Birdchaser
No better time, Birdchaser thought ruefully as she once again found herself rising to stand before her scattered Clan. A noise almost like a laugh rattled out of her chest. Couldn't these apprentices have been ready a moon earlier? Or better, a moon later, when SkyClan would finally return home. But, they hadn't, and she didn't see any reason to deny them the rank they had earned. Maybe being named under the crown of Fourtrees would grant them some extra blessing from StarClan. Gathering her voice, the deputy yowled out, "Let all cats old enough to climb the trees, gather around me for a Clan meeting."
Stoatpaw probably would have stayed exactly where he was, not bothering to join the cats gathering at the call of his deputy, but this could be a special moment. Maybe someone had told Birdchaser about what Crimsonflame had done, or maybe Blackbear would be exiled today, freeing Skyclan of a monster in disguise? Wishful thinking. That's what that was, but he could still dream couldn't he? Hesitantly, Stoatpaw joined the rest of his gathered clan and waited for the announcement.
Stoatpaw approached through the crowd quickly, though his hesitance did not go unnoticed. There was a moment of hardness in Birdchaser's gaze, a memory of the way his small claws bore through her fur, but her stony expression softened quickly. Just as his hesitance had not gone unnoticed, his mention of Blackbear's name did not go unremembered. Though he had acted witlessly, he had been young and impressionable. She hoped that earning his name would free him from such faults of his youth. Dipping her head, Birdchaser carried on the ceremony, calling, "I call you all over to witness another warrior joining our ranks. Stoatpaw, step forward, please." A beat to allow the tom to do so before she pressed forward. "You have trained hard as an apprentice, and done well in your time. StarClan, he has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code. I call upon you to look down upon this apprentice, and I commend him to you as a warrior in turn. Stoatpaw-- do you promise to uphold the warrior code, to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?"
The apprentice's ears perked as his name was called. So this was his ceremony? He didn't feel ready, especially with his lack of training in anything other than hunting, but if it was his time then he wouldn't fight it. Stoatpaw stepped forward, but as he continued to listen to Birdchaser's words he couldn't help but feel like they were all lies. Every single word. Still, he couldn't stop himself from uttering the words "I do" with more conviction than he had expected.
Birdchaser dipped her head low when the response came, lingering in the quiet that followed. His answer was sturdy, even if the tom seemed nervous about speaking it. After a few stretched moments, she lifted her head again, attention focused once more on the apprentice. She hoped his new name would strike no ill-will; it was not meant to. However he had chosen to use them, he was good with his claws. He would grow sense into them in time. "Then I grant you your full name as a warrior. From this day on, you will be known to all as Stoatclaw. You have a good heart; be sure to use it well." Stepping into the crowd, Birdchaser touched her nose lightly to Stoatclaw's head. "Your vigil will be different than others', but still, you will sit the night and watch Fourtrees as SkyClan rests. Congratulations, Stoatclaw."
