Snaildance thought she’d had a heart attack when her apprentice returned home bloody, beaten, and smelling of a rogue. As far as she knew Boarpaw wasn’t the type to pick fights, and by his own words that had remained the case. He’d simply strayed from the patrol. It was odd, because she was his mentor, and therefore should feel comfortable scolding him, yet it still felt strange to do so. Hopefully the experience itself was enough of a deterrent. “Stay close, Boarpaw! And don’t be afraid to say something if you see or smell something dangerous. Last time could have ended a lot worse.” While her words could’ve been interpreted as some sort of I-told-you-so, the look of genuine concern on her face hopefully helped to get her intent across. He was lucky to be alive. Some dark corner of her mind imagined another horde of rats, or those huge not-dogs slinking through the marshes, waiting to consume whoever lost their way.
Shaking those thoughts away, the brown and white she-cat led him towards a relatively dry area cleared of undergrowth. Here a spongy layer of pine needles covered the ground and deafened pawsteps. An excellent place to learn how to use the darkness of night in lieu of other hiding places, especially where the reward would be some well-fed prey. The croaking of frogs rose up all around the pair as purple twilight faded into velvet night. “This place is only safe to hunt now; during the day there are twolegs and monsters about. There aren’t many places to hide, so make sure to use your pelt to your advantage!” Boarpaw’s tabby fur would help more than Snaildance’s own mostly white coat, however she might find some luck in masquerading as a moonbeam.

Boarpaw had heard the same advice a lot lately. Reasonable, considering ignoring that advice led to him nearly dying in this same grove, but that didn't him feel much better. He was punished enough being turn apart and left to bleed before he could even get a word out, and now he was being watched over like a kit to make sure he didn't stray. The worst part was that he didn't mind. He wanted to know someone was watching his back, to have the safety of numbers ensuring no one could creep up on him.
"I'll be better," he promised. Wandering off in search of rocks or whatever strange trinket caught his eye felt kittish now. He would do better.
He gave a subtle nod as he was given instruction. With no underbrush to hide within, he could only rely on staying close to the ground and the shade the tall pines cast on the ground below. Boarpaw took a few pawsteps forward, listing his nose to the air to collect the scents around them. He was immediately struck with the awful smell of monster, the scent of twolegs and their things determined to smother anything useful. However, underneath it all, he could catch the scent of frogs and toads and a few rodents searching for seeds among the needles.
After a quick glance to ensure Snaildance was still there and watching, Boarpaw slunk into a crouch, eyes scanning the open grove for toads. Tufted ears trained on their singing, careful steps creeping him closer and closer. Soon his target came into sight, the bumpy amphibian inflating its throat and singing in the hopes of attracting an audience.
Boarpaw's muscles bunched under his thick coat before launching himself at the toad. However, his paws landed on nothing but soft ground. He miscalculated, but a hasty bounce forward before the prey could bounce away rectified it. He still caught it, so that's what mattered...
He dispatched it quickly, picking it up in his jaws and turning to Snaildance for approval.
Boarpaw attempted to catch a toad. He was successful! -3 SP

Snaildance carefully watched over her apprentice, following nearly as slow as the shadows creeping along the ground so as both to not scare anything off, and to keep Boarpaw focused on his prey. Each part of ShadowClan’s territory had its own challenges. And while it might be tempting for cats to stick to parts they were most comfortable and skilled in, knowing how to adapt to different situations was imperative to becoming a good warrior. Not that Snaildance had much of a choice personally, as she herself preferred to hunt in the snow where she could easily hide.
The young warrior kept a hopeful gaze as his posture changed from searching to focusing. ‘What did he find?’ He leaped, and so did what turned out to be a toad, but it wasn’t getting away that easily! With a quick readjustment she saw his claws find their mark and she gave him a proud purr when he turned around to look at her, “Nice job, Boarpaw! That was some quick clawwork there!”
Light shuffling drew her ear towards a squirrel at the base of a spindly pine tree, its focus entirely on trying to fit an entire pinecone in its mouth. Though it was unusual to see one at this hour, perhaps it meant it would have a hard time seeing her in the low light. Giving the tabby tom a quick nod, she approached, arcing her path to behind the squirrel’s fluffy tail. She drew closer and closer until the timing felt right, then she pounced, pinning the creature against the tree’s roots. So shocked and surprised was it that it hardly had time to react before her teeth were at its neck, and its pinecone fell to the forest floor. A chirp of joy floated from Snaildance to Boarpaw as she turned back towards him. "At the rate we're going, we might catch enough to feed the whole clan!" Honestly, this was the luckiest she'd ever been on a hunt. Usually her attempts were a bit more... embarrassing. Thankfully Boarpaw hadn't witnessed that firsthand!
Snaildance tried to catch a squirrel, -3SP. She was successful!

Boarpaw purred loudly at the praise, though quickly feel silent and still as it came his mentor's turn to hunt. His careful gaze watched the she-cat stalk towards her own catch, his ears pricked as he intently focused on her form, taking note of what he should mimic. A few moments later, they had two tasty morsels to bring back to camp. "Let's hope this luck continues."
Keeping low to the ground, Boarpaw searched for his second target, the subtle sound of scurrying catching his tufted ears. A small lizard was still out long past when it should, slow and cold, perhaps ousted from its sleeping place. The young tom's pupils flared, his large paws drawing him forward step by step. Following Snaildance's example, he kept himself in what few shadows the clearing offered, getting as close as he dared without scaring the skink away. It seemed determined to reach a fallen branch where it could hide until morning, but Boarpaw was equally as determined to cut it off from sanctuary.
He lunged forward, his teeth catching the lizard before it could squirrel itself away. Pride surged within him. He didn't think he would be doing this well! Maybe they would be feeding the whole clan!
