Magpie in the Breeze (closed training topic)

Breezewhisker padded into the apprentices' den to find his brand-new apprentice setting up her nest. "You ready to train, Magpiepaw?" he asked her kindly.

Magpiepaw sat up straight at the sound of Breezewhisker. "Yes," she nodded, and padded out of her nest. In her mind, her mentor was important - for now. He would be the one to teach her how to hunt and fight like the warriors, but later on...would he be an obstacle? She'd figure that out when the time came.

IC: Breezewhisker nodded approvingly, though he was a little unsettled by the look in the young cat's eye. "Which would you rather learn first- hunting or fighting?" he asked courteously, giving his gray tabby fur a brisk shake.

"Fighting. Definitely." The black-and-white cat gave an affirming nod, and she allowed herself to smile, slightly. Both are important, but I need to learn to fight, especially.

Breezewhisker nodded, wincing internally. I was afraid of that. "All right then. I'll teach you SkyClan's special move. For this, you'll need to learn to climb a tree. Do you know how yet?"

Magpiepaw reluctantly shook her head. Pay attention now... She always liked to think she knew everything, but now she had to come to grips with the truth - she had to learn from others.

Breezewhisker nodded approvingly. "Watch, then follow." He backed up a couple steps, then used his powerful hind haunches to propel him up the trunk of a nearby aspen, sending a cascade of fluttering yellow leaves down. Landing on the lowest branch, he hung his tail down to balance as he sat. "Your turn, Magpiepaw."

Magpiepaw watched with interest, carefully analyzing each move Breezewhisker made. As soon as he gave the call, she hesitated only for a second, then she launched herself at the trunk of the aspen. She propelled herself up with her hind legs, just as her mentor had. The apprentice landed on a branch just across from Breezewhisker, pointedly balancing herself before she sat down.

Breezewhisker nodded at his apprentice. "Good- you learn quickly. Can you jump from branch to branch?" He stood up, ruffled his gray tabby fur, and leapt to a higher branch. He repeated the action a couple times, finally springing across into a maple tree's branches.

"I'll try." Magpiepaw stood up, using her tail to balance herself. She crouched slightly as she looked for a suitable branch to leap to. She pushed off the branch and leaped to another, just as Breezewhisker had, though she had to rebalance herself before she jumped to another, slightly higher branch. "How was that?"
