Babies in a Fog (birth)

She was a warrior. She could do this.

Another wave of pain washed over her.

She was a warrior. She couldn't do this.

Fogheart lay at the back of the nursery, in the dark. Her blind eyes stared straight ahead, and as usual her face was completely devoid of expression. The pain was overwhelming. She couldn't think about anything else. One young kit was already by her side, eyes and ears still closed, but he wasn't hers. She'd found him one day out in the territory while hunting, and he was the only kitten she was sure she could name by herself. Smokekit was alright, his fur did feel almost wispy under her tongue. Another overflowing of pain came and she let out a wail. No words, just enough to let the medicine cat know what was happening.

He figured it out. Cloudpaw calmly brought with him the necessary supplies to aid the queen. Her staying had seemed a bit strange to him at first, as she had seemed to be an avid Dark Forest supporter, but once he realized that she was expecting, if made sense. She wanted her kits raised here. Still, he kept an eye on her, as she did not seem to be in the best state of mind. When he reached the she-cat, he set to work.

Four more bundles were tucked into her side. Still, she did not feel the powerful sense of joy that was often described, only a deep-seated remorse and the though that she'd probably have to rely on her sister to help name them, as her mate had been killed in the battle, and she could not do so herself. Would she even want to talk to her? Probably not. She curled around what she determined to be her little charges and laid still, not quite asleep, although it was difficult to tell.

Cloudpaw left shortly, leaving a little bundle of herbs for the new mother when she decided to stir.

Porcupinekit, still unnamed, mewed pitifully to his mother.

The soon to be named Saltkit let out a quiet mew, beginning to suckle. She snuggled up to her mother's belly, wishing she would never have to leave, into this great big thing called the world. But right now, her only world was that of the nursery, quiet, small and comforting.

A white and light ginger spotted she-kit - soon Blossomkit - moved her way slowly to her mother, she could soon feel the warmth of her other siblings and her mother. She suckled, her wet and big bundle of fur made as if she were bigger than the rest of her brothers and sisters.

The small silver and white kit let out a small and high-pitched mewl, sensing the warmth of her mother's belly and latching on to suckle.
