For the First Time [Open - Hunting]

Starlingflare didn't know why he was the one that was assigned to lead a hunting patrol considering how long it's been since he had actually hunted. It was certainly going to be a challenge after the loss of his eye. He had to keep moving his head to get a good look at the area around him. At least one of the cats on the patrol with him was his mother.. She wouldn't judge him right?

He paused in his steps determining this was a good spot as any to start their hunt. "This should be good." He told the cats along with him.

Cherrycloud was assigned to a hunting patrol and followed Starlingflare out of camp and into the woods. Her day-to-day life had been pretty boring. All she had been doing recently was patrolling, occasionally doing something else. Some of her feathers that she had collected went missing, and she decided to spend today looking for more. Once they reached their stopping point, she parted ways with the others. A flash of bright blue feathers caught her eyes and she instinctively dropped into a crouch. She stalked closer until she could pounce.

Cherrycloud sprung and landed squarely on her prey. She bird let out one final squawk as she delivered the killing bite. She triumphantly picked up her catch and carefully scraped some dirt over it. She didn’t want to damage any of its beautiful feathers. She set off again to try and find more birds that she could get the feathers of.

There was nothing simpler than just going on a hunting patrol. No matter who she was with, Appledapple could just sink in the sights and smells of the territory and come home with a ton of fresh-kill. She really enjoyed hunting, honestly. The lack of conversation among her patrolmates suited her just fine. In the silence, it was no trouble to immediately start tracking the first prey she saw-- a fat squirrel. Perfect.

In the tried and true ways Minkstar had taught her, she lowered down into a hunting crouch and leapt for the squirrel. She caught it effortlessly, paws landing squarely on its neck. Her mouth watered. She was almost tempted to eat it then and there, but she wanted to show it off back at camp, so she buried it shallowly under a bush and began scanning the undergrowth for more prey.

Starlingflare watched the others start their hunting, making catches as they managed. He let out a small sigh.. How was this going to go for him? He followed the usual routine he did, looking for a piece of prey he could catch, spotting a mouse.. He crouched low stalking forward through the brush, trying his best to judge the distance between him and the mouse as well as trying to stay hidden. Once he was close he pounced. He missed.. He had come up short.. Cursing himself he stepped away from the spot he failed. He really needed to get used to the lack of depth. Stars this was gonna be hard.

Cherrycloud walked around aimlessly trying to find another bird to hunt. She glanced around at the golden leaves littering the ground kept on searching the forest. She thought about using leaves as decorations until her eyes met a beautiful starling. Its feathers shimmered in the light and she completely forgot about what she was thinking. She dropped into her hunters crouch and slowly inched her way forward. Her eyes were locked on the pretty bird as she leaped toward it.

Her paws landed on the bird and Cherrycloud reached down once again. She quickly bit the bird and picked up her prey. Another flawless catch. With this luck, she would be able to get tons of pretty feathers. She headed back to where she put her other catch and dug another hole. She buried her catch once again and set off.

Appledapple barely spared a glance for Starlingflare and her sister as she continued looking for prey. On a better day, she might try bragging about her catch or starting up a conversation, but she was in the mood for silence. She'd rather just get as much prey as she could, then go back to camp.

In the corner of her eye, she saw a rustle. A vole. Again, she dropped into a crouch, focused on the small rodent, which was curled up under a bush. Once she was close enough, she leapt for it, paws outstretched. Unfortunately, she aimed just a tiny bit too far to the right, and her paws were too small to catch it after her minor mistake. Annoyed, she got up, shook off her fur, and began glancing around the bushes again.

Appledapple attempted to catch a vole, but was unsuccessful.

Stars he needed to catch something... He couldn't let his clanmates do all the work while he missed everything in sight. His tail hung low behind him, feeling a little discouraged from his earlier miss. His ears twitched as he heard something moving near by. He paused in his pawsteps, single yellow eye turning to the source. A squirrel. He crouched, and crept closer, making sure to close the distance a little more this time, hoping he could make the catch. This time he managed to get closer, but the squirrel had scampered away before he landed fully.. Thorns.. he needed to get better.

Cherrycloud’s hunting had been great so far, and she hoped to be able to catch a bit more today. She wandered through the forest until she spotted a squirrel. It was eating an acorn underneath a tree and she started to approach it. It didn’t notice her as she slowly crept toward it. She had reached the edge of the clearing and prepared to pounce.

Cherrycloud leaped at the squirrel and landed directly on it. It attempted to escape, but her hold was too strong. She quickled killed it and picked up the prey. She had made another great catch, and she wondered how everyone else was doing. She found her way back to where she had put her other catches and buried her newest.
