Felix had never been a housecat.

He had grown up practically alone, learning what he could fight and what he could not, and knowing when to run and choose and pick his battles. He had not let that define him nor control him. He had defined himself as a wanderer. One who traveled. One who saw. And so he had traveled the world--so far and far and far away that he no longer even knew the original direction that he had come from. He had never let himself be tethered to anything. Even the few friends he had, he simply visited on occasion. They were always glad to see him, but he never felt the need to stay.

Never until now.

Icy blue eyes haunted him every time he attempted to dream. No matter how longingly he looked over the horizon, his paws never broke free to begin their own journey. Whether it was because of the fact that his own blood lingered in this forest--his own kits--or just because he knew that she was here, he was uncertain. A combination of both, perhaps. But it was battling with his nature. It was beginning to make him sick. Felix the wanderer did not stay. He did not linger, waiting around like some house-trained dog for his master to return. He was firmly owned by himself. So why was it that he was languishing on the outskirts of this StarClan forgive us forest like a lost shadow?

"I could. I could, Perch."

The dark-furred tom let out a frustrated sigh, casting his eyes around to find some kind of distraction. There--a rabbit. He'd never caught a rabbit before. What was one doing so far from its moorland home? This was the outskirts of the river territory, not the abandoned barn where he'd seen hares darting among the dried grasses. Either way... an interesting challenge. Something to take his mind away from his semi-trapped state. Felix dropped into his hunting crouch, becoming perfectly still. He was a shadow. He was not visible to the skittish mind of his prey, which was simply darting across the border as if it had been running from something. Well, whatever it had been running from was no matter, so long as it ran straight into his paws. Once the scrap of grey fur sprinted close enough, the loner seized the moment and pounced, putting all the power into his front paws and outstretched claws. However, it ran neatly between his paws, and under him as he leapt.

Felix glanced after it as it ran away, far too quick to attempt a chase. His frustration was limited to a simple lash of his tail. Of course, he couldn't expect to catch such swift prey without any training of the sort. It was far too different than the rats and mice he was used to. But still... still, it might have rejuvenated his confidence in himself.

Since when did his confidence need rejuvenating? What on earth was wrong with him?

With a huff, he sat down, trying to wrangle the bitter feeling that was making his stomach churn.

Felix attempted to catch a rabbit. Rolling... Failure. -3 SP

Egretswoop
“I can see much from the clouds above.”

The forest had been much, much too loud as of late. Cracks of strange thunder exploding only in the night, near-yet-far enough to only ever rouse those most sensitive to sound. She, in particular, had been hit the worst by it. Night come and night go, she found herself troubled, unable to sleep. She wished for it to end, but the several-day stint seemed to make it never cease. Prompting other clanmates as to whether or not they heard it too had been a dead end, and ultimately, the sleepless molly had to escape. Everything had been too loud. Her senses could never stay still for even a heartbeat anymore. Ears always on a swivel, whiskers always twitching. Maw clamped shut in some desperate attempt to rid her nose of that underlying sting that had come along with the cracks in the sky, the one that stunk of twoleg and monster and wrong.

Keeping her apprentices with their training had its difficulty increased ten-fold with her lack of sleep. It had gotten to a point that, teeming on the edge of a total shut-down, she had no other choice than to allow them the day off. Word of a small tournament held by Perchstar had her encouraging her apprentices to do their best, before allowing them to do what they wished. She needed the time away. Time to recenter herself, time to figure out how to deal with all of the sounds and smells and noises--

It practically felt like screeching in her ears as a bird chittered its song. Even with the vulpine blanket she kept around her, it hardly funneled the sounds of the outside world for her anymore. Her senses had simply gotten keener. Sharper. Flattening her ears against her head, she still could hear it nigh-on screaming. Following its sound, the warrior knew her obligation to duty meant she had to at least provide for her clan in some manner. Wandering the forest alone was scarcely permitted beneath Perchstar as it was, but she had followed a familiar path. A path that always brought her to the most tender moment between herself and her adopted mother, where she had earned her pelt and felt truly worthy of her asylum name. The time of cats that had truly known what her mother's past had meant was now fading, and it meant it was up to her to be able to pass on that legacy. Whatever reminders history could provide to prevent its repetition of trauma.

None of that mattered as the chirping of that bird demolished every coherent thought in her mind. She had to hunt it down, now. It was practically begging to be caught. Her senses led her towards the branches of a tree, in which one glance up allowed her honeyed gaze to directly target the root of her anxieties. Flutter down, noisy one... Her tail flicked with the need to take it down. She was no Skyclan cat, but her body had been built with origins not truly of the river.

She'd take the risk.

Climbing the trunk with much-louder claws than should have happened, the thick branch had allowed her to coil up. Ready to strike. The second it chirped again- thud. It was silenced, the feline having used the base of the tree to dart forward, and then land on the ground below. If that was how Skyclan hunted, she now understood just why they had such strong legs. But her world was now just that much quieter, allowing her the silence and kindness that came from that sensory input no longer barraging her.

It wasn't much longer before she spotted a dark pelt. Strange, yet familiar. Eyes of glistening amber seemed to pierce through the shadow of her pelt, scanning whether or not to deem them friend or foe. For once, she parted her maw, wincing as she was met with just how thick the forest was scented. But she filtered through it all. Sorted each individual message out, only to find... Foe? She could not quite decide. His scent was too muddied of the clans-all four of them, as if he had been staying at Fourtrees-but had the distinct sharpness of one not from here. She would appear. As she approached, the rustling of leaves snapped her head, and she watched as the catch skittered off. Failed catch. Her senses told her.

Silently, she glided among the foliage, closer towards that Twolegplace building that held no clan's claim. Once close enough, she dropped her prey, nudging it forward. The word outsider hissed within her mind, and perhaps it had given her reason for sympathy. As a cat who had been adopted into the Clan, she had access to food. If she could not hunt, there always would be a meal waiting for her at camp. She would consistently be fed. But a cat who truly lived on the outside? It took minimal mental strain to acknowledge it would be much more difficult, even in Greenleaf where she could hear the multiple rodents chittering among the boards. "For you." Egretswoop called out, announcing her presence if it had gone unnoticed up until this point.

She was still adorned in her fox pelt, looking significantly more vulpine than feline. Her mother's pelt work had been nothing short of extraordinary to allow her such a disguise. But beneath... there was no mistaking the soft alabaster fur, or the gentleness in her honey-kissed gaze. Hopefully, he saw through that pelt, instead of focusing on the outside.

Felix's moment of questioning himself was rudely interrupted by the whispering of leaves in a nearby tree. A vague irritation caused him to glance up, but that was turned to a sudden stab of panic when he saw a fox sitting at the tree's base, glaring eerily at him. How did a fox get so close without him noticing--? No, wait. Those were not the eyes of a fox. Honey-gold and calculating, they stared down and met his own gaze, which turned from shock to inquisitiveness in a simple blink. There was a cat under there. A cat, wearing the pelt of a fox, with a feathered bird hanging from its jaws. The practical menagerie would have been laughable if the sight was not so strange and striking. The loner found himself silent as he looked upwards, searching through the various trunks and branches to see if he could get any other hint of this specter before it vanished. And vanish it did--but not upwards. Downwards. And within a moment, it was in his sight again.

As the fox-cat-bird approached through the shade of the leaves, its features became more clear. Wispy, pale fur, almost like a cloud beneath the pelt of the fox, which was obviously long-dead by the way it draped across the cat's shoulders. Eyes of a pale amber were inscrutable as they searched his face. The bird had been caught as prey, most likely. For some reason it was dropped right in front of him. Felix blinked down at it before looking back up at its source. A quiet voice identified the figure as female. It also identified the bird as... for him? Had she seen his abysmal attempt to catch the rabbit? Ah. How embarrassing. Sympathy from a fox-slayer. He had not expected the voice to be so light, nor the face of the cat to hold such a benign, but curious, aura.

Well, color me intrigued. The dark-furred wanderer nodded at the fox-wearing she-cat. "I thank you," he said. He kept his tone pleasant, despite the peculiarity that prodded at his mind. This cat was on the River border, yet caught a bird in the branches like one of the Sky cats. And they had never given him prey before. He had been under the impression that outsiders were not allowed to take prey from the forest. To show his appreciation, he took a small bite of the bird, feathers and all. He'd had pigeons from gardens sometimes, but rarely a wild bird. It tasted gamey... but nice. Felix looked up after he had finished his mouthful. Yes--the cat was still there. Closer, even. Satin fur and glowing eyes regarded him. Undeniably, this she-cat was a beauty. Her coloring gave the appearance of a halo. But why wear the fierce covering of a fox, then? "Why hide in the pelt of a feared predator?" he inquired of her, offering a slow blink to show he had no untoward intentions. "If you wished to converse, then perhaps you might wish to do so on common ground. I personally would prefer to see the face of my benefactor without such obfuscation." Besides, the face of the fox compounded on that of the feline unnerved him somewhat. But he should not let her know that; he would not want to offend. "I promise not to bite."

Egretswoop
“I can see much from the clouds above.”

She regaled him with a careful curiosity. Every movement that he made, his reactions, all taken in. The onyx-based pelt, bleached to end in gentle browns from moons of being out in the sun gave him a uniquely muddied look, one that she found particularly intriguing. Not many black-pelted cats existed in Riverclan, so she had yet to truly be able to study the unique effects of the sun on a pelt. Perhaps whatever patches of black still existed on her fox pelt would one day bleach to a similar hue, only further illuminating the wearer beneath. She herself had stilled, aside from the feathered flick of a tail in approval when he took her gift. The warrior hadn't expected him to take it so willingly, truthfully expecting more of a fight.

Then came his question. They always wondered. It was a unique tradition, one passed down from mother to daughter. A gift that had linked her to the hare-wearer in a special way, as if to make up for the fact that they didn't truthfully share blood. Nevertheless, Harebounce had been much more of a motherly figure to her than her birth-giver ever had been. That deep feeling of abandon still eddied at her psyche some days, particularly when the forest felt loud. All too loud, on days like this. Sitting up a little bit straighter, the fox-cloaked feline tilted her head just slightly as she pondered her answer. "Why lurk on the river's edge when you know who it calls to most?" She prompted in return. His gesture of good faith was not lost on her, that rich gaze of true ember hiding away for long enough to signal he wasn't there to strike her down. Nor would she be, as she returned the slow blink, before a giggle escaped her in response. It was a light sound, one of unbridled joy that seemed as if it sounded off far too rarely. His promise not to bite was particularly amusing to her, given that he had just done that exact action to the food she'd offered him. Nevertheless, she found that comment bringing him some affinity. Rarely did those outside of her Clan find it acceptable to jest with her.

With a graceful dip of her head, the structured face of the pelt that often covered her face instead fell to rest atop the nape of her neck. The rest of the cloak stayed about her, the comforting blanket-like feel one that she couldn't shed in good faith unless she were to swim. It revealed pure alabaster fur, the feathered texture wistfully laying in such a way that gave the appearance of the most plush of clouds. For while it was the appearance of a fierce predator she adorned herself with, what lurked beneath may as well have been the visage of complete innocence. Though she had seen herself in the midst of battle, there were no scars to litter her pelt. No, the only feature to disturb her otherwise pale fur was the gentlest of cream markings atop her forehead, only made visible by a carefully-studying eye. "Consider your luck strong, for not many of my clanmates even get to see my face." Egretswoop commented. A gentle breeze swirled between the two of them, causing her ears to twitch in its direction for just a moment before they swiveled back to focus upon the tom.

"What may I call you, stranger?" Her sweet tone prompted. After all, this wasn't a typical encounter. She was a keeper of many facts and information, details and secrets that otherwise went unnoticed. Her memory flicked to a time she had gone out with Mistwalker, back then having not yet earned her full name, and the stories she shared of having encountered someone at the border. Egretswoop had not pushed at that time, understanding that it would have been an easy way to get the apprentice in trouble, and she sought not to cause any trouble for the leader's daughter. But now? Curiosity was free to tug at her paws. Was this the same face that the clan princess had once met? "As I am a face of two pelts, I am also a face of two names. Egretswoop, or Milk, should you take a preference."

Had she ever shared her Asylum name with another cat? No, she supposed she had not. But given that this was a tom who more likely than not failed to align himself with the naming conventions of the forest, she found it would place them on more even terrain. He was a peculiarity in her world of normal patterns, and she sought to figure out how he fit into the grander puzzle of life.

Responding to a question with a question. Delightful. Rarely had Felix had such interesting conversation... let alone with such a fascinating stranger. He found himself compelled to honesty--honesty that he had hardly even allowed himself to contemplate. "I wait here precisely because I know to whom it calls." He knew who made this place their home. He knew her face, the stark blue eyes that haunted his every waking moment, and he knew that his own flesh and blood were just beyond his reach over the river. Those details were not ones he needed to share. However, the answer was true enough. That was why he waited. It was why he had not yet vanished over the mountains, or to his normal summer home of the beach to look over glittering green seas, or even to shaded valleys where he could escape the season's heat. It was why he lingered phantomlike at this empty old farmland. But... perhaps his time had not been a waste, at least not today. Not if he could have such an intriguing exchange.

And it grew even moreso, because after the question had been asked, an unfamiliar sound rustled upward from the angel-fox. A laugh. No, a giggle. Coming from one so stoic, it seemed like a blessing. Like a ray of light breaking through clouds. Scintillating. Accompanying the unexpected burst of gentle joy was another gesture of good faith. The heavens opened, and a soft white mist was unsheathed from its previous covering of coarse orange fox-fur. Shining satin wreathed the amber gaze, emitting sunlike from a delicately pointed face. Uniform in color but for a pale marking buried beneath light fur on her forehead. Compared to the darkness of his immaculately groomed pelt, she seemed softer than a pillow, lighter than snow on mountain peaks. For a moment he simply sat there, stunned, blinking in her radiance. Starstruck. He hadn't been this blown away by a cat since--

No. Stop it. This molly isn't Perch, and it's not her fault.

At the same moment that he snapped out of the brief trance, the fox-angel spoke again. Asking for his name... and giving her own preemptively. Another extension of trust. Two names, also. Not just one. Fitting, as she mentioned, for a cat of two pelts. Egret Swoop--obviously a wild cat name--and Milk. He couldn't stop himself from blinking slowly again at that one. What a normal name for a forest cat to have. Had she once, perhaps, been of the town? Like him? Had she been like Fox Trot, who said he had joined as a kitten? Why then keep her old name? This cat seemed to be raising more and more questions. But he liked that in a conversation partner.

The bird was almost completely forgotten now. Felix arranged himself into a better sitting position from which to conduct the exchange of information. His long-furred tail waved once behind him. It was strange how their pelt colors almost directly contrasted each other--hers all cream and starlight, his a deep color of night struck with gleams of brown. And yet, both light pairs of eyes met, amber and gold, with a modicum of respect. A recognition of similarity. An acquiescence. His brilliant aureate gaze fairly sparkled as he looked at her. "Milk... yes, it suits you. I believe I shall call you that." Of course, both names suited her. He had seen egrets once before, when visiting a wide marsh lake that had held all manner of birds. The grace and poise was perfect for her. And yet, he liked the simplicity of Milk. It sounded more honest, more familiar. It still carried the same color of her pelt and the same way that her movements flowed, but it seemed like a deeper, more intrinsic part of her. It was kind of her to grant him that name.

He smiled, which made his already handsome face light up with a white flash of his teeth. But it was not a threatening smile like the ones he'd often used, nor a fake-charm smile that kept many others at a distance. A genuine smile. "I? You may call me Felix. I regret that I have only the one name, but it has served me well throughout the years." Another slow blink. Another gentle wave of his soft tail. "I consider my luck well indeed, to have been blessed with the visage of an angel like yourself. You are truly an enigma. Milk, you seem to me both the wildest of the forest cats I have ever met, and also the most like a cat who would fit into the wide world of a wanderer. It makes me wonder about you, about your life... but I would not be so rude as to pry when we have hardly even gotten to know each other." The bird had not been quite forgotten, after all. An ink-black paw reached out to nudge it back between them, now that they sat slightly closer. "Would you care to dine with me? I would be remiss if I accepted such a gift and simply ate it without offering you any of your own spoils. The hunt was yours--and though the generosity was also, I wish to share."
