October Medicine Cat Meeting 2021

Upon reflection, it was no surprise that she was first to Mothermouth. Hentooth sat just outside the shrouded cave, flicking her tail idly. Maybe she was early- it was hard to not be, with WindClan so close and with WindClannish speed. Better to be early than late, though. Less talking, hopefully. Though, if she had to talk to somecat from another Clan, it might as well be the medicine cats. Her talk with Beechface came to mind… at least something good had come of that- namely, she realized that she was impetuous as a hare with its tail on fire. Unfortunately, it was likely the SkyClan medicine cat had realized that too…

She shook out her short fur. Thank the stars for the still air- a cutting wind would’ve pierced straight through her pelt. Maybe tonight she’d get a prophecy… or a vision… or not. StarClan would give it to her if she needed it… although a small, kittish part of her just wanted one because it was cool. And it would give her something to puzzle over! Stars knew life could sometimes… get a bit boring. But that was good, right? Anyways, one simple puzzle would be nice.

The young medicine cat turned her gaze to the path she had taken up Highstones, scanning it for the other medicine cats…

Basilpaw's long walk to Highstones, which should've been a joyful occasion, had been marred by sadness. Batglow had been taken by the rouges, and despite learning about the whole situation from her mother and father, his sacrifice had been a heavy blow. He had been her mentor these last stressful moons, and she would miss him dearly. Secretly, she hoped that speaking to StarClan tonight would give her an idea of how to find him and get him back to the clan, but she knew it was unlikely. Instead, as she got closer to Mothermouth, she put on a bright smile and prepared to greet all the medicine cats. She had met a few at the Gathering but not all of them, and despite her burning chest from the long walk, it didn't kill her enthusiasm. So far she only saw one cat, and after getting a few licks of water from a nearby puddle she approached the unfamiliar she-cat with purred. "Hi there, I'm Basilpaw! I'm ShadowClan's medicine cat apprentice, what's your name?"

Dovefrost wasn't sure where his apprentice had run off too.. but it seemed like she wasn't going to return. Part of him was sadden by the fact that she had disappeared.. but at the same time she seemed unsure of herself when she had agreed to be his apprentice.. Maybe things just had gotten too complicated for her. Was it his fault? Maybe..

The white tom approached the slowly growing group of cats, giving the two cats a polite nod as a greeting before sitting off to the side. He wasn't really in the mood to talk right now, but he wasn't going to turn anyone away if they approached him.,

Cloverheart came up to Highstones nearly tripping over her own paws. She was half-running, half-stumbling her way there, stopping only to assess the rocks before slowly hauling her way up there. When she arrived at the top, she was huffing and her legs were trembling, but her wide smile showed she was happy she made it at all.

And she wasn't the last to arrive, either. Or late. She'd been so worried, and for nothing! Sitting down right where she stood, Cloverheart gave a warm purr to the three medicine cats that had already arrived. "Hi, everybody!" She greeted, making sure to nod towards Hentooth especially.

For the first time in his life, Muddythorn made the journey to Highstones alone. Beechface was still confined to camp after the... unfortunate situation sunrises prior, leaving the tom as pretty much the sole medicine cat. Of course his mentor could still help and heal, but she wasn't allowed to go to the meeting. Naturally, he was late. He had never been one for an interrupted sleep cycle, even as a warrior, and he had manage to oversleep, meaning now he was practically running the last few paces to mothermouth. "Sorry I'm late!" He called as soon as he was close enough. Luckily, it didn't seem like he'd held the others back too much, given that the Riverclan medicine cat, Cloverheart, had only just arrived too.

Once he had joined the others and regained his breath, he explained. "Not used to having to do this by myself. Beechface is..." What was he supposed to say? Medicine cats were supposed to be separate from clan conflict, but frankly the whole situation was a bit of a mess. "Beechface can't come."

Hentooth had been staring off into space. Stars. Stars stars. She amused herself by trying to count them- but quickly gave up. No point. And then a young voice called out to her, and Hentooth turned to face B-Basilpaw. ShadowClan. “Hentooth. I- I think I ran into your… brother, once? Loudnose?” She tried to keep her tone neutral, she really did. And she somewhat succeeded. But still. Loudnose? Really?

But could she really judge. Hentooth… well, at least it sounded cool.

“Greetings, Dovefrost,” she mewed, dipping her head to the older tom. Mo-Moonpaw wasn’t with him. Perhaps his apprentice was injured- but then he wouldn’t have left camp. If he didn’t want to talk, though, she wouldn’t press him.

Cloverheart and Muddythorn arrived practically on each other’s tails. “Cloverheart, Muddythorn,” she greeted warmly. She liked the RiverClan medicine cat, and… somehow it was hard to judge Muddythorn. He was too nice. “If Beechface isn’t coming this is everyone, correct?”

When no one corrected her, the calico shook out her short fur and padded into Mothermouth, not checking to see if her fellow medicine cats were following. Once she reached the stone, she pressed her nose to it and quickly fell asleep.

She was suspended in space. A cold wind ruffled her fur. There was nothing, merely blackness, a cold, empty void, like the space between the stars where the Dark Forest lay. Her heart started racing, her ears ringing. Only her trust in StarClan kept her from yowling, struggling, crying out against the invisible bonds.

“A misguided heart and hesitant paws will bring about your downfall.”

A soft whisper, spoken into her ear, a slight brush against her fur, then nothing. Nothing. Not even the darkness- and then Hentooth jolted back to herself, panting. The Moonstone towered above her… her fellow medicine cats lay slumbering around her. Everything was normal… but she had witnessed the power of StarClan. Whew. She could think over this later- for now, she’d rest, let her racing heart get back to normal.

Muddythorn was glad that no-one pressed to know where Beechface was, knowing that firstly, he would explain it terribly, and secondly, it just wasn't a good idea. Tonight they were here to speak with Starclan, so that's what they would focus on. It also seemed like Hentooth was very straight-to-the-point, and quickly slipped down the tunnel, leaving him once again to hurry after. The tunnels were as dark and twisting as ever, but no longer scary, now he knew them so well.

He reached the moonstone cavern, blinking slightly in the light. Just like normal, he took his place next to the other medicine cats and lay down, gently pressing his nose to the stone. After the hurried walk here, he was tired, and fell asleep instantly, surprisingly comfortable on the cold stone floor.

Much to the medicine cat's surprise, it wasn't the starry of plains that greeted him in his dream. Instead, he stood in darkness. There was no forest in sight and no scent of one either. Confused, Muddythorn looked around, calming down slightly when he saw a star-covered cat padding towards him. However, he wished the message itself could be as comforting. "A tree crumbles when its foundation is uprooted." Muddythorn didn't even have any time to ask questions before the Starclan warrior was gone, just as suddenly as they had appeared. A tree crumbles when its foundation is uprooted. That was pretty vague. It was a basic statement; even the most skilled warrior couldn't stand up if they had no paws. But still, the tom had a strange feeling that this was specifically linked to Skyclan, meaning the foundations could be anything. The elders, the leadership, the forest itself. All of them were in trouble, by the sounds of it.

Muddythorn made a hasty approach only heartbeats after she arrived, and Cloverheart flicked an ear in his direction. Beechface wasn't coming... something turned in the she-cat's mind, telling her she should feel something about that. In the end, she just felt confused, and she was grateful for Hentooth taking the initiative so she didn't have to sit alone in her thoughts for too long. Giving Dovefrost and Basilpaw a half-smile, Cloverheart followed the others and dipped into the tunnel.

Sleep was long coming once she reached the Moonstone. Despite her exhaustion from the trip, she found it impossible to settle, readjusting her limbs every few moments, waving her tail. Eventually, sick of the tossing and turning, she roughly shoved her nose against the Moonstone, letting the familiar cold take her to rest.


When Cloverheart awoke in the familiar warm fields of StarClan, a cat was already waiting for her. Their back was turned, focus on some distant place, and as the she-cat approached closer, she realized she couldn't tell who they were. Not just that– she couldn't see them clearly at all. Tipping her head, she sat down at the cat's side and waited.

Her wait wasn't long. At her presence, a rumbling voice rose out of them: "The shadows of wings can be felt even after the nest is empty." And that seemed to be all they had to say. Cloverheart blinked a few times, leaning forward to try and catch sight of their face, but all their features were warped by a thin veil of mist.

"What do you mean by that?" She pressed, knowing StarClan wasn't one for straight answers. Maybe this cat would be kind enough to offer her some direction.

"The shadows of wings can be felt even after the nest is empty."

Ears lowering, Cloverheart sighed, expression twisting as she thought on what wings could be. Her tail lashed gently against her, and she settled in the foggy discomfort of half-sleep and restless thought.

"Nice to meet you Hentooth!"  Basilpaw couldn't help her giggle as the WindClan she-cat mentioned her brother, and she nodded.  "Oh yes!  I'm not surprised, he definitely makes himself known."  Smiling, the petite she-cat turned to greet the other medicine cats as they arrived; first Dovefrost, followed by Cloverheart, and finally Muddythorn.  She welcomed each of them with a purr, offering Muddythorn a cheery ""It's okay!" in response to his claim of being late, but his other words intrigued her more.  She had heard much about the SkyClan medicine cat Beechface, not a lot of it good but her reputation only fueled Basilpaw's curiosity.  She was the one medicine cat she had not met yet, and she hoped she would get the chance soon.

When Hentooth led the way into Mothermouth, Basilpaw got slowly to her paws and followed the group down into the dark tunnels, touching her tail to the walls to keep her bearings.  Before long though they emerged into the Moonstone cavern, the brilliant light once again taking her breath away.  Looking up at the stone, she felt almost giddy; it had been a while since she had spoken to StarClan, not since her ceremony in fact, and she was excited to see them again.  Perhaps she could speak with the pretty WindClan she-cat again!  Settling down next to Cloverheart, she took a deep breath and closed her eyes, pressing her nose to the crystal and letting herself give in to the sweet embrace of sleep.

However, that was not to be, as when Basilpaw opened her eyes the only sight she saw was...nothing.  It was all dark, not even the territory of StarClan was there to greet her, and for a moment she was scared.  However, a voice broke through the confusion, though it didn't relieve her fears.  "The claws of history will reopen old wounds, but careful not to leave new scars."  What?  I don't understand...tell me more!  She had questions, many!  As quickly as the voice appeared though it vanished, she Basilpaw found herself regaining consciousness.  Opening her eyes, she saw her fellow medicine cats stirring as well, but for a moment she simply laid still and closed her eyes.  The claws of history will reopen old wounds...careful not to leave new scars...  Perhaps this had something to do with the rouges, she had heard rumors of their leader having an old attachment to ShadowClan, but she wasn't totally sure.  How could she be with such a vague message?  Puzzled, but not frustrated, she got to her paws slowly so that her heart could adjust to being awake and followed some of the other medicine cats out of the cave; she would certainly have a lot to think about on the walk home.
