Recuperation [Sitewide] VkE0dCB

Days had passed since the twoleg scourge descended upon Fourtrees. Sounds of machines and foreign voices still lingered in the air, as did the smell of engines and metal. It was clear the forest was not safe, at least not entirely. But the clearing was, after days of uncertainty, mercifully empty. Of all the places in the forest, it was perhaps the most risky; though the twolegs had left, they left behind a seemingly endless number of traps. Large patrols of twolegs could be heard every so often, shouting at each other in their booming voices.

Watch out! The twolegs are still occupying the forest, laying traps for unsuspecting cats. A hunting roll of 7, 8 or 9 in any forest territory will result in either an encounter with a twoleg or getting caught in a trap! These encounters will not result in your character’s capture, they are only there to keep them on their toes.

Terror was becoming a familiar feeling.

The day the earth moved should have been the height of terror for Birdchaser– for any cat. She had heard plenty of frightening stories when she was still a kit. She heard them whispered still, now that she had grown. The ones that stuck out the most were the recent ones, those that felt like her own memories rather than the tall tales of haggard elders. Hulking beasts caked in sludge and grime, alongside the worst of the forest's ilk brought back from their eternal darkness to torment the living. Though she hadn't been alive yet to see them, she could see imagine their grisled features, the screams they left in their wake.

Still, their recent traumas seemed worse. Maybe it was just because she'd gotten the absolute pleasure of experiencing it directly.

A heavy sigh passed Birdchaser's maw. Sighing, she'd been doing that a lot lately. Sighing, brooding; neglecting sleep or sleeping too much; neglecting meals or attention to her leg. She'd wanted to devote all her energy to keeping SkyClan afloat as they sheltered with the other Clans under Fourtrees. Keeping their spirits high, keeping them fed and well. There was scarcely any energy left to care for herself, though she managed somehow.

And then there were twolegs. Another horror, where they were all just trying to heal, with their oddly gurgling monsters and strange yowls. The rumble of their monsters shook the ground as they stalled, watching hungrily from the treeline. In desperation, so many cats had fled, all in different directions. Too many weren't lucky enough to escape. Her heart panged for all of those unfortunates, even those she would never know by name.

What thin reserves of energy had previously been devoted towards managing her own needs were focused solely on SkyClan now. For days, Birdchaser prowled the woods. As promised, she found as many of her scattered Clanmates as she could. She knew there were missing faces among the crowd; she wouldn't have even needed to look to know something had changed in SkyClan. But when she had not been searching for her family, she remained close to Fourtrees. Watching, perched silently in the boughs of thin trees, as the twolegs set down their odd, silvery wreaths of brambles. As they laid something in them that smelled like food, but carried their reek and an unfamiliar tang. As they slowly, slowly peeled away.

Safety. Finally.

It was tenuous at best, Birdchaser knew that. Though they had left, they were not gone. The remains of them echoed: the acrid reek and distant rumble of their beasts was an ever-present ambience; their shouts and heavy steps filled the air from dawn to sunset; and their traps. So many of their traps. They were gone though, at least from this clearing, at least for now. When they were gone, and she was sure of it, she roused each of her Clanmates from their hiding spots, guiding them into the hollow.

It was a terribly odd feeling. She'd yet to be at the head of SkyClan as they descended the slope into Fourtrees, and never in her life had Birdchaser seen the clearing so... empty. Empty, and yet filled with the clutter of disaster, hastily torn away remains of the other Clans' lives. It was then that the exhaustion caught up with her in full. She wanted more than anything to let her legs fold beneath her and fall asleep in the middle of the clearing. She would sleep for days, or moons, or however long it would take for her to be a new apprentice again, naïve and reckless and not yet exposed to the nature of the forest.

But that was not an action she could afford. SkyClan needed... something. Anything. With great effort, she lumbered to the base of the Great Rock, and hauled herself slowly along the well-worn grooves marking its face. Once she scaled the top, she paused, looking down at the faces below her. She had raced up here in a fit to announce their flight into the woods; she stood here now, surrounded only by the quiet thrum of twolegs and the beat of her Clanmate's hearts. This was never how she'd imagined her first few views from the Rock. It was meant to be scenic, a brilliant full moon lighting the clearing, the casual din of a Gathering echoing around her as she soaked in leadership for the first time.

I don't want this. I'm still so young. I can't stand to be their deputy anymore.

She wheezed. Self-doubt would do her no good now. They would need her, would need an affect of leadership around, even a poor one. "SkyClan," Birdchaser's shaky voice rose through the hollow air, "please report to me if you know of anyone that was taken with– that was– please tell me if anyone was lost, or if someone's gone missing since. Do nothing except rest for now. I'm so, so sorry for these miserable days. The clearing itself is safe: please, just rest. I'm scared if any of you go too far right now, SkyClan will lose you too." The waver in her voice grew thicker there, and Birdchaser's head dropped, hung low against her chest. There were no more words for her to say, other than a silent plea that, if StarClan were listening, they would all be safe soon.

The days since fleeing fourtrees had been chaotic, to say the least. Twolegs still roamed the forest, laying strange contraptions made of gray vines that Wolfblossom stayed away from on instinct, vaguely recognizing the sight of them as much too similar to what they'd used to hold cats at fourtrees. She'd done her best to keep an eye out for her clanmates, and as she headed toward fourtrees, she hoped that they would find nobody else missing that wasn't supposed to be missing.

Wearily she entered the clearing, dropping to her haunches as her pale blue eyes swept over the hollow. Seeing it this empty was strange, she'd been so used to always seeing it full of cats from all clans, but for now it was only Skyclanners that occupied it, for which Wolfblossom was grateful.

Birdchaser's voice had her head lifting to find her sister on the great rock, and Wolfblossom tried to offer her a smile, though it came out brittle and tired. Around the clearing all she saw were tired faces, they'd all been through a lot in too short of a time. Birdchaser had been doing more than her fair share even with her still healing leg, but then, somebody had to, Wolfblossom supposed. Still, Birdchaser - all of her siblings - worried her the most.

"Dawnfeather was captured." Wolfblossom called. She'd heard the freshly-returned warrior's yowls amid the chaos, but a headcount needed to be taken all the same. "There are more of those gray vine thingies the twolegs used scattered in the forest too. Everyone should watch their step."

---

Stonekit kept close to her sister, staying quiet as they were brought to fourtrees. The days since Plumleaf had carried them out had been... More than a blur, and world-weary exhaustion showed within the smoke-gray kit's green eyes. They were safe for the moment, but she couldn't help feeling a sense of dread deep within the pit of her stomach. She had Mistkit though, and that was what mattered. Birdchaser called to the clan, and Stonekit's ears pricked, but the deputy's words seemed to go in one ear and out the other. She was simply too tired to take in what was being said, let alone think too hard.

Astraeus hadn’t been at Fourtrees when the Twolegs attacked; whatever natural luck had kept him alive so far had served him well now. It was days before he ventured back to Fourtrees, and as luck would have it: SkyClan was here. No- not just “SkyClan was here”, more than that. SkyClan was here, alone, and their leader or acting leader seemed despondent, at the very least. Would there every be a better time? The silvery rogue could no longer depend on the unfamiliarity of the other Clans around to shield him; yet he doubted now would be the best time to get up in the grey tabby’s face.

Instead, he lingered at the edge of the rise, just outside the gathering Clanners. Perhaps, even now, they would simply write him off as some confused ThunderClanner… or maybe the younger ones might even just assume he was one of their Clanmates. He wasn’t here to cause trouble. Just to help.

If he had the opportunity, his eyes met those of the grey tabby atop the Greatrock- a gaze of sympathy and a sort of “it’s hard times for everyone right now, let’s all band together”. It was, and banding together was not just a good idea- it might be the only way for the forest cats to survive.

Big fluffy black paws made their way closer and closer to familiar territory. It had been moons since the tom had been part of the Clans, having gone on his moonstone journey and then promptly getting lost on his return home. How it had happened was still a mystery to Beetlepaw, but he knew the storm that had blown in that night had played a big part in the initial misstep. In the darkness and the rain, he had somehow set off in the opposite direction from home. Since, there had been many other misadventures that had kept him from his Clan. Being somewhat of an outsider in SkyClan despite having been born there, there might have been times when the thought of finding a different life occurred to him. A ginger face would appear in his mind any time the thought even flickered into existence.

Dawnfeather, and his entire body would warm from the inside out. He might have still been an apprentice when he got lost, but Beetlepaw had come to realize something while he had been on his own. Something that might have taken him much longer to come to terms with otherwise. He loved Dawnfeather, his closest friend, and that was motivation to keep his paws moving towards the lands he knew.

Beyond that, he simply missed being with the Clan. He did belong there, even if his blood was not the same as theirs. They were all his friends. His heart skipped a beat as he drew nearer to Fourtrees. He had known the clearing was near by, but the earth shaking beneath his paws and the sounds of trees being ripped from the ground had driven him into hiding until it was more calm. Everything felt different after that.

As he got close enough to see the Great Rock, he felt delight spread through his body. SkyClan! Of all the luck. The large tom loped down the slope, joining his Clanmates.

"I found you all!" he crowed, eyes bright despite the somber mood of every cat around him. He looked from face to face, his whiskers twitching as he realized the one face he most looked forward to seeing was not there, "Wh-where's Dawnfeather?"

Mistkit pressed close to Stonekit, something real and solid to hold onto in the uncertainty of being brought from place to place and the unsteady danger that surrounded them. Safety wasn't a thing she could catch in her paws and pin down, but she could stay close to something she knew was safe; that much was easy. The other cats spoke, some of what they said seeming to sound important somehow, but she didn't pay it any mind: her world was small, and simple, and safe; and the rest of it she would simply shut out until she didn't have to worry about it. It would be alright, because it had to.
Lightningpaw had remained in the tree she'd scrambled up far longer than she wanted to admit, even days later. It wasn't that she hadn't been able to find her way back down, she'd just been a tiny bit nervous that the Twolegs and their silver bramble-traps would still be chasing cats down. But eventually she'd made her way down, and she'd stayed with Creampaw since- because he was her friend, and she wasn't going to leave him behind, even in safety. "...You okay?" she asked, though quieted (as much out of curiosity as respect) as Birdchaser began to speak.

She asked them to come forward if they knew who was taken, but- in the scramble to escape, the apprentice hadn't paid much attention. As she kept talking, asking- begging- them to stay safe, apologizing for how poorly the past few days had gone, Lightningpaw caught onto something she'd missed at first: the deputy's voice was shaking, and there was something desperate behind it.

So she's not invincible, she thought to herself.

Though she wasn't born to them, Lightningpaw was SkyClan now; and something about that call for safety, of fear for their continued well-being, struck a chord in her. For once in her life- perhaps the first and only time- she was completely still, laying in the clearing to indicate that she wasn't going anywhere. Her head rested on her paws, and she watched the deputy up on the Greatrock.

I'm not going anywhere today, she thought. She hoped the message was clear. Mostly, she hoped that it mattered.

The illusion of that solemn show of loyalty was broken as a stranger burst into the clearing, calling for a warrior by name.

Though she didn't move much, just lifted her head and twitched her tail. "...Who're you?"

It was lucky that Creampaw had been taught the basic of hunting earlier than he ought to - even with no real formal training yet. he had managed enough to keep him and Lightningpaw fed til they had reunited with the others...But it had been strange, being on their lonesome with just each other for company. Normally such a lengthy absence from his mother would have sent him into a panic, but having Lightningpaw at his side and something to focus on had been...Enough.

But now, he was tired - curled up at Lightningpaw's side with his head resting on her flank as he watched as SkyClan cats started to filter in - his eyes of course scanning for his mother. His ears twitched as Lightningpaw quietly murmured her question, a sigh escaping him.

"...I'm fine," he meowed - a little surprised by how much he meant it. "...Thanks for sticking with me."

Perhaps he would have said more but a new cat - not a SkyClan cat that he knew came rushing into the clearing shouting something about finding them. His fur prickled a little, shifting a little to press himself even more against Lightningpaw as she questioned who the stranger was. He knew of Dawnfeather - was he a Clan cat? He didn't smell like any of the Clans, but he would wait and see if any of the older cats recognized him.

Astershine was tired, in all ways he could think of.

No words came from his open maw as he stood near the edge of fourtrees - that was because there were no words for him to say. His emotions could be read in his demeanor, through the weariness in his eyes, through the way his head hung low, defeated. Not in a literal sense, not defeated in the way that his clanmates, the cats that he'd grown up with, were gone, forcefully ushered into the bellies of monsters, but because he couldn't find a single bright side to this situation. His fight to stay positive had resulted in a loss. Being able to persevere through tragedy was something Astershine prided himself in - something that he couldn't do right now.

The pale warrior leaned into his friend, pressing his flank to Stoatclaw's, seeking any comfort he could manage to find. Within the last few days, he had spent most of his time with the other warrior, conflicted between making the decision to stay in hiding or making the decision to look for others. It was luck that they were able to hear Birdchaser's call, and it was luck that they weren't the only ones to hear it. Cats of Skyclan slowly poured into the clearing. Astershine made sure to note each one, trying desperately to figure out if there was a cat missing. Out of the cats who had shown up so far, he noticed that one was not among them. Crimsonflame. Raising his head, he watched every cat who entered, scanning their features in an effort to identify his father.

Moonlily had found herself at the edge of the Clan, as per usual. Something about knowing her mother was gone... it deeply disturbed her. She didn't want to keep going, and yet, here she was. A long journey had followed the warrior to finally get to Fourtrees, and now that she was here... she was just ready to collapse. Quietly, the large molly looked for Yewfrost, the only cat she seemed able to take in any solace with anymore.
