobbing body of the raccoon.  "Should we...?" she drifted off before she gave a shake of her head.

No, there was little reason to retrieve the body. There was no way she was dragging that back to the camp when who knew what diseases it held. Besides, it wouldn't be their problem for long - sooner or later the current of the river would either cause it to wash up on the bank where perhaps some other animal would take care of it or it would end up in the gorge. "Heading back to camp sounds like a good idea," she meowed as she raised her paw to brush some of the blood away, praying softly to StarClan that the wound would heal with little problem - she couldn't dare imagine having a scar from a mangy beast ruining her perfect face.
