RiverClan's New Deputy

Fishstar couldn't help but shiver as she sprang up to the willow branch that overlooked RiverClan camp. Today, she had to make the most difficult decision of her life: Appointing her successor. All the way back from Highstones, the new leader had been on edge thinking about who she would pick, but to no avail. There were a handful of able warriors to choose from, and every time Fishstar thought that she knew who to pick, she re-evaluated their qualifications and ended up back at square one. Fishstar wished that she could have more time to ponder her choices, but a new deputy had to be selected before Moonhigh. All the she-cat could do now was hope and pray that she would know the answer when the time came.

Stealing a nervous glance at the night sky, Fishstar recited the familiar words. "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the willow branch for a Clan meeting!"

Wailingstream stepped out of the warrior's den heeding the call of his ex-mentor and now leader, Fishstar. It had been a tragic death that lead to her leadership, Sunstar had died of an illness that he'd been valiantly fighting, but it was for nought. However under the Leadership of Fishstar, he no doubts that Riverclan would not only endure, but flourish. And as she stood on top of the Willow branch where generations of leaders before her had stood, he was proud to have been her apprentice and now a warrior under her command.

But now it was before Moonhigh and he knew what this meeting was about. Riverclan needed a deputy, someone to support Fishstar and potentially lead the clan should the worst befell the grey she-cat. As he came and took his place beneath the willow branch, he prayed for Starclan to guide his leader to make the right choice. To choose wisely as Sunstar had clearly done with her.

Cinderfur quickly got up out of her nest and walked into the camp, looking up at Fishpelt-- Fishstar. It wasn't very strange to see the new leader up on the branch since she had been taking up the duties for quite some time, but it was strange seeing her as the leader. Poor Sunstar. Taking a new place underneath the branch, the she-cat was still trying to get used to the things that elders did. She did ache every now and again, but it was terrible quite yet. Now, as she looked around at the clearing, she could only assume that this was for a new deputy. Curious, she tried to look around at the warrior that she thought Fishtstar would choose. Honestly, she couldn't really tell.

Pride swelled through Mistfeather's body. It wasn't everyday your older sister became leader. And here she was, standing above the Clan in all her glory. Though the tabby knew what this meeting was for, she noticed something off in her sister. Something about her gaze seemed, oh, what was the word... Uncertain. Concern shrouded her pride as the realization hit her. This choice would effect not just RiverClan, but all of the Clans. It was up to Fishstar to choose someone responsible enough to handle the task of someday taking her place.

"Please StarClan.. Guide her in her choice. Let her choose someone worthy." the silver she-cat whispered. Mistfeather padded up to Wailingstream and took her seat, nodding at the tom. Don't let me down guys. she thought, glancing up at Silverpelt. There wasn't much else to do now, other than wait for Fishstar to speak up.

A petite grey she-cat slipped from the warriors den - it had been relieving too see Fishstar come back well from her journey, the ceremony must be for announcing the new deputy. It would be a tough choice, but Fishstar would make the right one just like how Reedstar picked Fishstar to be the leader. Her light blue eye looked curious as she padded towards the willow-branch, slipping over towards Wailingstream mewing him a polite hello. Her gaze spotted an empty seat next too Wailingstream and Mistfeather, she mewed her a hello as well. "Hope you don't mind if I sit here." She had asked her whiskers twitching as she settled down next too the two.

Icetail entered, a smile on her face. She was overjoyed by her new leader as was most of the clan. She knew it was to be a deputy ceremony, and so she sat near the front.

As more and more warriors gathered beneath her, Fishstar's nervousness rose. She tried to hide it as best as she could, but her tail-tip twitched with unease nonetheless. She thought back to the deputy ceremony in which she'd been appointed. When she'd looked at Sunstar, there hadn't seemed to be a trace of doubt in his eyes. He had looked straight at Fishpelt and named her without the slightest hesitation, and it was over. She'd never thought that choosing a deputy would be so difficult. Now that Fishstar was sitting in Sunstar's place, she cursed how naive she'd been in the past.

As her gaze swept over her warriors, the she-cat's mind raced. She had no doubt that all of them would die for her and for the Clan, but that made the choice no easier.

Suddenly, the words Reedstar had spoken as he gave Fishstar a life echoed in her mind. He gave me a life of good judgement.. Perhaps I can apply that now.

Fishstar closed her eyes and let her mind drift. She would need a cat that she could trust no matter what sort or dark words spread around the forest. She needed a cat who was experienced and compassionate, and would fit into the role of leadership when the time came. Most of all, Fishstar needed a friend who would support her every decision, and would set a good example for future generations to come.

She opened her eyes. I know who I must choose.

Fishstar corrected her posture, taking on a more authoritative pose. Her voice resonated around the clearing, strong and clear. "Cats of RiverClan, StarClan has gifted me with nine lives and a new name. I promise that I will try my best to lead you into an era of peace and prosperity. As you know, at the time of Moonhigh, a new deputy must be appointed. I have thought long and hard about this, and finally, I have come to a decision." Fishstar raised her eyes skyward to gaze at the spirits of her silvery ancestors. "I say these words before StarClan, and may they approve of my choice. Mistfeather will be the new deputy of RiverClan."

Icetail smiled, looked to Mistfeather. "Congradulations, Mistfeather!" She said kindly to her fellow warrior. Though she was a bit jealous, she knew she didn't have enough experience to be deputy just yet. There would need to be a lot of hard work done before another mention of it.

But she simply smiled at their new deputy whom she knew would lead them to victory at some point in time. "Congradulations," she repeated.

Silverwing sat gathered with the rest of the cats in the clan as Fishstar apoint the new deputy. Silverwing new that she had made the right choise and cheered "Mistfeather!" with her clan mates to support the new deputy.

Patchface's eyes lightened up at the ceremony. He glanced over at Mistfeather, Fishstar's sister, and gave her a congratulatory nod. It was sort of expected, as Mistfeather was a very experienced warrior.

Mistfeather sat in shock. Deputy? Me?!

Around her were cheers and congratulations before the clan began chanting her name. Amidst the celebration the tabby could hear quiet whispers. The new deputy quickly became nervous. Were they angry? Jealous? Or disappointed? The warrior knew nothing of being deputy. There was no way the Clan would accept her as their future leader. What did she have to offer RiverClan that her sister didn't? Glaring up at the starry sky, the silver tabby shook her head. I didn't mean me! How am I worthy? The words echoed in her mind is her body felt as if it was on fire.

But nevertheless, she was still before the willow tree where Fishstar was standing. There was no escape from it, and Mistfeather would have to accept her position. She couldn’t let her sister down, and she wouldn’t dare in a million years. StarClan had chosen her for a reason, but even as such she was still rather nervous. Why me? Why me? Why me? Of all cats, it had to be me? To say the least, Mistfeather didn’t exactly want this to happen to her. She didn’t want to be the center of attention. She didn’t want to mess up.

There were so many things going on in the RiverClan warriors mind that she had just about completely zoned out, she was just sitting there. Frozen like a statue with surely many gazes burning into her fur, the awkward scene surely didn’t make out for a good impression for her being the heir to follow Fishstar’s reign.

Snapping back to the unfortunate reality she was living in at the moment, her gaze then tilted back upwards to Fishstar. ”I will do my best, and I won’t let you down.” It was almost impossible to hide how nervous she was, but somehow she had managed to muster up a rather confident voice.

The sounds of cats already chanting filled her ears, and it only made her nerves somewhat worse. She didn’t want this… Mistfeather knew she would fail. But, she had already vowed to do her best and serve. There was no way out of it now.
