Dewpaw's Battle Practice

"Oh!" Dewpaw gave a short kitten mewl of suprise, not expecting the quick attack. Jumping to her paws, she copied Lionstar. However, because of her tiny size, she managed only to just rub his chin. "How was that?"

He nodded, looking a little amused. "Good. Now, we will do something very similar, though you must attack swifter and stronger. This is Front Paw Strike." Lionstar meowed. "Also, a tip: If an opponent out-sizes you, rear up on your hind legs as much as possible, but don't let your belly become vulnerable for a moment. Swipe quickly then drop on your paws again. If you can't manage that, you can at least swipe them around the legs or side to trip them so they fall, where you can then actually do some damage."

"Enough talk now. Try it on me." He ordered, crouching down and swishing his tail. He hissed, acting like an enemy. He made sure not to puff out his fur, since he had very long fur it might look a bit scary to the young apprentice. Perhaps when she was older.

She nodded, focusing for a second. Swiping with her paw suddenly and without warning, she got a good tap on his nose before retreating back a few steps. It was certainly much better than the first.

"Great!" Lionstar praised. "Now the next move is called Belly-Rake. It's a bit harder, so focus." He looked around, spotting a bush with no leaves at the bottom, probably where some prey made its home a while ago. He didn't want to example the move on Dewpaw, because he was much bigger than her and didn't want to accidentally hurt her. "Okay, watch me." He meowed, ducking down, shooting under the bush and spinning on his back, raking his claws on the bush before coming out on the other side, dealing a few blows to the back. Padding back, he sat down in front of Dewpaw. "Like that. The twist is a bit difficult, but it's the main part of the move. Now try it on me, but claws sheathed!. I know you can do it." He growled, getting into position again.

"Ok!" Dewpaw as having alot of fun with this, but now it was getting harder. Having watched carefully, she shot under Lionstar, turning and sliding underneath. Her paws rubbed lightly against his stomach and she completed the move with a few jabs to his hind legs. She'd had a bit of trouble with the twist, as predicted by her mentor, but she managed to complete it any way. "Was... was that good?" Dewpaw asked, panting for breath.

Lionstar nodded. "Yes, but next time try to be a bit faster. It'll make the turn easier. However we'll move on anyways." He meowed. "The last move to try out would be the most difficult: Leap-and-Hold. Watch carefully. If it takes a few tries, that's okay too." He swung around, leaping claws extended towards a tree, digging them in deep. Slashing the bark repeatedly, he jumped off before the tree could "knock" him off. "Like that. If your opponent is getting rowdy, jump off. Depending on how well the move is preformed, determines how long you can stay on, therefor doing more damage. If you can perfect this move, you'll be fine." He explained. "Try on the tree."

"Hhhmmm..." She examined the deep gougemarks left by the leader. "Alright, I'll give it a go." Having regained her breath, Dewpaw was now ready to try the move. She jumped at the tree, but she was too far away to actually reach it. "Oops..." Her ears burned with embarrassment, but she tried again, claws extended. She actually hit it this time and sunk her claws as deep as they would go out of anger and annoyance of her previous failure.

"Nice job. Now, pretend the tree is about the buck you off! You have to get off and regain your balance quick." He mewed.

Without hesitation, she pulled her claws back, jumping away as if the tree really were an enemy about to hack her ears off. She stumbled to the side a bit, but caught herself before she fell. "Was that alright?"

"Great! You're a little unbalanced, but overall it was really good." He purred. "That's it for today. Let's head back to camp now." Lionstar meowed, leading the way back.

Feeling pleased with herself, she quickly forgot about the blunder and headed back with Lionstar.
