Winter is melted by the river

Winterpaw decided to go hunting alone again and this time she would be more careful. As she padded along the pebbled river she couldn't help but admire the glistening swollen fast moving river. She as sat down at the edge she reached out for a fish and ended up lean over and falling in. This time she didn't think she would be strong enough to swim to any shore. When she felt like her lungs him were about to burst she surfaced but not long enough for her to catch her breath. When she went under again she never surfaced again and slowly drowned to death. She washed up ashore far down on Riverclan shore. Her once beautiful white and silver pelt was drenched and disheveled and her tail trailed in the river. Her chest did not rise and fall like it once did and she was still. Her pelt was ruffled by the wind and her body heat had already faded. She was far enough down stream that she was unlikely to be found. When she did not come back by Sunset with prey the clan could suspect what is happening and go look for her body.

It was sunset and Lightningpaw walked by the river. She saw Winterpaws body and screamed. "Somebody, anybody!"

Dewleaf dropped her newly caught prey and sped towards the desperate wail, racing through the reeds In the fading light. Halting as she came across Lightningpaw and the stench of death. "What happened?" She mewed angrily, her sleek tabby fur bristling and her claws coming out. Thunderclan? No, no scents. She peered at Lightningpaw for wounds, only to see the young apprentice Winterpaw behind her, approaching carefully she finally realized where the strong scent of death was coming from. Nudging the cold wet body checking for any signs of life, She must have drowned, What would cats think? We can't even teach our young to swim! She turned to the living apprentice and mewed softly. "We have to take her back, help me get her on my back" Gazing once more at Winterpaw, Starclan please watch over her.

Lightningpaw nodded. She lifted Winterpaw up onto Dewleaf's back.

Dewleaf suppressed a shiver as she felt the dead weight of sodden fur that was once Winterpaw lay heavily on her back. Carefully she made her way back to camp, the trek had taken a while as they had to go around dips and rocks, by the time they reached camp night had arrived and the stars were shining brightly. Placing Winterpaw in the center of camp she turned to Lightningpaw, "Go find Sparrowleaf and tell Mistfeather as well" her mew cracked with grief.
