Around the River (Closed)

The sun was shaded by think clouds, hiding the full brightness of the sun.  There seemed to be a major threat of heavy rain or even storms, but because Scarletpaw was an apprentice now she needed to go on hunting patrols.  Even though she was one who always liked to be out in the rain, she hated the harsh storms that Greenleaf would bring from time to time, so she hoped that this would just be some fast hunting and then right back to camp.

She was the first one to arrive.  This was her first hunting patrol and she wanted to do make sure that she would do well.  She waited for the two other cats to arrive and greeted them both with a simple nod of her head and flick of her tail.  She didn't say anything, she was too shy to say anything.

Once all of them were ready, she made her way out of Riverclan.  She tried to stay away from where the river was, because that didn't work to well when she went out of camp with Torrentkit before.  Scarletkit squinted her eyes, trying to spot anything that moved really.  The dogs being around made there be less and less prey.  She would consider herself lucky if she could catch one thing today.  She looked around for a little bit and suddenly she spotted a little bit of movement.

A toad was hopping around, taking full advantage of the fairly cold weather.  She got down low, trying to remember how exactly to hunt.  She was a pretty new apprentice and didn't have too much experience.  She got low and slowly went closer to it, all the time wondering if she was doing the whole hunting thing correctly.  It began to hop away, but she ran after it quickly and jumped right next to it.  She put her paws around it and unsheathed her claws, digging her claws into the small creature.  It slowly stopped trying to get away and went limp.  She felt pretty bad for killing the toad.  She realized that they needed to eat, but she still felt pretty bad.

After she made sure it was completely dead, she buried it.  She hoped that the toad didn't have a family or anything.  Stop overthinking this!  She scolded herself.  You are a cat and this is prey.  You are meant to hunt it not pity it.  It's fine!  All cat's kill prey!  She went back to the group, still keeping calm.  She had always kept her emotions well hidden and this was a perfect example of that.  No one could have ever guess any internal conflict she was having.

Swanmist was getting ready for her first patrol as a warrior. It wasn't exactly the best looking weather for a patrol, the sky was grey and the threat of rain seemed like it was getting closer every second. The silent warrior exited camp, nodded at Scarletpaw and waited for Flypaw to arrive. Once everyone had arrived, the group quietly made their way further out into the territory. She wasn't leading the patrol and was probably just there to make sure the apprentices didn't get into trouble, but then again, what would she do if they did get into trouble? Flick her tail angrily? Well, now wasn't the time to think about why she was on the patrol, she actually had to do the patrol.

Scarletpaw had managed to catch a toad, she flicked her tail and started to look for something to catch. A bird. Swanmist wasn't the best at catching birds, but at least it was something. She crept towards it, keeping low, her ears staying pricked. The whole clan was weak, so she didn't get very far before the bird noticed and flew away. She watched as it flew off, in some other territory. Swanmist looked down at her paws. Turning back, she met up with the group. She sat down, the sad look on her face making it clear that she didn't catch anything.

Flypaw was the last to tumble into place with a mumbled “sorry I’m late” as their greeting, their dark fur sleek on one side and hopelessly mussed on the other. They’d slept through the night for once—and a chunk of the day, too. Though their eyes still wouldn’t open all the way, they felt awake, buzzing with an energy they hadn’t felt in nearly a moon. They brightened further at their first glimpse of the sky. No storm could be even half as refreshing as a nice, long swim, but the dogs and Twolegs along the riverbank refused to budge, and Flypaw would take sky-water over no water at all.

Without further ado, the patrol set off, Flypaw waking up more with every step. Scarletpaw broke away first. Her approach was messy—but messy or not, it worked in the end, and she returned with freshly overturned soil on her forepaws. Flypaw shot her a smile. “Good catch.” At least it wasn’t one of WindClan’s rabbits. Even the lumpiest toads were better than those. Swanmist disappeared next with a flick of her tail (not a signal, Flypaw assumed when Scarletpaw didn’t go hurrying after her); a bird fluttered out of the grass a few moments later.

Suddenly, it was their turn. They bent down until the tip of their nose brushed the dirt, and caught the scent of something alive in the mud. Their gaze flicked upward. Sure enough, a frog sat upwind on a softer patch of earth. Sinking into the crouch they and Turtlefur had tried to perfect, they inched closer one step at a time—hurled themself forward—felt the frog’s smooth skin beneath their paws. It was dead with a swipe. Murmuring their thanks to StarClan (however badly they wished it could be a fish instead), Flypaw buried their catch in a shallow hole and returned to their patrolmates, muzzle held a whisker higher than before.

Scarletpaw smiled at Flypaw.  "Thanks," her voice still, as it always was, quiet.  She watched as he caught something of his own and nodded towards him.  "Good catch also." Her tail waved happily through the air, feeling a bit more confident now.  She walked towards Swanmist.  "I'm happy that a warrior was able to join us.  It makes me a little less afraid of the dogs."  That was quite a bit of talking to cats she didn't know for her.

She heard some leaves on a bush move around a little.  There was something in that bush!  Scarletpaw didn't know what it was yet, but wherever it was it could help feed Riverclan.  She got closer and closer to that creature and the bush they were hiding in.  An outline of the shape.  Suddenly, a claw emerged.  She moved out of the way just in time so it didn't hit her eyes, but it still sliced the side of her face.  She exclaimed in pain, still not used to that sudden intense feeling of pain or the red liquid that was currently running down her face.

The raccoon began coming out and Scarletpaw quickly started walking backwards so it couldn't hit her again.  Come on!  You're an apprentice.  You need to fight!  She ran towards it and bit down on it's side with as much force as she could.

The white warrior was slightly jealous of the fact that two apprentices had done better than her. She wasn't exactly an old warrior, or a powerful one for that matter, but still, it made her feel a bit unimportant. The black apprentice had caught a frog, she nodded as a 'well done' to Flypaw. Scarletpaw was now walking towards her, which made her stumble back a little, uncomfortable. She nodded after hesitation at the apprentice's comment, and then watched as the black striped tabby approach a bush, to hunt again, Swanmist assumed.

She was wrong.

She was very, very wrong.

It wasn't exactly prey that Scarletpaw had been hunting, but a raccoon. Swanmist suddenly felt defensive for her clan mate, she looked back at Flypaw, claws coming out as she flicked her head towards it, signalling for the black apprentice to fight. She walked towards it, and wow, was it big. She knew raccoons were around the same size as your regular warrior, but she had never actually seen one in-cat (or in-raccoon, in this case). She leaped over Scarletpaw, onto the raccoon, pushing it over, she backed away as the raccoon quickly recovered. Swanmist narrowed her eyes, and fluffed up the tail, swishing it angrily as if to say. 'I'm a threat, back off.' But the raccoon didn't seem to understand, it was still there, but looked weak.

Between Swanmist being Swanmist and Scarletpaw being more or less a stranger, Flypaw had expected this patrol to be quiet. Scarletpaw’s first reply caught them off guard, the complement even more so. The two of them were denmates (admittedly not for long), yet this was the most they’d ever heard her talk. They flicked an ear. “Uh, thanks.” She wandered elsewhere, and Flypaw lowered their muzzle in search of more prey-scents, though they couldn’t help the scowl that crossed their face at the mention of dogs. Those beasts had left their ugly clawmarks on nearly every aspect of Flypaw’s life that mattered: hunting on land, fighting beside WindClan, Heronpaw—

Scarletpaw stumbled backward, blood rolling down the side of her face, and a hulking, matted creature emerged from a nearby bush. Not a dog. Something almost like disappointment settled in Flypaw’s stomach. When they blinked, their eyes met Swanmist’s. She tipped her head toward the raccoon, an unmistakable go ahead, and Flypaw tossed the bitterness aside with a snarl. Dog or not, they’d rip this thing to shreds. They had to. Swanmist charged in first, tackling the raccoon away from Scarletpaw. Flypaw was half a step behind. They’d never fought a predator before, but a battle was a battle; there wasn’t room to hesitate, especially in front of Clanmates. They flattened into a crouch and took a low swipe. The raccoon had already found its balance, though, and the small apprentice had no choice but to pull back with empty paws, spitting wordlessly.

Flypaw used Belly Rake on Raccoon, using 15 stamina. Failure! Dealt 0 damage.

'Effect Dice' : 3

Scarletpaw was happy when the two other cats joined her so she wouldn't need to battle alone.  However, another sharp pain hit her soon after.  The claws of the raccoon dug down her back.  The pain was horrible, but it did give her an idea of how to kill the raccoon.  She went limp.  The raccoon stopped attacking, thinking she was dead.  The raccoon turned to Swanmist.  But quickly Scarletpaw lifted her head and with swift movements got her jaws around the neck of the raccoon.  Slowly, it sunk to the ground.  Blood poured from the wounds.  Within a few seconds it was dead.

Again, Scarletpaw felt a little guilt about killing the creature, but it was less than before because this one was actually harming her.  She sort of liked knowing that she helped to kill the raccoon with more of her brain than her brawn though.  A sigh of relief escaped her, for now she wouldn't have to worry about anyone else getting hurt.
