It was blisteringly hot today and Silentkit was not for it. Thankfully, her coat wasn't terribly long, and her fur was white, but regardless, she felt like she was going to melt. Even resting in the shade, sprawled out like a fish didn't save her from roasting in the heat. Perhaps, the only saving grace being the bubbling river only a few tail-lengths away. It looked so cool and refreshing...
Though, anytime she tried to put even a single paw in the river, some cat always got in the way and stopped her. To this day, Silentkit still wasn't sure why she wasn't allowed in the river. Plenty of other cats swam in the river and they didn't seem to have any problems with it at all.
The small, white kit looked over at the river wistfully, wishing she could spend even a few minutes in the water to cool off a little. Then, movement caught her eye. It was a huge fish! And it had just gobbled up that smaller fish like it was nothing! Then, it struck her. The older cats were keeping her away from the river out of spite - it was for her safety! Yeah, that made perfect sense!
They didn't want her to get gobbled up like the little fish, so they wanted to keep her out of the water! Yes! That must be it! So...maybe, if she got a grown cat to watch her, they wouldn't mind letting her swim for a bit to cool off.
With a soft churr of excitement, Silentkit hopped to her paws and trotted across the camp, blue eyes wide with joy. She needed to find a cat to accompany her! Someone who looked nice, someone...oh! There! A gray and white she-cat caught Silentkit's eye and she raced toward her, tail raised in a friendly manner.

Bubblepaw had come to realize that she had a love-hate relationship with the heat. She enjoyed the days when it was just hot enough to warm her pelt and let her sunbathe to regain energy before it was time to train or go out on a patrol. The heat like today was heavy and merciless, and it only made the she-cat feel drowsy. She had debated going over to Sunningrocks at this time of day, but she barely wanted to move a single paw with this sun beating down on her. She couldn't wait for the coolness of the evening to finally arrive.
She sighed lazily as she laid down and silently prayed for the sun to set quicker than it had yesterday. That was when she noticed a small kit running in her direction. Bubblepaw quickly lifted her head from her paws and put on a welcoming smile as the white kit came over.
"Hi, there!" She purred, continuing to lay down in order to match the height of this tiny newcomer, "What brings you over here, little one?"

Silentkit smiled brightly when the older she-cat noticed her and did her best to replicate the odd ways of her family. She wasn't sure how to communicate effectively, but surely it couldnt be too hard, right? She scanned the other cat for any clues to help explain what her mouth movements meant, but no luck.
Ah, well, she'd just have to make up her own form of communication then! So, the little white kit trotted to the side of the other cat's head and pushed her body weight against the she-cat's face until they were both looking at the river. It looked so cool and refreshing, right!? Didn't she just wanna jump in!?
The medium-furred kit did her best to mimic swimming movements before turning her bright blue gaze back the the she-cat imploringly. Please oh please understand! She wanted nothing more than to be allowed to swim!
This cat was a bit smaller than the others, though. Maybe she wasn't fully grown yet either? Silentkit examined Silentkit she-cat, her nose wrinkled. Was that a good thing, or a bad thing? Maybe she would be more willing to play in the river since she was younger. Or, alternatively, she might shoo her away like an obnoxious fly.

Bubblepaw was a bit confused at first. The kit wasn't talking, but she was sure that there was a plethora of reasons as to why that was the case. Perhaps she was deaf, or perhaps she was just shy. Either way, Bubblepaw wanted to help make the kit's day. She blinked as her head was pushed toward the river, and then she glanced back down at Silentkit as she made swimming movements.
Ah, Silentkit wanted to go swimming. She understood now. Bubblepaw took a heartbeat to think about how she should answer. RiverClan kits were usually taught to swim at the broken pools instead of the water that surrounded camp typically because it was safer, but the she-cat supposed that it would be fine as long as the kit had close supervision. Besides, every RiverClan kit had to learn eventually.
Bubblepaw gave Silentkit a happy nod before rising to her paws and flicking her tail to indicate that the she-kit should follow her. The apprentice padded over to the riverbank and looked over her shoulder to make sure that her new little companion had joined her. She waded into the river until her paws were treading water, and she nodded her head to let Silentkit know that it was alright to join her. As long as she stayed near the kit, Bubblepaw would feel alright about this.

Silentkit watched with bated breath as the older she-cat seemed to puzzle out what she was trying to get across. The moment understanding dawned over the she-cat's face, Silentkit lashed her tail, overjoyed to have been understood. She really was getting the hang of this communication stuff! However, there was still the issue of actually being allowed to swim.
Then, a nod! Silentkit could feel her heart nearly burst with happiness! She bounded after the apprentice, her tail held high and a purr vibrating in her chest. Was this really all she had to do this whole time? She just needed to ask for permission and then she would have been allowed to swim to her heart's content? Looking back, it seemed silly that she hadn't realized it sooner.
Whatever the case, Silentkit was just glad that this she-cat was willing to show her how to swim safely. They reached the pebbly bank of the river and Silentkit looked up at her guardian, her bright blue eyes wide with amazement as she took a few steps into the river. Though the other she-cat was taller, it was still so cool to see her standing so effortlessly in the shallow edge of the river!
Without hesitation, the white kit padded forward and slapped her front paws into the cool water, splashing water every which way. She let out an involuntary trill of amusement as little droplets of water dripped from her whiskers. This was so much fun and she hadn't even gotten all the way in yet!

Bubblepaw laughed as Silentkit expressed her delight. She kept her yellow eyes on the kit as she stayed near the water's edge. The river around camp wasn't too deep, but she knew that she was taller than a kit, and she didn't want any mistakes to happen with Silentkit under her care for the time being. Bubblepaw smiled brightly and flicked her tail forward to let the kit know that it was alright to come in a little deeper. She was ready to grab her scruff and pull her up and out if anything bad happened.
She enjoyed being with kits. Their sense of wonder and amazement made the apprentice very happy. So many cats were far too serious nowadays, so it was nice to be around cats who simply wanted to have a good time. It was impossible to dislike kits. They were such vulnerable beings in a world that was so dangerous.

Silentkit looked up at Bubblepaw, eyes wide with amazement as the other she-cat beckoned her forward. She could go further into the water? Bubblepaw wasn't going to stop her or pull her back from her scruff like the other older cats? She hesitated for a moment before grinning at Bubblepaw, tail high.
With a little chirp of excitement, the little white kit treaded further into the river, face bright with joy. As she waded further out, Silentkit rolled the river stones under her paws, enjoying the cool water running through her fur and the teensy little bugs that flitted over the surface of the water.
How did they stand on the water like that without falling? Was it because they were so little? Silentkit lowered her head until her chin touched the water and stared at one of the bugs until it skittered out of her reach. Huffing with disappointment, she turned back to Bubblepaw, a suddenly mischievous expression on her face.
Tail puffed up, Silentkit raised a paw and slapped it across the surface of the river, sending an arch of water right into Bubblepaw's face. Droplets ran down the older she-cat's whiskers, sending Silentkit into a fit of hysterical churrs of laughter.
The apprentice looked so silly all soggy and surprised like that!

Bubblepaw blinked in shock as Silentkit flicked some water her way. A quick laugh escaped her maw before she gently used the tip of her paw to flick some droplets back toward the kit in front of her. She hesitated for a moment, wanting to let Silentkit know that she was a great swimmer but not knowing how. There had to be some sort of way to communicate with her easier, whether it was through paw movements or tail movements or anything of the sort. She glanced down at the stones and shells on the ground below her paws. The shells shimmered from the light hitting the water, and the stones gleamed as if they had fallen right from the sun. She used her nose to point downward, signaling for Silentkit to look at the spectacle. Surely any cat would find it beautiful.
