Lightningpaw's Assesment

Ashcloud sat patiently in the shade of a clump of reeds. Today his latest, yet fully trained apprentice would test her skills in a complete assessment. She would have to catch three pieces of prey before the sun set. The glowing orb was hovering a tail's length above the horizon, and the heat of Greenleaf was beginning to subside for the night. The warrior began to groom his fur while he waited for Lightningpaw to arrive.

As Lightningpaw woke up in her nest, she remembered Ashcloud would be waiting for her. She padded from the apprentice's den over to her mentor and sat down in the reeds. She smiled. "When are we going?" she asked. She jumped around in her place, excited.

The older cat rose to his paws while responding. "Now," Ashcloud soon crossed the stream bordering the camp, making it in only a few strokes. The water seemed the simply fall off his fur, like the feathers of a waterbird. "Three prey before nightfall. I'll be watching you," He was about to exit through a clump of marsh grass before giving a small smile. "Good luck." Then he was gone.

The apprentice half smiled. Three prey before sun down, that shouldn't be too hard she thought. Lightningpaw padded quickly into the forest until she came to the river. She stared into the clear water waiting for a fish to come near enough. Soon, two fish floated to the top and Lightningpaw clawed them both. She brought them to land and delivered each one a clean killing bite. She buried them inside a pile of bushes and figured she would return later. She looked at the sky. The sun was almost at it's peak. Then, she went into the forest thinking, I should have some variety for show, right? As she got there, she sniffed the air. "Thrush, fish, and mouse." she murmured she watched the piles of leaves for any sign of movement.

The small warrior watched as Lightingpaw snatched a pair of unlucky fish from the water. Thankfully the sun was on the descend and clouds were attempting to gather in the west. Maybe it'll rain. We need it. He silently followed the she-cat into the semi-marshland. Hanging back, out of sight and smell, he watched.

Lightningpaw looked around the forest. She sniffed the air. Mouse this time. thrush again. and.. Rabbit ?' she looked around the forest for signs of movement. and, a little wood mouse scurried across. Lightningpaw walked up behind it. She pounced but, the little thing scurried away. "Dang!" she called

Ic- Following with delicate pawsteps, Ashcloud hid expertly in the reeds. His tail flickered when Lightningpaw's target escaped. "Well, you can't catch them all," he thought as his green eyes tracked the small rodent to its hole.

Lightningpaw sniffed again. She saw a little thrush and she pounced. The creature lay there, dead. She looked towards the sky and mumbled, "Thank you starclan, for this prey."

Nodding at the final catch, the tom emerged from the undergrowth. With the pair of fish at his paws, he motioned with his tail in the direction of camp and spoke, "Great job." The sun hovered below the treetops, casting dappled shadows across the soft dirt. "Let's go back."

Lightningpaw nodded and followed Ashcloud to camp.
