Head In The Clouds [closed patrol]

Cloudpaw's gaze focused on the camp entrance as he stretched his hind legs carefully, gingerly working the stiffness from his muscles- the cold always made his limbs lock up painfully despite his young age. Turning his oddly colored eyes away from the prickly gap in the gorse wall, the young white and grey tom began to scan the camp for other cats who seemed to be sitting idly. A gap in the stormy weather had provided a clear sky and faint warmth which was perfect for a hunting patrol, and prey was desperately needed. "Hopefully something will be tempted from their den today- all the kits are looking thin." He reflected, his gaze drifting back towards the camp entrance, enjoying the faint sunshine that warmed his fur as he waited for others to approach.

Redpaw eagerly rose to her paws and stretched, thankful for the sunny day's slight reprieve from leaf-bare's usual harsh, cold weather. She felt energized by the nap she had just taken and looked around the camp, thinking of what to do next. A low rumble sounded in her stomach, giving her an answer and causing her to look toward the fresh-prey pile. Her dark grey-blue eyes eyes skimmed over Cloudpaw standing near the camp entrance before doubling back. He appeared to be waiting for something. The apprentice blinked warmly at her friend and denmate. She padded across the clearing, pleased to have a chance to speak with him. Stopping in front of Cloudpaw, the ginger she-cat flicked her tail in greeting before inquiring, "Have you had something to eat yet, or are you headed out?"

Cloudpaw's ear twitched in greeting, pleased that Redpaw had decided to join him. "It's been a while since we've spent any time together- I've been too busy wrapping up my training to spare anytime." He reflected, subconsciously tilting his face slightly to shield his green eye- most of the Clan still found his different colored eyes to be a trivial conversation point much to his annoyance. His feet began their trademark nervous shuffle as he listened to Redpaw speak, although he wasn't really that nervous truth be told. "I'm heading out," He mewed slowly, briefly looking down at his paws- despite how much time he spent with Redpaw, he still found daily conversations to be rather troublesome. Watching his snow-colored toes wriggle in the frost-hardened Earth, he forcibly swallowed the slight pang of anxiety that blossomed in his chest; his conversational anxiety had gotten better since his apprenticeship, but it still remained. "Would you like to come with me? I figured the break in the weather would draw some prey out." He explained, glancing up at the near-cloudless sky for emphasis, tail tip twitching slightly as he awaited the ginger furred she-cat's answer.

A rather loud rumbling from the young she-cat's stomach answered Cloudpaw's question before her mouth could. Redpaw's ears burned in embarrassment as she responded, "The fresh-kill pile could always use replenishing, especially in leaf-bare." Redpaw added sheepishly, "And so can my stomach, apparently." The white-and-grey tom's antsy-ness was almost lost on Redpaw. She chalked it up to him being as anxious to go hunting for prey as she was.

Cloudpaw let out a faint snort of amusement at the way Redpaw's belly growled before she could speak- well at least her hunger would lend her extra speed. "Well we should get going before your stomach scares off everything from here to the highstones." He joked, the faint prick of anxiety soothed slightly by the humor of the moment. He gave himself a quick shake before beginning to move towards the camp entrance; relieved to finally be off.

Slipping free of the prickly camp entrance, Cloudpaw allowed himself to inhale deeply- thankfully he seemed to be correct about his previous assumption that prey would be drawn out by the limited warmth of the day.  Gazing at the rolling slopes of the moor, he screwed up his eyes slightly as he scanned the slopes covered in brittle, half-dead grass. "Where should we start?" He questioned, looking back at Redpaw.

Redpaw padded away from the camp entrance toward Cloudpaw, excitement for the hunt beginning to build. She thought about his question for a few heartbeats before responding, "Let's do some rabbit hunting today! Where do you think we should sniff them out first?" She knew her rumbley tummy would lend her paws that extra wind of urgency, but the thrill of spending time with Cloudpaw, too, suddenly made her feel like she could do just about anything she put her mind to today.

"We can try heading toward's the Lone Stump- rabbits usually make their warrens there." Cloudpaw mewed, before padding off in the direction of the long dead stump. Picking up the pace, he began to run through the brittle, half-frozen heather, feeling the rush of adrenaline and excitement that usually came with running, and the cold, fresh air felt wonderful on his face. Weaving his way through the solid clumps of mostly dead grass, he quickly found himself perched on a high, rolling ridge.

The warm, musty scent of rabbit made Cloudpaw's mouth water and his paws stop- the scent was quite strong, and he hoped that the creature had decided to leave it's warren. Dropping down into a crouch, he began to stalk smoothly along the ridge, skin prickling eagerly as he spotted the small dark shape of the rabbit. Tensing his legs as he slowly crept forward, he waited for a few heartbeats before exploding forward and rushing after the terrified creature. Easily gaining ground on the plump rabbit, Cloudpaw hurled himself forward with a massive leap that resulted in the rabbit being easily captured between his front paws. Killing the rabbit with a swift, painless bite to the throat, he grasped the still-warm body in his jaws before eagerly returning to where Redpaw last was. "Your turn." He managed to mumble through the fur.
