A Bright New Sunrise [Closed]

Subject: A Bright New Sunrise [Closed] Sun Feb 26, 2023 8:20 pm

Acornpaw sat at the entrance of the camp, ears perked and gaze scanning across the camp as she waited to spot Briarrose step from the warrior's den. With the return of their long-missing Clanmates, she had held out hope that Sunstrike would return...But a pawful of sunrises had past and there was still no sign of the warrior and...Well, she had to come to terms with the fact that she had neglected her training long enough. She had thought about asking Mottlestar to assign her a new mentor but...Well, she hadn't managed the courage for that - but asking a warrior like Briarrose...A warrior she had not-so secretly looked up to since meeting her as a kit... Well, that was something she had much more courage for. Just...Needed to wait for the warrior - and hope the warrior was up for it. ...She would likely be up for it, she was always so kind! It was charming and... A wistful sigh escaped from Acornpaw, now becoming very distracted with her own thoughts.

It had taken some time to get used to, but the scars StarClan zapped across Firepaw's face were here to stay. Mottlestar had allowed her to visit the Moonstone, but otherwise, Firepaw was on probation. Banned from becoming a warrior until most of her peers had their own warrior ceremonies.

Her green eyes wandered the camp, bored out of her mind, until they landed on Acornpaw. She padded up to the brown furred apprentice. "Where are we going?" She said this in a way that indicated that she was inviting herself to whatever outing Acornpaw was having.

❖ It was finally finished. Briarrose had replaced all the moss in the warrior's den. It had taken her quite a while but she had been itching to do it for some time and finally indulged her odd urges. Earlier that morning, the torbie molly had—as gently as she could—booted the remaining warriors from the den with the promise of well-made nests and extra moss to cushion the ground in time to sleep. She worked hard to gather what she needed and worked even harder to complete her task in a timely manner. It made her happy that everything was ready before much of the day could go by. She could thank her diligent nature for that. ღ

❖ As she stepped out of the den, her eyes roamed around the clearing. Half of her clanmates were busy around the camp and she assumed the other half were out on patrols. A warm, giddy feeling spread throughout her. Thunderclan was whole again! Her missing clanmates had returned. Sage-green eyes stopped on a particular pelt sitting by the camp entrance and her heart lurched. Well, most of her clanmates had returned. Sunstrike was one of the very few that had not... Acornpaw's training had stagnated due to her missing mentor. Sure, the clan (or what few warriors were present at the time) had tried to help with the she-cat's training but it was never the same as having an actual mentor. Briarrose knew how it felt. Her father had been selected as her mentor but not long into her apprenticeship, he had fallen ill and had to step down from his leadership position as well as his role as a mentor. The routine she had developed for training had fallen apart and she was left to make do with being passed from one clanmate to another. Everyone had different teaching styles and sometimes, she was left confused and irritated (mostly with herself) by the end of it. Looking at the lone figure sitting by the entrance brought back memories and she wasn't sure how to feel about them anymore. The past was in the past and she should keep looking forward... ღ

❖ Sighing softly, the tortoiseshell warrior began heading over to Acornpaw, the need to ask who or what she was waiting on. However, another figure arrived at the area and settled down. It was one of her younger siblings, Firepaw. The young she-cat was still serving (and will continue to serve it for the foreseeable future) her punishment after the fiasco at the Gathering. The scars left on her face would forever be a reminder of that night. It saddened Briarrose but Firepaw seemed to be trudging on well enough. Shaking away her thoughts, she continued her walk over. She wondered if it was a patrol. Or perhaps it was an apprentice training session? She would find out soon enough. ღ

❖ Smiling gently, she greeted the two young cats with a brief, respectful nod of her head before speaking, "Hello, Acornpaw, Firepaw. Are you both waiting for someone? I could go inform them that you are ready for whatever activity there is planned for you both." She flicked an ear as she waited on their response. She wasn't sure how long Acornpaw had been there waiting but Firepaw had arrived as recently as Briar had, at least, it's what she assumed. "If you do not mind me asking, what is it that you will be doing?" Her curiosity had won over her patience and she had to ask. ღ

Acornpaw jumped as Firepaw suddenly spoke up, gazing snapping down to stare at her denmate in surprise and shock - having completely missed her approaching. She blinked a few times for the words to sink in, mouth opening in surprise. She...Wanted to come with? Was that even smart? Her eyes fell toward Firepaw's scars, heart twisting up at the sight of it - having recalled the shocking night where the Clan returned much sooner than normal for a Gathering...And bringing the badly injured Firepaw with them.

"Well-" she started, but approaching pawsteps caused her voice to die as she turned and saw Briarrose stepping up. Her voice was stuck in her throat for a few heartbeats as she tried to find the words to answer, a sheepish smile crossing her face. "Well...Actually I was hoping I could talk to you!" she said, shifting her weight on her paws. "I...Well, I need to work on my training and was hoping to go hunting - but I know that I'm not allowed out of the camp on my own so I-" She paused there, glancing over at Firepaw for a second before she turned back to the warrior.

"We were hoping that maybe you would be willing to join us? We don't have to go far from the camp or anything! Just...I want to help get more fresh-kill for our returning cats..."

The russet apprentice could feel the hesitation in Acornpaw's amber gaze as they wandered to her scar. She couldn't blame her, though. To ThunderClan, she probably looked like a liability now. A troublemaker. Bad company.

"Look, if you don't want tagging me along-" Before she could finished, Briarrose spoke up, scaring Firepaw this time and making her fur bristle. Acornpaw seemed far too eager to answer to Briarrose, though. The look an her face reminded Firepaw of when Curlypaw spoke to Rosepaw. Sickening, actually. She might have barfed if Acornpaw hadn't corrected herself and including Firepaw in asking if they could go on a hunting patrol. Her black-tipped ears perked up. "Hunting sounds like a great idea. Could you come with us, Briarrose?"

❖ Briarrose's eyes widened a small margin at Acornpaw's confession. She was hoping to talk to her specifically? The torbie warrior remained quiet as she allowed the younger cat to finish. Ah. That made sense. Sunstrike had gone missing and Acornpaw was falling behind on her training. It helped that she was familiar with Briarrose and it was probably easier to ask someone you know for help rather than someone you barely know. The older she-cat glanced at Firepaw with an amused expression. She had caught on to the way Acornpaw had emphasized the "we" part. Did Firepaw decide to tag along without asking first? Acornpaw didn't seem to mind that the other would be joining in so Briarrose had no qualms about the scenario. She enjoyed a good hunting trip so she was certainly all for taking the apprentices. ღ

❖ She dipped her head, giving Acornpaw and then Firepaw a warm smile. "Of course. I am more than happy to take you both out hunting." She glanced up at the sky and then back at the two younger cats. "Let us go, then. We must not waste any more time. There is a clan to be fed, after all. I can already hear all those bellies grumbling." She winked playfully (a strange expression for someone like Briar but not unwelcome) at the two before padding out of the camp and leading them into the territory. ღ

❖ She stopped the small group at a small clearing not too far from the camp. She turned to address the younger she-cats, "We can stop here. It is a good spot to begin. We will all meet here once we catch a sufficient amount. Try not to overhunt if you do not wish to make multiple trips back. You can certainly hunt together but I assume that you both would rather do things on your own. Just do not wander off too far in case of any danger. Do not hesitate to call for help. I will come to your side as soon as possible." She breathed out once all that was out of the way. Another smile made it onto her maw. "Practice what you were taught but never forget to have fun doing so." 'Enjoy your youth while you can.' As soon as both the apprentice had indicated that they understood the warrior gestured for them to go on as she padded away to go scent out her own prey, keeping her ears sharp for the apprentices. ღ

❖ It took a little while for her to come across prey. She instantly dropped down into the hunting crouch and quietly stalked the mouse she had spotted. It was near some bushes so the catch was risky but she will try her best. Once she was at the preferred distance, she pounced. ღ

❖ She sighed as the small rodent slipped between her paws and into the bushes. Well, she did say that it was a risky catch. Oh well. She just had to be more careful next time. She wasn't one to give up. ღ

There was a sigh of relief as Briarrose agreed to come, giving her a nod as the warrior brushed past to take the lead. She paused for a second to glance at Firepaw, flashing her a sheepish smile. "...Sorry I didn't get to properly say anything before Briarrose showed up," she said softly, but a purr rose from her. "I'm happy to have you along! More company is always welcomed, now lets go hunting!"

Past that, she allowed the rest of the trip to be in silence as she took in a deep breath, enjoying the fresh forest air. It felt...Right, trying her paw again at her apprentice duties. She had spent so long waiting in camp for Sunstrike to return, she had forgotten how nice it was just to take a walk of all things. As they came to a stop and Briarrose spoke, she nodded in understanding. Stay close, call for help if needed...Remember her training. What little she had gotten...

She could do this. Content to hunt on her own, she turned and tasted the air - quickly locating a squirrel resting on the roots of a nearby tree. Dropping into a crouch, she stalked forward as she tried to remember the best way to approach a squirrel, eyes narrowed in thought. Whatever she was doing - it seemed to be working however as she launched forward, teeth meeting fur as she quickly killed it. She stood there crouched for a few heartbeats, blinking in surprise. She...She had done it! A huff of relief escaped her as she stood up, glancing around for a good place to store her squirrel.

Acornpaw attempted to catch a squirrel and succeeded, costing 5 stamina.
