The odd little kit

Frogkit yawned, walking out of the nursery and sitting down on his haunches. The cool swamp grass felt good against his feet, and he wondered what his frog friends were doing right now out in the mud puddles. This is home, he though happily, lying down on his back, paws curled up against his stomach as he watched the clouds. Mud stuck to his fur, but he seemed to like it. That cloud looks like a frog! His tail thumped against the ground happily as he looked for shaped clouds in the sky.

Rainwhisper trotted out of the warrior's den. She felt excited- for no reason. That's pretty much every-day for her. She thought about wanting an apprentice- but didnt want to be rude or anything. She saw a silly little kit outside the nursery. Hmm, havent seen that little kit around... she thought. She trotted up to the kit and gave a friendly greeting. "Hello little one!"

Silentherb came padding up from her den, and smiled at Rainwhisker and Frogkit. "Hello, Rainwhisker, Frogkit," she purred.

Rainwhisper grinned. "Hey silentherb!" She paused. "Do you know who this kit is?" she said, whilst pointing to the kit with her tail.

Silentherb just smiled. "Oh, yes. I forgot you hadn't met Frogkit yet. Moonfrost and me found him in the middle of the territory, and so we took him in. Sleepystar said that he could stay as we need more cats," she purred, and glanced at the kit. "So, Frogkit. You seemed to have an interest in Medicine cats, don't you?"

Frogkit stretched, tilting his head up looking at Rainwhisper. "Hi there!" He mewed happily. "I'm Frogkit. You must be Rainwhisper!" Frogkit bowed his head in an odd greeting. "Nice to meet you!" He waved his paw in the air at her. Then he turned to Silentherb. "Yes actually. How'd you know?"

Silentherb just smiled. "I was just thinking about how you were asking if Medicine cats healed when we found you," she purred, her yellow eyes shining. "I wanted to know if you wanted to come and see my den?"

Frogkit leaped to his paws, tail waving around in happiness. "Yes please!" He mewed excitedly.

Silentherb nodded and padded toward her den, flicing her tail toward the kit. "We'll be right back, Rainwhisper," she meowed as she ducked into her den, which had the sweet scent of herbs in it. The den was nice and neat, a few nests off to one side for sick cats to rest, and one for herself and for her apptrince, if she ever got one, and on the other side of the den was the herbs, each in little neat piles. In the back of the den you could see a small pond, and then Silentherb froze. A frog sat on the banks of the pond, and croaked at them.

Frogkit bounced over to the frog happily. "Oh, this looks like that frog friend I sat with when you found me Silentherb! I wonder what he's doing here?" He mewed, sitting down next to the frog and rolling over in the odd position he did when he looked at the clouds. The frog croaked again and hopped on his face. Frogkit giggled in laughter and pawed him off, obviously not knowing what this meant.

Silentherb just stared at Frogkit and the frog. "A frog in the medicine cat den? It his a sign?" she muttered, and then suddenly a sparrow's call rang out, and Silentherb glanced around, wided-eyed. "Yes, yes, this is a sign all right," she whispered, sighing. "I need an apptrince and my time is short..." She then spoke louder. "Frogkit," she meowed, which scared the frog so that it hopped off of Frogkit's face and disappeared into the water. "StarClan has told me something."

Frogkit scrambled to his paws, looking at Silentherb in surprise. "What is it? Maybe I can help with it!" He mewed curiously, hoping he could help with something for once. He owed these cats for giving him a home after all.

Silentherb couched down until she was eye-leve with Frogkit, her yellow eyes shone with warmth. "You can help me, Frogkit," she purred, wrapping her tail around her paws. "The sign was about you. The frog in the den...it showed me that you, the frog, shall be in this den as my apptrince once you become six moons old. You will help this Clan as our medicine cat under the way of StarClan, and I shall train you will all I know when the time is right."

Frogkit's eyes widened, his mouth gaped as if about to say something, but too shocked. Slowly, his tail tip twitched, and then his tail began to wave excitedly. "Me? Medicine cat apprentice? That's great! I didn't know I would be chosen! Oh thank you Silentherb, of course I'll be your apprentice! But, I'm not six moons old yet..." He mewed, tilting his head. "It can't be long though, and I can be patient." His deep orange eyes shone with excitement and eagerness, but his tail stopped waving and he went silent, as if determined to wait it out until his apprenticeship. Suddenly Frogkit leaned close to Silentherb. "Will I get to meet Starclan too?" He squeaked quietly.

"Of couse," Silentherb purred, gazing at the small kit. "StarClan always shows itself to a medicine cat, and sometimes you don't have to be picked by StarClan, but I was unsure of who to take, and StarClan just showed me that you were the right choice." She wrapped her fluffy tail around Frogkit. "Soon you will be six moons old, so you don't have to wait that long."
