Once his sibling’s ceremony was finished, celebrations were complete, and the new apprentice had met their mentor, Poppyshine returned to the Willow Branch to call yet another meeting. More than just one kit was making it to the apprentice den, and she knew that they would take relief in knowing they were not changing dens alone. She smiled and called out, ”Let all cats old enough to catch their own fish gather for a Clan meeting!”
Larkkit had not moved from where he sat celebrating his sibling’s new name. He knew that he was ready too, and was expecting his ceremony next. When he met eyes with the deputy and her tail flicked to indicate to him, he quickly stepped up to the right spot. He sat tall and his eyes scanned the warriors that were present. He already knew who his sibling’s mentor was…but who would be his?
”Larkkit,” Poppyshine began with a smile, “you have reached the age of six moons. It is now time for you to be apprenticed.” She had taken a long time to figure out who should be Larkkit’s mentor. Unlike his sibling, Larkkit was not as sociable as other cats. She had not had the chance to speak with him personally due to her busy schedule as deputy, and then acting as temporary leader for the past moon. She was not sure if he was anti-social due to being shy, or something else. But regardless of the reason, she knew a cat who was very skilled when it came to talking with others, and had enough confidence to coax Larkkit out of his shell. And, she hoped that it would benefit this particular warrior as much as he had benefited his own mentor when he was Larkkit’s age. “From this day forward, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Larkpaw. Your mentor will be Rowansong. May his energy and charm show you the warrior’s path before you.”
Larkpaw blinked. He looked up at Poppyshine for a moment and then back at the warriors. Rowansong? He had heard the name…Poppyshine’s son. From the little he had seen…well. He was not impressed. He didn’t know who would have impressed him, but immediately the excitement about being an apprentice deflated out of him. Energy and charm? Who cared about that for a warrior? He wanted someone powerful and experienced and smart and who had done something. He had not heard anything exciting about this Rowansong. Larkkit huffed and waited for his new mentor to step forth.
Rowansong had already been called to attention from the last ceremony, cheering along as one of the oldest kits stiffly went through with their ceremony. He’d remained in place, watching quietly when Poppyshine lingered near the Willow Branch, eventually resuming her place upon it. Another apprentice ceremony; fitting, for twins. Rowansong watched as Larkkit stepped into place, head tilting. The pair of new apprentices were… odd, if their general disposition was anything to go off.
His whiskers twitched when Poppyshine called out his name. He’d only just been given Egretpaw! But paws were short, and he was exceeding in energy and charm. Rowansong rose from the crowd, padding closer to newly-named Larkpaw, who looked less happy now that Rowansong was closer. It paused him enough he forgot entirely about touching noses. Shaking himself out, Rowansong tilted his head to the side and, grinning, purred, “Pleased to meet you, Larkpaw! I am sure we can make a fine warrior of you, some day. I will be awaiting the dawn with expectancy.”
