Subject: Elmkit's Apprentice Ceremony Mon 11 Mar 2024 - 18:10
Poppyshine
The nursery was slowly growing emptier as more and more kits, had earned their place as apprentices. It was nice to see RiverClan grow, especially with some of their recent deaths…but the emptiness left a vacant feeling in Poppyshine’s heart. She shook her head, letting the feeling roll down her spine. When she was situated on the Willow Branch on yet another day, she announced, “Let all cats old enough to catch their own fish please gather for a Clan meeting,” and watched as the cats started to gather round. Poppyshine wondered if, eventually, RiverClan could reach a peace again; if these new apprentices could grow up in peace.
Once again Elmkit returned to the clearing beneath the willow branch in all his muddy glory, his fur sticking out in all sorts of odd angles. He could probably resemble a porcupine with how spiky the mud made his fur, and he had to giggle a bit at that thought. Maybe he could ask Scorchlight later to do his fur like that. He could go around chasing the others as if he was going to prick them!
His eyes shone with joy at the very thought of a new game to play. But first, there was the meeting at paw, and so once again he gave his attention to the deputy. He couldn't stop himself from brimming with excitement, not even caring if this meeting wasn't for him. He was just looking forward to what was to come. (Of course, if he was made an apprentice, that was just an added bonus!)

This time Poppyshine’s eyes landed on Elmkit and she tilted her head, silently inviting him forward. When the little kit was ready, she began the ceremonious words that had lingered on her tongue over the past few days now. “Elmkit, you have reached the age of six moons. It is now time for you to be apprenticed. From this day forward, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Elmpaw.”
Her eyes swooped through the crowd, finding a particular warrior. Troutpaw’s disappearance was sudden and rather concerning. Poppyshine suspected the worst had happened to him, which only added to the stress of recent times…but it also left one of their capable warriors without an apprentice to teach. Poppyshine didn’t want Scorchlight growing too stressed with Troutpaw’s disappearance, and so something else to focus on would do well for her.
“Your mentor shall be Scorchlight, who will guide you forth expertly into warriorhood.” She met Scorchlight’s gaze as she concluded the ceremony and then stepped down from the branch so the new apprentice and mentor could meet.
Elmpaw's eyes lit up as he was given his new name, and, as if he couldn't be any happier, Poppyshine named Scorchlight as his mentor! He didn't even know family was allowed to mentor each other!
Was that what they were? Family? Elmpaw smiled. He liked that idea. Sprucebark and Scorchlight had taken him in. They were family.
With that thought in mind, Elmpaw abandoned all ceremony, forgoing the traditional touching of the noses as he raced into Scorchlight's embrace. "You're my mentor! This is so awesome, you're going to be the best mentor ever!" He then turned to face the deputy once more, watching as she stepped down from the willow branch. "Thank you so much, Poppyshine! I'm going to be the bestest warrior ever, just you watch!"

Scorchlight smiled towards Elmpaw; his bouncy energy reminded her of her own! She smiled widely. The last time she had scented Troutpaw was near the gorge... maybe he just wandered somewhere. Maybe Troutpaw would come back soon... either way, her son! was her apprentice! She didn’t mind all the mud that clung to his fur. "Congratulations, Elmpaw!" she meowed ecstatically, pressing her body against Elmpaw’s, mud scattering against her own pelt. Adoptive or not, Scorchlight was sure to accept him as family rather than just a normal clanmate.
