Birchkit's Medicine Cat Ceremony

It had been a little while since Batsong first found out that Birchkit was to be her apprentice and a little while after she had told them and they had accepted and been very eager and excited.

Now they were of age to fully become a paw and could begin full time under her guidance. Traveling herbs would be needed for their journey over as was tradition. Luckily, windclan was the closest of the clans to the moonstone but the herbs still helped on the journey. Hmm what better time for Birchkit to learn about traveling herbs for their own ceremony? She figured. Grinning she went over to them, remembering from last time how she accidently startled them she purred softly when approaching to alert them and shuffled her paws a little to not sneak up on them like she accidently did before when they went to go get the herbs near camp.

"Birchkit?" she meowed softly. Its time for you to formally become my apprentice. T-tonight we journey to the moonstone she smiled looking down at her soon to be mca.

With a flick of her tail she slowly led them over to the med den. She carefully and diligently prepared some traveling herbs for them both to go to the moonstone. She explained as she went so they could watch and learn too.

My training was ... not really that f-formal or traditional, I didnt have a specific mentor, I learned from many medicne cats over time and had alot of self training and practice she told them. This wrap of herbs was shown to me by Smallbean... the d-deputy who was once also a great med-cat

She laid two beech leaves down in front of them. This is sorta a wrapper to hold things in place

She picked out some Chamomile, Sorrel, and Burnet setting them all down in neat little piles before them as well.

Chamomile, good for easing the mind she explained taking half of it and putting it on her beech leaf leaving the other half for them to follow along.

She next did the same with the other herbs
Sorrel here is good for strength and helps keep hunger away. Burnet for longer lasting stamina she explained as she finished putting her piles on her leaf.

hmm some put daisy leaves in for stiff joints... I usually save that for our cranky elders... but you are welcome to add some of that too she teased grinning

Then comes the f-fun part she giggled a little,

she carefully wrapped the edges of the leaf around the pile of goodies and rolled it up tight so they would all be together.


She set it before them so they could inspect the herb wrap. T-try to smell the herbs as you go too, that way you can have that too. she purred encouragingly.


Glancing at the sky the sun was just starting to set and the light fading, the first of the stars beginning to shine overhead. Th-the herbs dont taste the best but they do their j-job well she meowed eating hers quietly.

Batsong looked at the entrance of the cave then back to her apprentice. "r-right... so inside the cave there is a beautiful glowing rock.  Its one of the prettiest things I have ever s-seen. So to speak with starclan we will go in touch our noses to the stone and fall asleep" she explained.

She walked with Birchkit guiding them through the dark tunnel that eventually led to the stone.  It was pitch dark for awhile only guided by their whiskers along the narrow cave leading them onwards.

Eventually they got to the stone and it glowed from the moonlight hitting it through the gap in the ceiling.

Batsong felt a wave of pride... this was her apprentice and she was gonna do everything she could for them.  She wouldnt lose them like she had lost her Rosepaw.



Sitting before the kit she smiled warmly down to them.

"Ancestors of StarClan, I p-..p-resent you with this apprentice, Birchkit. They have officially accepted the path of the medicine cat. Grant Birch your wisdom and insight so that they may understand your n-noble ways and heal Windclan in accordance to your will. Until you earn your full medicine cat name, you'll continue to be known as Birchpaw."

She meowed loudly for once, she was happy with herself that she didnt stutter too much throughout the speech.

"Birchpaw!" she cheered happily.

"ok,. ... and n-now we s-sleep and you m-meet your starclan cat" she purred very excited to have them officially as her apprentice now.

She went over to the moonstone and next to the newly named birchpaw and fell asleep soon after she touched her nose to the stone

A silver tabby she-cat approached Birchpaw, stars dancing in her fur. Her blue eyes seemed to rake over the new medicine cat, although not unkindly, before she smiled.

"Welcome to StarClan, Birchpaw."

The molly sat down, an inviting look in her eyes. And then she introduced herself.

"My name is Mistystripe. I was a medicine cat apprentice, many moons ago, long before any cat alive today was born. I hear you all are reworking the tunnels now? Please be careful with those. There is a reason they had been closed down, I was only one of many caught in them. Anyway, that's not what you're here to hear, is it? You want to be a medicine cat apprentice! And I think you will make a great one, too! There is just one thing that a lot of cats struggle with. But it will always be true. Cats will get hurt. Cats will get sick. And sometimes you won't be able to help them. There will be days when the most you can do is make them as comfortable as possible before they move on. Every medicine cat will face that. And it will hurt. There will be cats that blame you. The thing you need to remember, though, is that it is not your fault. When a cat's time has come, even the most skilled medicine cat can do nothing about it. All you can do is help as many cats as you can. Remember that you are doing good things, don't let those that are lost weigh you down. And if nothing else, remember that you have your Clan to support you. They will always be there for you, through the hardest times. Not just your mentor, but every cat in that Clan. Even if your role in the Clan, and your responsibilities, are different from every member, you're not alone. So let them be there for you, as much as you are there for them."
