This season's harshness was already beginning to take a toll on the clan and every day Curlyfluff prayed for his clanmate's safety. It hurt him to see every-cat's ribs begin to show, to hear kits crying about why they can't have more milk, or hearing about yet another cat succumbing to some sort of sickness... it was all so disheartening. He himself had just recently bounced back from his illness and while he'd been out hunting as much as possible, he wished he could do more for everyone.

Sitting alone near the edge of camp and lost in his thoughts for who knew how long, the curly-coated tom failed to hear approaching pawsteps...

Empty bellies had become common recently, and while most seemed to be dealing with it just fine Softpaw was not one of those cats. Sneaking extra meals from the fresh-kill pile and bites of prey on hunting patrols hadn't done much to ease the gnawing at her belly, especially when the prey she consumed was barely meatier than one of her legs. No matter how creative she got at sneaking meals it never felt enough.

The young molly wandered through camp on weak paws, mumbling a few curses she had overheard from her days in the nursery. Why was she forced to give up her prey to the elders? They weren't long for this world anyway, and yet they drained the fresh-kill pile in a selfish pursuit of clinging to their own lives. The dizziness brought on by the lack of food had finally grown too great for the apprentice. With an angry huff the molly flopped onto a patch of oddly colored, yet squishy moss.
