Often, it seemed as if time dragged on, even as the days flew by--and the opposite was also true. Now Leopardstar found herself calling ShadowClan to attention, preparing to welcome into warriorhood a cat who it sometimes felt had been just a kit they'd taken in not long ago at all. Time passed, seasons changed, and they were weighed down now by the sickness; but still they persisted, and so did the cat she intended to honor today.
Here, in the safety of their camp, she could show some hint of weakness; but there were limits to what she could allow herself. She slowly pulled herself into a sitting position before allowing her voice to ring out.
"All cats old enough to silently stalk in the shadows, please gather for a Clan meeting!"

Everything I say is a lie, but they’re the only things keeping me alive
Quillpaw arrived at each clan meeting with dread in his stomach, and paranoia in his mind. Had they found something? Was his story incomplete? Each day he feared they find a lose string from his hazardly patch-together tale, and that he'd awake to his mother's rage-filled eyes and Sablestrike's smug voice calling them all together, with Pineblossom in the crowd, thick tail curling protectively over her kits as if he was some kind of monster. As if he'd kill them too. Quillpaw forced his heart to slow down, and looked up at Leopardstar to see what it was that she wanted.
Leopardstar surveyed her gathered Clanmates, looking out for one pelt in particular. It was a little harder than usual to lift her head high enough, but eventually she spotted him.
"We are gathered here today to witness the naming of a new warrior. Quillpaw, I ask you to step forward."
She waited a few moments, where she would typically wait for the cat to step forward. Just a moment to rest her eyes.
"I call upon the warriors of ShadowClan to gaze upon this apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of our honorable code, and I commend him to you as a warrior in turn."
Her eyes opened once more, meeting the apprentice's gaze. Even sick as she was, she found herself looking for the telltale signs of any soon-to-be warrior. Excitement or apprehension; each cat had their own response to these things.
"Quillpaw, do you swear to uphold the warrior code? To protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?"

Quillpaw’s apprenticeship had been so short, but Pineblossom honestly didn’t think he needed a lot of training. He was well-skilled when it came to hunting and he knew how to hold himself in a spar. He still seemed apprehensive most days when it came to the idea of being a warrior, but she was pretty sure that he would adjust once he actually became one; so he’d advised Leopardstar that he was ready to be a warrior. She hoped that Quillpaw would appreciate it.
She found a place near where Leopardstar called and she watched with her head lifted with pride as her apprentice moved forward with her call. She wondered what name would be chosen for him.
The moment that his name left Leopardstar's mouth Quillpaw's head snapped up with panic. It took him a heartbeat t realize that he had been called forward to answer a different question; a pledge that he prayed with all his heart that he'd never have to follow. But here, surrounded by his clanmates, he knew he had no choice in the matter. Just like his apprentice ceremony, his voice rang out unwavering, echoing words that had been repeated countless times. "I do."
Leopardstar allowed a smile to settle on her face, nodding once. "Then it is my honor to name you as a warrior before all of ShadowClan."
Quillpaw's own expression was hard to read, but the words were spoken without hesitation. That was enough.
"From this day forward, you will be known as Quillsplash. ShadowClan honors your determination and flexibility, and we are proud to welcome you as a warrior in your own right."
It took her longer than usual to step forward and touch her nose to his shoulder, but she did so; intent on honoring tradition even now.
"Congratulations, Quillsplash. Take some time to rest before your vigil."

Quillsplash. The name was oddly beautiful, but at the same time Bird felt as if he had been clawed in the belly, skin slit open to allow blood to pour out like a river. It wasn't his name. He wasn't Quillsplash. At least, he didn't feel like Quillsplash. It wasn't the name he was born with, nor was it the name he wanted. Cheers errupted around him, but he felt as hollow as ever. Take a deep breath. Nothing has gone wrong yet. His plans hadn't been disrupted, not yet. if anything, being a warrior meant that Pineblossom wouldn't always be on his tail. That's right, he just had to look on the bright side.

When his warrior name was given, Pineblossom joined in the cheers for Quillsplash, but her sick voice did not carry very far. Still, she approached him when the ceremony was finished and said, “Congratulations, Quillsplash. I hope we can perform our duties together.”
