Dewpaw's Hunting Training

ooc: We can go ahead and do this while we wait for Dark to post in Battle Practice. We'd also be getting more work done without having 3 topics on at once, so this should help some.

ic: Lionstar padded silently into the apprentice den and gently nudged his apprentice, Dewpaw. Careful not to wake the other apprentices up, he bent down and whispered in her ear, "Hunting Patrol".

She was awake in a second, bright blue eyes wide in anticipation. Dewpaw quickly rushed out of the den, stepping on a few tails here or there. Once out, she headed staright for the tunnel without thinking to wait for Lionstar.

"Slow down. You don't want to scare away the prey." Lionstar warned, padding quickly after her.

"Oh. Sorry!" Dewpaw was now at a self-concious mumble, swinging her head side to side in search for the prey he spoke of.

"Keep your ears perked, and try not to swish the leaves with your tail. There should be some prey nearby." He meowed, smelling some prey himself.

"I smell it! I smell it! It smells like the fresh-kill pile, too. I think I hear something..." She strained her ears as forward as the would go, her fluffy tail swishing more and more as she thought of catching something.

Lionstar pinned her tail down. "Stop that." He whispered. "If you keep your tail still, it won't stir up the leaves. But if you don't keep it still, the leaves will make lots of noise and you'll lose your catch." He explained quickly. "Now, I'll catch this one, as an example, then you can try it as much as you like." The leader crouched, slinking forward stealthily, ears flat and tail straight out like a stick, just barely hovering over the ground. His mouth was open a little as he let the smells guide him to the prey. Suddenly Lionstar stopped, bunching his haunches up tight, before leaping a long jump over a log. There was a small shuffle of leaves, and over came Lionstar with a mouse dangling from his jaws. He dropped it at Dewpaw's feet. "Like that. It may seem a little hard at first, but it's quite easy." He mewed.

ooc: I didn't want to use the dice that time, because since it was an example it would be kind of embarrassing to mess that up while trying to teach an apprentice how to hunt correctly, so forgive me if I wasn't supposed to do that please.

"Cool!" Dewpaw whispered quietly. Copying his crouch, she stuck her tail out straight, and opened her mouth. She could practicallly taste the scents, and she quickly identified a vole sitting at the roots of a nearby tree. Stalking ever so slowly, she pounced. Her tail, however, rubbed against a bush as she leapt, startling the vole. Fortunatly for her, though, her claws met its throat before it could move. "I got it!" She shouted back to Lionstar, forgetting to be quiet in her joy.

"Good, but try to be a bit quieter. Your tail hit a bush, and you're talking loudly again. Other than that, you were great." He purred. "Now, if there is any prey left after you announced you caught something, try and catch 2 more pieces of prey. I'll make sure to help you if you mess up." Lionstar meowed.

"My bad." She smiled mischieviously and sniffed the air, scenting a magpie. A bird? This could be hard... and fun... Stalking slowly forward through the undergrowth, Dewpaw spotted the mass of feathers sitting on a root, pecking innocently through the leaves for seeds and bugs to eat, maybe to bring back to some babies. Perfect... Jumping through the bramble bush she was hiding in, she tackled the bird, nipping its neck and killing it swiftly- all in an awesome roll that resulted in a painful headbutt to the tree of the roots the magpie was sitting on.

"Are you alright?" Lionstar asked, padding quickly over. "That was great! Perfection. Just try not to hit your head." He chuckled, looking amused.

"Yup... juuust fine.." Dewpaw's head hurt, but she was sure she got the bird, so it didn't matter. "I'm glad I caught it and didn't miss and looked like an idiot, going around and hitting trees with my head. Must've scared all the birds in the trees away, though." Standing up and giving her head a good shake and a quick grooming, Dewpaw began to search for her last piece of prey. Maybe when they returned, she could get Redfern to give her something for her headache, because it sure didn't want to go away. Identifying the scent of a squirrel, she stalked through a small bush and saw the creature nibbling a seed. Deciding that now was the time to go for it, the small apprentice rushed from the bush, only to be tripped up by a rather gnarly root and break several branches, resulting in a faceplant to the hard earth and the loss of perfectly good prey.
