Maples in the Mist [c]

Mistysky hated the dark figures that surrounded the camp, her fur bristling as she tried to keep track of where every single one was. The fox molly was having a snooze, acting like she owned the place, but at least Mistysky could train her apprentice without her in the way. Only bad thing was she would probably be stuck with another dark forest cat watching her.

Still, Dark Forest or no Dark Forest, she had a responsibility to a young she-cat, and she would start today. Heading to the apprentice den, Mistysky searched for the molly. "We're going hunting, whenever you're ready. Meet me at the entrance."

Mistysky led her apprentice along the moor. With the coming of New Leaf, prey was starting to come out, and it was not long until she spotted a warren of rabbits, some just tiny little things. She held her tail up to stop Maplepaw before speaking.

"Alright, watch closely. I am going to demonstrate what to do, and when they settle, see if you can catch one. Alright? Stay here."

Mistysky got low to the ground, picking out which one she wanted to go for as she got closer. They were all fairly skinny, having taken the same leafbare toll the Clans had, but that would not make them easy. She spotted an younger one, still adventurous and unaware of the dangers as it strayed away from the others, exploring the area around it.

A mistake that Mistysky would make it's last.

With a burst of speed, she burst forward, starting the chase.

It did not take long for her to close the distance between her and her prey, and before it could get back to it's family, Mistysky knocked it down with unsheathed claws, before pinning it and mercifully taking it's life. She then watched as the rest of the warren regrouped a few fox lengths away. Even with them being hunted, it seemed they, too, were desperate to eat.

Maplepaw had been catching a light nap in. Slowly, she had become more and more on edge by the presence of the odd figures. While she was still just a kit, they had simply been mysterious figures for her to admire - but now, knowing their true nature further each and every day, they unnerved her. It was Mistysky's summon that gave her the courage to leave the den, and she heeded the call, rising with a stretch that satisfied waking her otherwise tired bones. Shaking out her golden pelt, she padded to meet with mer mentor.

Warmer weather was certainly meant to bring an abundance of new life to the Clans. It was a much better feeling than the cold that penetrated her pelt in her younger days. "Sounds good." She confirmed. Something told her instinctually to remain relatively quiet, and she watched her mentor stalk the prey with an expertice only time had brought alongside it. Her tail twitched with enthusiasm as she watched, a large smile coming to her maw as she had to refrain from cheering on her mentor for catching the rabbit. Allowing time for the disturbance of Mistysky's actions to settle, she looked around.

A hare, half-white, half-brown, seemed to be hopping about the moor. It was decently sized, having probably been hiding away and reserving its energy over the cold leafbare months. Claws unsheathed, she made her attempt.

It was through sheer luck she had been able to trap the creature. Her pounce was almost just short enough that it escaped, but she had managed to sink her claws into its hindquarters. That momentum let her pull the hare closer to her, ending its life with a swift bite. With her small chest heaving from the effort, she sat down, looking towards her mentor with a prideful grin. "Like that?"

Maplepaw attempted to catch a hare, and was successful!

Mistysky was pleasantly surprised at the speed her apprentice had managed to catch something so quickly, even if the methods needed some polishing.

"That... wasn't bad. But remember, you are WindClan. You have been gifted speed to hunt with, you never need to leap. You were lucky to have managed to grab on to that hare, but it could have just as easily fled, and you would have no more traction to chase it. Or it could have dragged you away, that's happened too.

We rely on keeping our paws on the ground, as that is where speed comes from. You only lose it in the air. Instead of pouncing, try catching up to the hare and knocking it over. Like this..."

Mistysky paused, looking for another rabbit or hare to demonstrate on. Preferably a hare, as that is what Maplepaw had gotten. As if on cue, a brown hare came out of its nest, oblivious to the hunts that had occurred, as it wandered away to gain a meal. Mistysky circled around, coming from behind the den, before she began to sprint.

As she was coming from the direction of its home, the hare, on instinct, fled the other way, attempting to circle around to get back to its nest. But with Mistysky always in between it and the hole in the ground, the hare was out of options. And just as she said she was going to do, she reached out a paw, swiping at the hare and knocking it off balance, so it fell to the ground. It couldn't recover before she was on top of it, taking its life with a swift bite.
