Scorchlight had led Elmpaw towards a field, mostly clear from rivers and streams, dangerously close to the gorge. She knew she shouldn’t be taking an apprentice—her son—out near the gorge. It was reckless, and someone could get hurt. But as she heard the water gushing down the feared monstrosity, she knew that Elmpaw would be able to tell good from bad. They weren’t even that close, anyway. Scorchlight figured that if they were near the gorge, maybe she could scent Troutpaw. Was he dead? She pushed everything aside and gave Elmpaw a smile, showing how proud she was he became an apprentice. She licked his ear as a sign of affection before going off.
"Elmpaw, I figured we could maybe hunt a bit around here," she meowed calmly, her eyes flicking to a river a few fox lengths away. "We can try and catch fish there." She nodded towards the river and padded towards it. "Now, Elmpaw, watch closely," she reached into the river with unsheathed claws. Once she spotted a minnow, she flung her claws straight at it. She wouldn’t fluke like she did with Troutpaw. It fled, but she had hit its tail. Once she confirmed it wasn’t alive, she gently picked it from the water and waited for Elmpaw to try.
Scorchlight successfully caught a minnow! -5SP

Despite having been outside of camp once before (not that Scorchlight would know about that), the territory didn't seem to lose it's wonder. Especially as his mother was taking him much farther than he and Featherpaw had been able to go.
He wanted to see everything.
And he had his eyes set to the cliffs marking where the infamous gorge stood, the border between RiverClan and WindClan. Of course he had heard stories of it's deep caverns, but to actually see it was a whole other adventure.
One that would have to wait, apparently, as Scorchlight called him over. But he still kept that gorge in the back of his mind.
He watched as his mother plucked a minnow from the river, and then it was his turn to do the same.
Of course, he had not been so lucky, as his paw crashed into the water, coming up empty. But Elmpaw was a determined little fellow. And he was sure he could get this.
He just needed to be in the right spot. And so he looked to his mother, eyes shining.
"I have an idea!" And off he went to execute said idea.
The gorge had water below, and where there was water, surely there would be fish. Maybe even bigger than the ones they were hunting here! All he had to do was land in the water, and he would be down there ready to hunt! So now Elmpaw stood at the edge of the gorge, muscles bunched and ready to take the leap of faith. And he had plenty of faith, surely it would be just fine!
Elmpaw is attempting to catch a minnow. Attempt was unsuccessful. -5 SP. 55/60 SP

Scorchlight frowned a bit at Elmpaw’s fail but immediately brightened up. "Hey, we can always try again." But Elmpaw seemed to not care of her words as he told her of an idea. Scorchlight was confused; they came here to hunt, not play. But Elmpaw was her son, so she nodded. "Hm, well, what’s this idea-" She watched Elmpaw race towards the gorge, and fear crept up her pelt. "No, Elmpaw!" she cried out to him. Why was he running there? Why? She wouldn’t lose him... she wouldn’t... not like what happened to Troutpaw. She didn’t want her son to die. She instinctively clamped her jaws on Elmpaw's pelt lightly so it wouldn’t hurt but strong enough to tug him away from the gorge. "You can’t jump in there!" She said this with authority, feeling petrified. Why was her son trying to jump? Was he bored of hunting?

Elmpaw, for the life of him, could not figure out just why Scorchlight was dragging him away. He thought she wanted to hunt! "What's wrong? There's water down there, so there's probably lots of fish, too!" He didn't struggle as he was dragged away, just turned around to look at his mothtor (No, that term wasn't right, he would need to work on what to call her) in confusion as soon as she let him go.
"The fish are probably so much bigger down there. Why don't we go down there to hunt? It'd be so cool to show Featherpaw and Creekpaw how big of a fish I can come back with!" Once again his eyes were shining, as if he wasn't about to just do some extremely dangerous stunt.

Scorchlight nearly flinched, staring at the raging current. "It’s not safe, Elmpaw," she meowed, not wanting to see her son thrash or drown in the waters. "No matter how big the fish are…" she paused, "you might die." She tried to say calmly, but talking about death just frustrated her. "We can just hunt in the rivers!" Scorchlight said cheerfully, trying to pull him away from the gorge. She wanted to change the subject and take her son away from the death place of her former apprentice. She doubted fish swam in the gorge, but even if they did, no cat would risk their life for one. None would.

Elmpaw could die? What?
"But there's water down there? I thought if we landed in the water it wouldn't hurt. It doesn't even look scary! Does it scare you?"
Despite still wanting to try to go into the gorge, Elmpaw eventually relented, following Scorchlight back to the rivers. He still didn't understand, though. Was his mother scared of heights? It hadn't seemed all that bad to him... Maybe he could convince Featherpaw to go with him one day.
Instead, though, he continued on with his fishing endeavor. Even if the river was significantly more boring.
A trout had come along, and Elmpaw grinned as he managed to work it out of the river. This was much better than a tiny minnow!
"Look! I got it!"
Elmpaw attempted to catch a trout. Attempt was successful! -5 sp 50/60 SP
