Subject: Goldenkit's Apprentice Ceremony Tue 31 Oct 2023 - 19:56
"Let all cats old enough to run the moor gather here for a clan meeting!" Smallstar called out, immediately lowering his gaze to comb through the crowd as they gathered. Instead of a warrior ceremony, he'd be conducting an apprentice ceremony. He supposed some expectant apprentice would be disappointed to see him beckon a kit. Letting out a sigh, he relaxed his posture, easing himself into calmness before he would need to speak again.

At the sound of the leader’s call, Goldenkit came barreling out of the nursery as always, fully expecting to be caught by the scruff before she took three paces but still hopeful. Surprisingly, no queen appeared to stop her. Huh? What was going on? Well, if they weren’t going to stop her, she was going to attend the meeting like the grown-up cat she was.
The fluffy she-cat took a seat at the back of the ground, attention already wandering. This was not as exciting as she had thought.
Tallpaw pushed himself into the crowd of gathering cats, slipping past his clanmates to find a good spot. The apprentice had learned to be wary of news. It never seemed like anything good most of the time, but Smallstar did look fairly unbothered up there on the rock, and a certain chaotic kit was getting older. With a grin Tallpaw glanced behind him as Goldenkit hared out of the nursery and sat looking unimpressed with the crowd. The fact that none of the queens had tugged her back into the warm den was telling. The golden tabby padded over to join her at the back of the crowd and flicked his long tail across her back. “You might want to pay attention to this next part.” He said and reached down to give her shoulder a quick lick, flattening down a patch of tousled fur.

Sootstorm settled down in the crowd, tail twitching with amusement when he noticed Smallstar's eyes lingering on a particular kit. Was it time for another Apprentice Ceremony already? The kit in question, Goldenkit, was talking with his son, Tallpaw. Perhaps they would become friends in their apprenticehood.
When the kit came into view, he called. "Goldenkit, please step forward." He allowed a moment for the kit to do so. "You have now reached the age of six moons and are ready to become an apprentice." Stars, it had been so long since Smallstar had to recite the words. "From this moment on, until you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Goldenpaw. Your mentor will be Nectarflower."

Goldenkit turned her face up to look quizzically at Tallpaw. How come she had to pay attention to the next part? That was hardly fair, and sounded like a lot of work. He could pay attention for her, how about that? However, before she could inform him of this obviously very brilliant idea, someone called her name.
Wait.
The leader?
Oh. Suddenly things were making a lot more sense.
Belatedly, Goldenkit scrambled forwards, standing below the Tallrock with her head held high, sharp teeth glittering in a wide grin. It was time. It was finally time. Thank the stars! She was beginning to think she’d never be allowed out onto the territory, to run until her legs gave out. Goldenpaw. She liked it. Oh, right- her mentor. Nectarflower? To be honest, most of her Clanmates’ names were kinda… dubious, to Goldenpaw, so she elected to turn and scan the crowd for anycat who was approaching her, giving Tallpaw a bright excited grin.

Nectarflower was getting her second apprentice, it seemed. Sootstorm gave his friend and former apprentice an encouraging smile, then raised his voice with his clanmates' to call out Goldenpaw's new name.

Tallpaw purred delightedly from the crowd. As always, Goldenpaw’s joy was infectious. He grinned back at her, eyes bright as running sap, smile as joy-stained and electric as her own. He dipped his head in fond acknowledgement. The golden she-cat would certainly learn a lot from Nectarflower. Without hesitation he joined his clanmates in calling out her new name, their energy like a surging wave echoing in his chest.

It had been a long morning for Nectarflower, who, after coming back from an unsuccessful hunting patrol, wanted nothing more than to curl up in her nest and sleep. This famine was hitting her harder than she expected, but what else was there to do but keep trying? If not for herself, then at least for her kits and the apprentices that needed food to grow. Of course, she couldn't expect her earlier hunting party to want to set out so soon...she'd need to recruit some fresh faces.
Before Nectarflower could set out on her quest, however, Smallstar's voice broke through the chilly air. Ears swiveling toward the tom, Nectarflower turned her head shortly after, green eyes narrowed dubiously. Was it more bad news? She certainly hoped not - Windclan had enough of that to go around what with the prey shortage and twolegs running rampant on their territory. Shaking the heavy thoughts from her mind, Nectarflower cast her gaze around the camp. Nobody seemed particularly disturbed and Smallstar himself was acting...normal enough. Just a ceremony or announcement then. Probably.
With her worries mostly quelled, the tortoiseshell she-cat let her shoulders relax, taking a moment to rest before she had to go back out in search of prey for the clan. As Smallstar went on, Nectarflower found herself blissfully ignorant to the world around her. It wasn't often that she allowed herself much time to relax. Then, a young she-cat, Goldenkit, was called forward. Smiling, Nectarflower fixed her attention on the ceremony. A celebration was exactly what the clan needed - what she needed - to take her mind off of things.
Once Goldenkit hurried to the center of the gathered cats, Smallstar continued. Nectarflower scanned the clearing for a moment, wondering who Goldenkit's mentor would be. Not Tigerdance, surely. The poor tom already had plenty of young cats to take care of as it was. The last name she expected to hear, however, was her own. Shocked, the warrior sprang to her paws before belatedly remembering to lift her voice in tandem with her clanmates', acknowledging Goldenpaw's new title.
Smiling uncertainly at Sootstorm, Nectarflower found her bearings and padded toward the young apprentice, schooling her expression into a calmer, more friendly one. The familiar sight of Tallpaw at Goldenpaw's side calmed her nerves somewhat and she meowed a quiet greeting to him before fixing her attention on her new apprentice. "Congratulations, Goldenpaw." She meowed warmly. "We'll begin training tomorrow morning. For now, just take some time to pick out a nest and get acquainted with the other apprentices." She turned to leave, then paused. "Oh. And don't stay up too late, yeah? I'm teaching you how to hunt in the morning."
