Unfriendly Birds [Dawnfeather/Silverwing]

Graywind kept pace with Silverwing and Dawnfeather as the trio headed toward the creek. What a goose was doing on Skyclan territory she really wasn't sure of, but a patrol earlier in the day had spotted it and reported back to camp. Wolfblossom had sent the trio of warriors to take care of it, and Graywind wasn't particularly upset about the chance to use the battle skills she had trained for. She didn't know Dawnfeather or Silverwing particularly well, but they seemed like decent cats to have on her side in this.

"It has to be close," Graywind mewed to her patrolmates. As if on cue, a loud honk could be heard... And it indeed sounded quite close.

“-and then I jumped on it! Like this! Swipe swipe! Feathers everywhere! And then Foxtrot trounced his, and they all flapped off! Geese are scary, you know; they have teeth on their tongues. If that’s not a creature straight from the Dark Forest, I don’t know what is; erm, not that everything in the Dark Forest is bad? I think? Have you either hunted a goose before? I- oh! You’re probably right, dear,” Dawnfeather finished, cut ear flicking at the conclusion of her story. Those were the days, Beetle beside her with his long pelt brushing hers.

At the sound of the honk, Dawnfeather froze, tail-tip twitching, before effortlessly leaping up onto a low-hanging branch to get a bird’s-eye view. Her sharp claws latched onto the bark, keen eyes scanning for any sign of white. If the goose did spot her and attack, she was confident in her ability to dodge, as long as she was in the trees.

"They have teeth on their tongues?" Silverwing meowed skeptically. Of the two times she had fought geese the molly hadn't payed any attention towards its tongue. Truth be told she thought they didn't have tongues, the insides of their beaks were just hollow in her mind. Until now. "Stars, that does sound like it comes from the Dark Forest."

A honk announced the end of their conversation. Dawnfeather mounted a branch, leaving Silverwing woth Graywind on the ground. The silver she-cat focused on the direction the honk had come from, crouching low as she waited either for the order to attack or for the goose to show itself.

"It does," Graywind echoed her agreement with Silverwing to Dawnfeather's claims. She'd never fought a goose before, but everything she had heard about them just sounded like they were mean beasts. She'd find out whether Dawnfeather's claims were simple exaggerations or not today, she supposed.

Dawnfeather leaped into a tree, and the goose burst through the foliage, clearly agitated to have the Skyclanners so close to it. It surged forward, pecking at whatever it could reach with an oversized, ugly beak. With a hiss, Graywind darted forward, slashing at the goose with unsheathed claws. Silverwing hadn't been a clanmate of hers for long, but she wasn't going to just sit there and let the goose peck at her, either.

Goose used Beaked Thrust on Silverwing for -15 sp, dealing -10 damage.

A blur of white feathers shot out of the undergrowth, and Dawnfeather surged down from the foliage, knocking the goose aside with her bodyweight and hissing in pain as the bird’s edged beak slashed across her shoulder. Her younger Clanmate was safe; that was all that mattered at the moment as Dawnfeather rolled across the leaf-covered ground, leaping to her paws and jumping back as the goose pecked at open air. Hopefully Silverwing was alright.

“Are you both alright?” She called, ignoring the throbbing pain in her shoulder. She’d had worse; it would subside soon enough. “We’ll have this bird on the fresh-kill pile in no time!”

Dawnfeather used Blocking Leap, transferring the 10 damage to herself and costing 5 stamina. Goose is now focused on Dawnfeather.

The silver molly prepared herself to counter the goose, unsheathed claws ready to swipe at its face just as Dawnfeather leapt in to take the blow. If she wasn't so focused on their enemy Silverwing might have been upset with Dawnfeather. How could such a beautiful cat be so selfless? It just wasn't fair! Silverwing would have to figure out a way to repay the kind molly later. "I'm fine, thank you Dawnfeather!"

This goose on the other paw would not be. Even if unintentional, it had dared to touch the wonderful Dawnfeather. She'd crush its throat and slice its belly open! It would regret ever touching Dawnfeather! Following up with her inner thoughts, Silverwing rushed to the feathered beast and clamped her teeth down on the base of its neck.

Graywind's eyes widened as a golden blur leaped in front of Silverwing, a soft gasp at Dawnfeather's speed in blocking the blows from the goose. There was something like admiration in her eyes as she watched Silverwing quickly dart in after affirming she was okay, and then Graywind remembered that she too was part of this. She forced herself forward, sinking her claws into a somehow delicate yet sturdy wing.

Graywind used Snap for -7 sp, dealing -8 damage.

Dawnfeather let out a soft sigh as the other two called out that they were alright. Good. Now that the goose was no longer taking them by surprise, she was confident in the SkyClanners’ ability to slay the beast and take it back to camp to serve as bedding for their nests and food for their apprentices. This was practice more than anything at this point; and so the golden molly surged forwards, batting aside the goose’s wing and sinking her sharp deadly claws deep into the goose’s down. Rip; tear; with a small grunt, Dawnfeather tore deep into the animal’s stomach until it pulled away, noisily crying out.

She leaped back before it could retaliate, golden paws stained a deep crimson. This was prey, after all; she would have no mercy for a mindless beast. It would be happier in its own stars, she was sure.

Dawnfetaher used Belly Rake; success! Dealt 20 damage and cost 25 stamina.

The goose was weakening quickly, angry shrieks and honks giving way to more desperate ones. As Silverwing followed up with another blow, Graywind darted forward, sinking her fangs into the beast's neck. Better to put it out of its' misery now than let it suffer any longer. She kept her hold until the goose finally stopped thrashing, then stepped back.

"Are you two alright?" She asked, glancing between Silverwing and Dawnfeather. The senior warrior had taken the blow for Silverwing, but still she'd ask them both.
