Your Special Day [Daypaw’s Assessment]

Blizzardstar took a deep breath, she was finally allowed out from the medicine cat’s den and stretching her legs felt amazing. However, instead of taking it easy she had decided to jump straight to work, her clan needed a strong leader instead of a sickly one stuck inside a den because of a dumb choice she had made without thinking on the consequences of not getting her wounds treated and finally, after all this wait, they could have it.

The first thing on her list was to help one of the apprentices to get their assessment done, and not just any apprentice. This was her own apprentice and her adopted son. She felt sincerely awful for not being there for them during part of their training like she should, but she could tell he had been growing strong and his training had been fairly good even without her around. She would later need to thank the warriors that helped her with this task during the time she was forced to fight off the sickness.

“Are you ready Daypaw?” She purred happily at him as she padded through a portion of the scorched forest, reaching one of the parts that were starting to heal and she was sure that had some prey nearby.

Daypaw purred as he walked beside his adopted mother. "Yep! What are we going to do?" The brown and gray tabby meowed.

The white leader smiled at Daypaw “Today you’ll prove the clan how effective your training was. I know I wasn’t there for a good portion of it due to my sickness and I apologize for that, but for what I’ve heard from the rest of the warriors I think you’re ready for this test” After speaking she looked around them, taking a deep breath with half open mouth to know exactly what kinds of prey were around them. The silent answer the air gave her was kind of disheartening though expected given the condition of the forest “You must bring me three pieces of prey before the sun goes down. It would be advised that one of them is a bird though not obligatory” Usually Blizzardstar would be way stricter and give very specific kinds of prey for the apprentice to bring back. However, in the current situation the territory was in she had to force herself to go easier on Daypaw, as finding prey was going to be a great challenge without any extra rules.

IC: Daypaw nodded and started to pad off to find some prey. He scented the air and smelled a squirrel and looked for it. He found the squirrel looking for something to eat by a charred tree and got into a hunting crouch. He stalked it and when he was close enough he pounced and sighed as he missed and it ran away.

Daypaw frowned and scented the air and looked for the squirrel he just scented and stalked it and then pounced killing it by breaking its neck and then padded back to his other prey and then went to find Blizzardshine.

Blizzardstar followed her son and apprentice, silent as a shadow even if the grey and black terrain made it hard for her white pelt to blend in, she even had learned to hide between the forest undergrowth when it was all green and bright, but this time she was completely out from her element. For this same reason she had decided to stay at a good distance from Daypaw while watching him, so her presence wouldn’t ruin his chances of a successful hunt.

She lowered her ears as she saw him fail twice, now starting to feel the true sting of guilt within her chest. Could she have prevented this if she had taken better care of herself? It was her fault that he wasn’t doing as well as most of the apprentices she had before during his assessment? Probably. She was going to make sure she made up for it later on, taking him on patrols where she would be teaching him a couple more tricks, even if he wasn’t an apprentice anymore.

When he started to walk towards her with the two pieces of prey she gave him a motherly smile “Only one more to go, Daypaw. You better hurry so you come out successful on this task I gave you” After purring softly and licking his forehead, she nudged him with her nose.

Daypaw smiled and nodded. He padded away and scented the air. Finding a vole he smiled and stalked it before pouncing and then missing again.

Daypaw sighed and scented the air again and found another squirrel. He stalked and then pounced and killing it quickly. He padded off to find his mother again and dropped the catch. "What now?" He asked her.

Blizzardstar watched once more as he went back to hunting. That was the second vole he missed, which made her wonder if his technique was wrong when stalking that specific kind of prey. Well, nothing a good hunting patrol couldn’t fix, and since he was showing no much trouble for the rest of the prey he managed to catch she decided he was ready “We go back and you deliver this to the elders and queens. After you’re done there will be a nice surprise waiting for you” She purred softly before grabbing a couple of the pieces of prey, willing to help the smaller cat to carry his fresh kill back to camp. With how short they were on food after the fire she knew for sure the clan would appreciate the food.
