Snowpaw stood, shivering, gazing at her reflection in the river. Though her pelt was thick, smudged just enough like the snow, she was cold. It was the kind of cold the seeped into your bones, even beyond that, and she was in one of her stages of thinking. It had numbed her; she couldn't feel her toes, and though her teeth were chattering, the kit-looking apprentice didn't notice.
It's all my fault. I'm a coward, that's what I am. If I hadn't…if I hadn't been there, none of that would've happened… she tried to dig her claws into the frost, but with a swell of fear realized she couldn't. Her entire body was numb.
She let herself fall sideways, into the snow, blinking her strangely beautiful mismatched eyes once. I'm sorry Heavypaw, she thought in a whirl. I'm sorry Poplarstripe and Mistywater. But maybe this is what I'm meant to do.
And she closed her eyes, let the snow fall. Everything was silent.
