Sparring with the Mentor [for KJSage]

Ravenclaw padded to the apprentice den, where her new apprentice awaited. She hadn't been a mentor in quite some time, but it was like hunting in the trees: you never forgot. She slipped in and gently prodded Wolfpaw, waking her up. "Wake up, Wolfpaw. We're going to spar today." With that, she left the den, waiting for Wolfpaw at the edge of the camp.

Wolfpaw had been stirring awake, and Ravenclaw's gentle paw had been what she needed to shake off the final cobwebs of sleep. "I'm up," Blinking up at her mentor, Wolfpaw rose to her paws while shaking a few scraps of moss from her long pelt. The prospect of training was an exciting one, and when Ravenclaw said they would be sparring, Wolfpaw quickly made her way from the den, if a bit awkwardly as she tried to maneuver around the other still-sleeping apprentices with her large paws. It would be some time before she grew into them and reached her full height, and for now that left the young apprentice hopelessly awkward and graceless in her movements. "I'm ready, Ravenclaw," She mewed, excitement not-at-all hidden in her pale gaze.

Ravenclaw laughed, getting into her fighting stance. "Alright, let me see your fighting stance." She waited for Wolfpaw to get ready, then continued. "Let's start with a front paw blow. Remember to keep your claws sheathed. You're among your own for now, but someday those claws will have to come out. Not today, but just remember that."

Wolfpaw watched as Ravenclaw lowered herself slightly, taking note of how she positioned herself in a way that would help her keep her balance. The white and gray apprentice attempted to emulate it as best she could. Playfighting with her littermates and the other kits in the nursery had helped her figure out that balance was important, and so she kept her paws spread evenly and lowered herself slightly. She'd figured out that helped a bit in keeping from getting knocked over, but that could've been that Wolfpaw had been larger than some kits, too. She wasn't quite sure which. With her build being more lanky and awkward at the moment, she would do what she could to at least try and look impressive. It would take a long time for her to grow into the sturdy, muscular frame that many of the older warriors had. "How's this?"

Ravenclaw asked her to try a front paw move, and Wolfpaw paused, pale blue eyes assessing her mentor. She was sleek and doubtlessly graceful, and she was sure the dark-furred she-cat had plenty of experience (at least, mom had said so) in a fight. To start off with the move she'd suggested would be a perfect opportunity for Ravenclaw to dodge, or so Wolfpaw thought. It's what she would've done, of course. Doing what she asked wouldn't allow her the element of surprise, and even if this was just training, Wolfpaw was still competitive.

She couldn't quite keep the mischief from her expression, indicating that she had little intention of following through with Ravenclaw's instruction. Instead, Wolfpaw leaped for her mentor. She had yet to earn the powerfully-musculed hind legs gained from seasons of hunting in the trees, combined with youth and relative inexperience, she was sure that her jump lacked the power that it might when she was older. Still, maybe it would catch her mentor off-guard. With claws sheathed, Wolfpaw swiped her paws at her mentor. It was impressive, or at least she thought so.

Ravenclaw was indeed surprised by the sudden jumping strike from Wolfpaw. That was not exactly what she had intended to happen, but she still was able to brace herself for the strike. She scowled at the apprentice, who was grinning to herself. "I don't recall asking you to do that," she hissed, then suddenly jumped at Wolfpaw, headbutting her in the flank. "Always keep your guard up! Never let your opponent expose a weakness!"

The headbutt had not been what Wolfpaw was expecting, and she glanced at her mentor, a look of surprise crossing her face. Ravenclaw was right, though, and a fight was no time to sit around gawking at your opponent as if they'd gone insane or pondering what to do. Wolfpaw scampered past Ravenclaw... Then aimed sharp teeth at her tail and yanked back. She didn't know if she was strong enough to pull the older warrior off balance, but if she was as surprised by the move as Wolfpaw had just been, maybe there was a chance.

Wolfpaw used Tail Yank for -15 sp, dealing -7 damage. Ravenclaw is stunned for one turn.

Ravenclaw had not expected the teeth, that was for sure. The 'no claws' rule was supposed to include teeth too, but it seemed that Wolfpaw had no desire to follow those rules. She scowled, lashing her tail after getting it out of Wolfpaw's mouth, stumbling but remaining on her paws. "Oh, you want a real fight, do you? Then it's a real fight you're going to get!" Sorry Beechfang.

Ravenclaw is stunned for one turn.

Oh, Ravenclaw hadn't been expecting this. It was wonderful, really. Sure, she could have followed Ravenclaw's directions, but this was a spar between clanmates, not like she was in any real danger as if they were fighting a predator or a cat from another clan, right? How else was she going to prove her worth in battle? She swiped at Ravenclaw with a sheathed forepaw again. She'd recovered from that tail yank faster than Wolfpaw had thought, but she still had a chance, right?

Wolfpaw used Front Paw Strike for -7 sp, dealing -6 damage. Ravenclaw is no longer stunned.

Ravenclaw dug her claws through the earth before retracting them, remembering that this was just a battle with a clanmate: her apprentice specifically. There couldn't be any true damage to befall Wolfpaw, but that didn't mean she couldn't battle. So she jumped at Wolfpaw, pinning the apprentice to the ground. "Remember that you won't always have the height or weight advantage. What will you do then?"

Ravenclaw used Leap and Hold for -15 sp, dealing -10 damage. Wolfpaw is pinned for two turns.
